Yep nobody eliminated.

And seeing that Ian Brennan replaced Robert and Zack at the judges table, and he is also in the judges table next week for the finale, it seemed this episode was used for him to observe what he can do as a writer for these contenders as potential characters. Brennan, however, mainly specializes in Sue and Brittany, but I believe the other main writer, Brad Falchuk, was tied up in his other show he is doing for FX. I think Ryan wanted a close confidant to see for himself what the potential is with these four instead of him making a snap judgment in the final episode.

I actually thought Ian was an effective judge. I felt like they needed somebody new at the judges table every episode instead of Ryan, Zack, and Robert. I definitely believe if that was the case with this whole season that the final four could have looked a bit different.

Like Strummer said there was no elimination but all four did have to sing for Ian and Ryan.

Damian - I Gotta Be Me
Lindsay - Defying Gravity
Samuel - My Funny Valentine (which he didn't know)
Alex - His Eye Is on the Sparrow (Alex reminded us several times this was sung at his father's funeral)

I liked Ian as another judge and I liked that you could practically see the lightbulbs going off in his head. I laughed out loud at his comments regarding Damian and Brittany. I could picture exactly that. Damian talking and Brittany having no idea what he's saying. Or she could be after his pot of gold. She believes in Santa - why not leprechauns.

I wasn't in love with the fact that there was no elimination on Sunday. I didn't care for Samuel's "last chance" performance. I was worried when he was rehearsing it and he was trying to turn it into some screaming rock song. I guess someone spoke to him because none of that was present in his performance for Ian and Ryan. But nothing else was present either. He sang the song the right way vocally but I didn't feel any of it registered on his face. He was Samuel the robot for that song. He's meant to be singing to the person he loves. I would have prefered to see that on his face.

In regards to the link I shared - my sister spotted Damian but I missed him. I didn't see any of the other contestants but they could have been there.

There were have been a lot of dog whistles regarding who won, especially when the finalists were able to do press tours for for those Hollywood insider shows and the TCA forums.

Samuel said he never heard the song before and really, the time it was played on the show Tina broke down half-way through. But yeah, it felt like he was pulling an American Idol-like reconfiguration of the song that fit him most.

Plus when he realized Ian was the judge he seemed to jump at the opportunity to mention his Christianity and faith. I think he's genuine but it felt like he was worried and too self-conscious about not coming off like a Christian because he is fearful that Ryan only saw Cameron as the religious one in the group.

I think Samuel has proved he is not the best at conveying emotion without the direction of other people. Like during 'The Only Exception' video where he gave off a stare that looked more like death stare when he was supposed to like he was longing for somebody.

Thoughts (in stream of consciousness and real time with a lot of SPOILERS):

-Murphy is so bipolar with the tone he presents on Glee that it did not surprise me that he went from looking like a real hater to getting the other ex-contenders to join in as he looked on like a lit up Christmas tree. So cheesy, so Glee.

-You cannot convince that Adam Anders and Zack Woodlee are not the same person. I want to see them side by side, I want to see Zack wear thick rimmed glasses and a fedora, I want Adam without his thick rimmed glasses and fedora and wear sweats and a woolen hat. I will not rest until this happens!

-I noticed that Alex got specifically more diva-ish with Samuel when in front of the other ex-contenders. Interesting he chose to return to back to attitude in earlier episodes where most of them remember that behavior as commonplace. It just raises questions of whether he is doing it to get attention when the room is fuller.

-Boo, no HW assignment! But I like that they finally got to pick their own song. Samuel's thought process was... interesting. I love the song and I love that he totally, in an understated way, challenged the heteronormativity a la The White Stripes cover when Ryan cornered him about alleged problems with kissing a guy. Or it just did not occur to him.

-Really, Alex. Dreamgirls and drag, again. Versatility?

-That fan favorite thing, I am pretty sure I read that every participant in that vote cheated and it was a wash on who would win (except it easily could have been Damian based on his Q ratings being higher than the rest). But whatever, congrats Cameron. To you and your blessed chastity. I thought he was about to break out into prayer.

-I loved Lindsay's song and I loved how excited Zack (total Lindsay back) was but immediately went to Ian to know what he thought.

-Damian's performance was so goofball but at least it had self-awareness. Not unlike other contestants... oh, I will get to him.

-Samuel's performance was stellar vocally but it was like he closed his eyes for half of the performance.

-By Alex's standard he failed. His audience carried on like he was a character, sorry, but it is true. I know they consider him brave but I feel like they are walking a very slippery slope with having a kid barely 18 test out being a drag performer on the mainstream TV. So many mixed signals they got and what Alex wanted, I thought.

-Darren Criss totally got what I feel about Lindsay as a foil than the goody to shoes underdog. I feel somewhat vindicated.

-Wait... WHAT? There were two winners?!?!!?!?!?!?!? Damion and Sam?!?!?!? The debunked spoilers are suddenly Chekhov's gun? I feel.... strange hearing this happen.

- Wait, stop! The other two also get to appear? How long has this chain on me and how long has it been pulled?

-Yay! Lindsay got a two-episode arc. So did Alex but I can live with that.

I thought it was really sweet that Damien dedicated his song.

I didn't have a problem with both Samuel and Damien winning, but it was a little much to announce that the other two were also getting on the show -- I don't have a problem with them using them...but they shouldn't have rained on the Parade of the winners.

