^ that's a little much...
I'll be seeing TDK at midnight, mostly just because I really enjoy seeing movies at midnight :) I'm a huge Christian Bale fan so I'm looking forward to seeing his performance, as well as seeing all of the Chicago locations on the big screen! Today's Red Eye had a breakdown of which scenes were filmed where so those should be fun to spot. Whoo Chicago!

I just got back from a midnight showing. It was phenomenal. Definitely the best film of the summer and quite possibly the year thus far. It's the best superhero movie I've ever seen and it's really a towering achievement that works on so many different levels. The direction is slick and smart, the writing is snappy and well-developed, the special effects are minimal for a superhero movie but incredible, and best of all are the performances. All returning from BATMAN BEGINS are wonderful and Christian Bale is actually even better than he was in BB. He really carries this movie stunningly well. Aaron Eckhart also does a really solid and impressive job. And of course, Heath Ledger, as the Joker....well, he's a revelation. Flicking his tongue like some phsyco rattlesnake and making frightening quips that only he finds hilarious, this is a tour de force if I've ever seen one. What works about Ledger's performance is the fact that he is completely and totally enveloped and devoted to this world, living it in every frame, breathing its air in every single scene. When you go see THE DARK KNIGHT, as everyone who cares about the possibilities of the craft of moviemaking should, watch Ledger's eyes. Watch how completely immersed he is in this role and how he manages to be scene-stealing but not in a Jack Nicholson in the original BATMAN way...he's not hammy or scenery chewing but slowly plotting his ingenious plans piece by piece, playing the role straight. To be quite honest, he creates the most memorable film villian since Hannibal Lector. I guarantee he will get an Oscar nomination for his work, and rightfully so. If he wins, it would be great too. He was an immense talent gone too soon and deserves to have the title of 'Oscar winner' before his name.
I really have to shill this movie for a lot of Oscar recognition. It's time that the Academy started to look at movies like this and even IRON MAN as potential Oscar bait. Why not? Because it's entertaining and exceptionally well-crafted fun? Blockbusters like this deserve Oscar recognition and THE DARK KNIGHT should be nominated for Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor (Ledger), Best Screenplay, Best Special Effects, Best Art Direction, and Best Cinematography. And if the Oscars were given out right now, if it were up to me, it would win Picture, Supp. Actor, Cinematography, and Art Direction.
THE DARK KNIGHT is a feat of artistic genius. It is the perfect meshing of popcorn summer movie audience pleasing enjoyment and smart, slick, well-crafted Oscar-worthy material. And also, at 2 hours and 40 minutes, it does NOT feel that long at all.
**** out of ****

I'm with WickedRocks on this. It's a freaking terrific film. Eckhart was a standout--and Maggie G is such a 180 from Ms. Cruise. The action was fan***ingtastic and the film was so much more than typical summer popcorn fluff.
And, Ledger IS that good. He WILL get a nomination and could very likely win. Referencing that only one other actor has won posthumously does dampen his winning being a lock, but the Academy has been breaking statistics out the wazoo these past few years. I think it's gonna happen. And it will be deserved. It's a tremendously good performance--iconic--and that does make his death all the sadder. He could have had an astonishing career.
Now flame away.

i went to the midnight showing of TDK. it is an amazing achievement in the action/adventure-superhero genre. absolutely one of the best films i have seen this year. bale is still solid and ledger outdid himself as the joker. i was going to see mamma mia tonight but i'm going back to see TDK...it's just THAT great.
i'll wait for mamma mia on DVD.

Posted: 7/18/08 at 10:17amEasily one of the best films I have seen a while. There is never a dull moment in the movie; even when there's no action sequence happening, you're drawn in. Everyone does a great job. Ledger gives the best portrayal of the crown prince of crime that has ever been put on film. Everytime he's on the screen my heart was beating hard but I wanted more. He is so terrifying and intriguing at the same time. Being someone who has loved The Joker since I was a child, I was deliriously happy to see him captured with such precision.

I absolutely loved it. Ledger was spectacular. The movie didn't seem slow at all.
Weez- I think Bale is briefly shirtless once or twice....

I love you! Thank you! Not just for giving me the answer I'd like to hear, but for giving me an answer at all. The world has been strangely quiet on this subject. Thank you for giving me your attention and time. :)
I have my ticket booked for the first possible showing in this area, 1pm on Thursday. I'm not happy about having to wait, but at least I'll have time to launder my Batman t-shirt before going to see it. :3
