My friends and I attempted to see it this earlier evening, only to find out that all showings were sold out. The next available showing at my local Lowes cinema is not until 12:30 this morning.

So we're going to try again tommorrow. I think we're going to buy our tickets online during the day.

Saw it today. Liked it more than I was expecting to. The storytelling is very clumsy, it just lurches along, hitting the occasional high note. The intensity does build toward the end, but it just ultimately peters out, I thought. All the faux moralizing got on my nerves, there were just way too many speeches from Self Righteous Alfred about WHAT BATMAN MEANS.

Heath Ledger is bloody marvelous, a dazzling and surprising performance. There's just nothing like it. Gary Oldman and Aaron Eckhart are both excellent, providing much needed humanity in an increasingly cold and mechanical franchise. I'm completely over Christian Bale's useless Batman/Bruce: any automaton in a fancy suit could have walked through it. And Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine earn the easiest paychecks of their careers, they're both candidates for the Judi Dench Phone It In Award for 2008.

I saw it in an IMAX today and there weren't ANY previews. Is this happening anywhere else? And I was all about seeing the 'Watchmen' trailer THE JOKER RULES!!!! The Dark Knight can't compete.

Enjoyed the heck out of the movie, especially how the plot kept coming and that it wasn't solved just by having Batman punch The Joker in the face. And this is the first time I really thought Aaron Eckhart carried a ball that was given to him.

My only gripe is that Bale's 'Batman voice' is hard to understand.

I just saw it earlier today, and I thought it was wonderful! Though it was pretty long, I loved everything about it. I thought Heath Ledger, Aaron Eckhart, and Gary Oldman were great in it. I also thought the rest of the cast was good too! I never really cared to much for Christian Bale before, but I really liked him in this movie. And I also found his 'Batman voice' hard to understand at sometimes.

Absolutely INCREDIBLE film! I loved how this was a legitimate Scorsese-like crime drama that just happened to have Batman and the Joker as characters. The Joker was used perfectly. I loved how he mainly just popped up randomly throughout and you had no idea when he was coming or what he was going to do. The length was...well...lengthy but with the amount of characters and plotlines it had, I didn't mind. One of the best ensemble crime dramas in history.

(SPOILER WARNING)

I don't mean to get all overanalytical on you guys but what did you guys think of the 9/11 metaphors? The scene with Batman near the Ground Zero-like wreckage was a powerful image and I sort of read the ferry scene as a metaphor for the strength of humanity standing up against terrorism. In essence, it is about two men with different philosophies: One thinks humanity is bad and the other thinks humanity is good. Both of them are wrong and right at the same time.

Go, Abba! Free is always awesome!

Looking forward to seeing this myself soon... but hopefully once it's not so crowded. Older I get the more I need my "space".

Got a good report today (at lunch out after church) from our 22 year old son who just saw it this weekend, and all of your comments added are making me look forward to seeing it for myself even more.

f*cking awesome movie.

I've been talking about it with everyone lately, 80% of the people I've bumped into this weekend have already seen it. And I've yet to meet a person that didn't like it.

So good.

I think they're pleasing a LOT more people than they aren't. The 'fan boy' types I've talked to can hardly contain their glee.

I still don't know what to say. I LOVED Heath Ledger. I thought the movie was excellent and that he elevated the performances of those around him just by being in a scene with them. As an actor you want to find those people who can make you look good just by standing next to them. I feel like any adjectives that I use to describe it don't really do it justice. There was a moment where the Joker described the cat and mouse game that he and Batman play and how they would do it forever and I felt like I could watch it forever.

45 minutes too long. There's a great picture in there that's an hour and 50.

The whole 3rd act is a disaster - especially how they leave the Joker hanging. If you have a gun, it better go off. If you have a villian who needs comeuppance, you better see that commupance. But we don't.

Beyond that, it was an enjoyable afternoon...but I did find Ledger to be wildly overrated. If he were alive, he wouldn't get nearly as much buzz. The Oscar committee would give him an award just to say they gave someone else a posthumous award.

But Ledger's performance is nowhere near as brilliant as Peter Finch in NETWORK.

Saw it last night and loved it! Heath Ledger was great. My theatre must have been full of his fans, because the first time that the Joker's face is revealed, everybody burst into applause.

My only complaint is how we didn't see the Joker die.

I thought it was a good movie but it was just to long. Ledger was the best part of the movie.

"My only complaint is how we didn't see the Joker die."

The Joker didn't die. He got arrested.

Anyway, I saw it tonight and thought it was a bit too long, but Heath Ledger was BRILLIANT. He really was. A unique and intense performance that easily stole the show.

Christian Bale did a great job and was absolutely gorgeous in this movie, though his Batman "voice" was a little annoying, creepy, and way over the top.

Overall, it was a great movie that I will probably see again very soon.

I loved the previous film and thought I'd love this one....for some reason it didn't click with me. There were good parts, but I don't think I'd ever want to watch it again unless it was on tv. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one thinking this.

#99Oscar Buzz
Posted: 7/21/08 at 12:08pm

As of today, TDK has entered the Oscar Race according to awardsdaily.com, which I consider one of, if not the best, follower of Oscar buzz. It doesn't mean they necessarily think it will be nominated for all of these awards--it's just that the film is getting buzz in these categories. As it is, there are only two films in 2008 that have gotten serious Oscar buzz (Changeling is the other; apparently Wall*E is not).

Best Picture
Best Director
Best Supporting Actor - Heath Ledger
Best Art Direction
Best Sound Mixing

Interestingly, not included in Best Sound Editing, Best Visual Effects, Best Score, or Best Makeup.

I, personally, would think it will not get a BP or Directing nom unless we either have a slow year or is they start to nominate film like they did in the late 70s and 80s and 1990--putting in at least one Action/Fantasy/Adventure film that was well received and high grossing every few years (Jaws, Star Wars, Raiders, ET, Ghost).

But, tech nods--you better believe it as well as Ledger.

And on the "if they want better ratings" level, they will def nominate Ledger and possibly the film for BP.