It wouldn't even suprise me if they bring in some of the others during the season.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

Yeah, and there was recently a photo floating around of Lindsay on the set of Glee. I thought them asking for her to come on would have been more low-key, and when the mentors (besides Nikki who seemed to be Lindsay's consistent bad cop who probably stood in her way of being Winner #2) raved about her I thought that was going to leave an natural opening. Not an announced 2 episode appearance in conjunction, I wish that announcement came immediately after Ryan said they would not get the 7 episode arc.

Sam does little for me. He's too much into his own head and brooding. I found his performances the past few weeks hard to connect to and was surprised that he was named "first." Character wise I can see some things to do with him though - so obviously that was more important.

He'll be the new rebel/loner.

Damion will be fun to watch - between his accent and charm, he'll have the girls swooning and guys jealous.

Lindsay will be a good foil for Rachel

Alex will be interesting. He's part Kurt part Mercedes. I can see both fuming and competing against Alex. But since that's a two story arc - he could be introduced as part of Vocal Adrenaline's new breakout star. Afterall - VA did lack "FUNK"

It will also be interesting how 7/2 these characters are. If Ryan/etc sees a good story in there, its possible Damion/Sam might go longer than 7. And Lindsay/Alex could go longer than 2.

I got home from Houston just in time to catch the finale last night.

Very excited about Damian but sad that I'll miss him on the CT fall tour. It's been so nice watching him grow from a gangly 14 year old to the young man who won everyone's heart on the Glee Project.

It didn't occur to me that there would be two winners, but I'm actually delighted with the end result!

Of all the final twelve, Damien and Sam (along with Cameron) are probably the only ones I would have any interest in seeing on my screen again. The others I really don't care for much one way or the other - I didn't quite realize my apathy towards them until they announced that Alex and Lindsay would get two episodes too. Totally unnecessary, I think. And I wonder how far Cameron would have gone if he hadn't quit - I'm quite sure he would have at least made it to the final four, perhaps saving me from having to watch Alex on Glee.

Lastly, I really hope Sam wears his sexy pink shorts to McKinley.

Not necessarily. Remember, Ryan had cut Damian the night Cameron quit. So, if Cameron stayed the final four MAY have been Alex/Lindsay/Sam/Cameron

I am ever the more glad Cameron quit. He is talented but I feel like Sam Evans (EDIT: But I guess Chord Overstreet has solo musician ambitions) easily could have filled the Christian singer template (even canon characters like Mercedes could be have an expanded backstory on their faith that could go to wherever Murphy is thinking about with a Christian character) that I feel like they are going with Samuel Larsen but most of all, and I am beating a dead horse at this point, I really think Cameron was not prepared for what he was getting into. Cameron placing these limitations on himself, especially on a show like Glee (sorry, Murphy, you cannot suddenly have the rest of the characters on the show wear special gloves around the Christian character), would not really work on the show. The only people in Hollywood who I know of who do not getting physically intimate with other people on screen are Neal McDonagh and Jim Caviezel.

It would have been challenging for the writers on Glee, and I know they would have been vocal on how a challenge would be great for them, but I feel like making that a 7 episode arc on a chaste Christian character would run out of juice by the third episode (Samuel's 'bad' alt boy Christian at least is an interesting physical depiction that is not too often portrayed on the small screen), like mostly any other arc on the show. Maybe the arcs with Damian and Samuel will run out of steam early on but I doubt either of them would have that happen based on them deliberately limiting what they can portray on screen. Likely it would just be the lazy writing on the show (or a mixture of one/both of them not really translating well to scripted TV). Plus I really think Cameron's presence is very awkward. Probably better in-person than on scripted TV.

Oh, I forgot about that bit, Eris! I guess Damien (and us) has Cameron to thank then. I still think he would've gone far, perhaps even win - mostly because Brad loved him so much.

Is Chord definitely still on the show? His tweets have been kinda saying the opposite, stuff like "I'm gonna miss you guys so much, I'm so sad". I hope he does return - you are so right, strummergirl - if a character loses steam, the writers should be blamed!

Oh, crap, you are right about Chord! The producers did want him back in a guest starring role with future options but he declined (his other music ambitions). He still hangs out with the rest of the cast so I thought everything was back to normal on that front, but I guess that had a lot to do with the promoting of Glee 3D. I thought even if he was going to be written off that he would at least have a more appropriate sendoff (like one of his parents did find a full-time outside of Ohio and he's moving again) but I guess this is Season 1 Matt Rutherford all over again.

That's a nice blog, Eris - so nice to see he cares so much for his fans. Hopefully they'll be happy for his success!

Also, I didn't realize Phil Coulter was involved with Celtic Thunder (actually I hadn't heard of CT at all before this).

Scorn Not His Simplicity is one of my favorite songs. Glee sure will be a big change!

Now that I think about it, Scorn would've made a great song with regard to Becky or Sue's sister or even Brittany in Glee.

Phil has been their musical director from the beginning and many of their songs are Phil originals. As Damian said he has sadly announced that he has moved on.

Actually, former CT member Paul Byrom will be singing a new Phil Coulter song at his NYC concert at BB King's. November 18 I believe.

Wow....he's already got crazy fangirls. The poor boy doesn't stand a chance at "normal".

He's had them since he was 14 but now it'll be on a much wider scale. But, based on seeing many interviews with him and my two meetings with him I do believe he will be able to handle it.

Last year he was looking for suggestions for songs to perform on this year's Phil Coulter cruise and I had given him a copy of Georgia Stitt's "One Day More" - sung by Matthew Morrison. Interesting how things come full circle.
