OH.MY.GOD! Were people actually entertained by this sort of stuff back then? Did anyone ever work again after this? Yes, it's camp but it's a lot of fun. Thanks for posting this.

I've always wondered why the Emerald City didn't have a car wash. This explains a lot.

We have come a long way. But yes people used to love that stuff back in the late 70's very early 80's.
Well I didn't want to get into it, but he's a Satanist.
Every full moon he sacrifices 4 puppies to the Dark Lord and smears their blood on his paino.
This should help you understand the score for Wicked a little bit more.

You have to remember that in those ancient, pre-DVD/VHS days OZ was restricted to one or two tv showings a year.
What's probably more disturbing is that basic carwash technology hasn't changed much since then.

I'm not sure what the hell I just watched, but I think I liked it more than Wicked.

Loved how the Crystal Ball was a clear dome umbrella! I am sure they were trying really hard to steer clear of images that MGM holds rights to in the movie. WICKED had to do the same thing. Ergo no hourglass, no ruby slippers, no crystal ball.

But Marcia wears ruby slippers. At least Alice mentions them.
Anyhoo! I thought this was amusing:

In Puerto Rico, "toto" is slang for "pvssy" and not the feline variety. XD

I'm not sure folks enjoyed that type of entertainment...but there wasn't much else to choose from. In the 70's you pretty much had THREE tv stations to choose from and if you had good reception one PBS station.
Pickin's were slim.
(And I don't think the Brady Hour lasted very long...only one season? Not really sure, I'd outgrown the Bradys by then.)

I liked that better than the movie version of The Wiz.

Video may have killed the radio star, but the Bradys killed the variety show!
Haven't seen this in a while. Haven't had a tooth drilled in a while, either.

I recently watched all eight episodes as I don't ever remember having seen them when they originally aired. That particular show was a true oddity and was locked away, unreferenced and forgotten for twenty years. Nothing about the show made sense in any way, especially the fact that it had a split-personality and a show-within-a-show platform. Using The Wizard of Oz as a background to feature the then-current disco hit "Car Wash" is an excellent example of the WTF random nonsense you will find in every scene of every episode. Even the characterizations pretty much ignored the original series. This show was even more bizarre than Pink Lady and Jeff, which flopped even worse. Those crazy Kroffts!

Love those crazy Kroffts!
I haven't seen all the episodes in years! Only the two that are on the DVD release. Rhino was going to release all of them in a box set (according to a friend who worked there about four years ago), but I don't know what happened to that. Maybe the single disc didn't sell like "hot cakes."
LOL

I remember when this first aired...it was definitely considered bad, but actually not that odd. It's hard to believe but alot of variety shows did crap like this.
The Krofft brothers were clearly deranged, however.
I LOVED every Brady incarnation...even this debacle.

Back in the early 90's they did a TV Family Drama series called THE BRADYS. It was set up to be like a prime time drama like Dallas or Falcon Crest or Dynasty. For years I thought I dreamed it.I guess it was worse than the Variety Show because they took it serious and approached it as an adult drama.
Jan came back but Marcia was having none of it!

The Bradys was HILARIOUS! I ate it up like ice cream!
It was so melodramatic! The funniest plot was Marcia's drinking problem. Unfortunately Maureen McCormick was pregnant and didnt sign on.
Another great Brady treat is the telemovie, "A Very Brady Christmas" which was so popular it gave birth to "The Bradys" a year later. Susan Olsen was absent from that incarnation.

Bobby was a race car drive and Cindy, who had beaten her lisp, was the color commentator. Bobby crashed in a race she was calling and became paralyzed. He, then, proposed to his girlfriend and got married but someone went into labor during the wedding. It wasn't one of the girls. Greg's wife maybe? Peter was divorced so it wasn't his wife. Or maybe it was the sister of the bride. I don't know. Also, Jan and her husband adopted an oriental girl who would only whisper to people.

I do remember seeing The Brady Brides (the first four episodes were later re-aired as The Brady Girls Get Married) and even the animated series, The Brady Kids. But I never saw The Bradys. I would LOVE to get my hands on those episodes! I love this one-sentence description of episode five of The Bradys entitled, "Bottom's Up" from TV.com:
With stress in her life, Marcia turns to alcohol.
Must-see TV, right there.

I have a vague recollection of one of their movies where someone was trapped somewhere. A building collapse? Anyway, Carol sang outside while the search went on. Shockingly, it had a happy ending.

I loved "The Bradys" and all its drama. I was actually sad when they cancelled it.
I also remember, back in the day, we called it, "Bradysomething."

The Brady 500, the 2-hr introduction to The Bradys is on the Complete Series DVD box set, as is A Very Brady Christmas.
Maureen McCormick had her daughter in 1989 and showed up hugely pregnant as Marcia in a dream sequence on the short-lived "Day By Day," which, oddly enough, starred Christopher Daniel Barnes, who would play Greg in the theatrical movies. Her absence from "The Bradys," which aired a year or two later, probably results more from common sense.
Susan Olsen missed 'A Very Brady Christmas" because she was getting married.
I know WAY too much about this stuff...I'll go back to my cubbyhole now.

I loved all of that Brady related crap! Remember when Mike came crawling out of the wreckage at the plant when he heard Carol's singing voice on the Christmas special? Was that the one when Bobby married Martha Quinn?
I don't recall Marcia's drinking problem, but I remember her loser husband Wally, Jan's douchey husband Phillip and that Greg became an obstetrician. And that Peter grew up to be HOT. The nineties were very kind to Christopher Knight.
I'll crawl into that hole with you, Jim...

Mike ran for public office is right! That's why Marcia drank...she was the only unimportant Brady since she was just a housewife!
Also, Bobby crashed and was in a wheelchair...his struggle is what drove Mike to run!
