Roxy, let's see where the Republicans stand on ACA/Obamacare 5 years from now.Once the American people have it and like it how long before those who tried to kill it start taking credit for it? (like Mitt Romney did with the auto bailout)

The thing I find especially unconscionable was that after making numerous demands to make the law acceptable to Republicans, not a single one of them voted for the bill they demanded so many changes to.

I also want to be clear that while I'm ranting in this thread because my initial, repeated visits to the website to enroll have been terrible, I am by no means giving up on the system or on ACA. Just pointing out that there are serious missteps going on. That doesn't mean "retreat" or "give up" or "do nothing." The Republican dinosaurs need to understand the difference between "fix it" and "prevent it." They don't, so far.
I will add one other bit of info about my circumstances. If I want to see if I qualify for any sort of discounted premium rates or "tax break" or however they want to call it ... I must apply through healthcare.gov for the state of Kansas. If I apply through Blue Cross Blue Shield of Kansas (or any other insurer) directly, I can't get the tax discount.
I'm not even sure I qualify, but I have a suspicion I do, at least for now. Part of my issue filling out the questions is that my income doesn't come from one source for 2013. I can't be alone in that scenario, but for me, I started out the year with a good-paying job. I was laid off when the company went under. I was on unemployment after that, and I have outside sources of income as well (1099 stuff). Estimating my income for the year is complicated, and even listing my sources is apparently too complicated for this website. It offers you multiple input lines, but then calculates your income for the entire year, rather than for a finite time. In other words, when I put down my unemployment, it calculated it from January 1, rather than just for the months I received it. I tried to go in and fix it, but that didn't work.
I'm still not giving up! Just pulling out my hair a bit.
EDIT2: Another example of the website flunkery ... it allows you to enter a date when the unemployment insurance will end, but not a date for when it started. Nice.

I know I'm repeating my position, and it's certainly not for most of the people who read the OT Board.
I get frustrated when people like Roxy try to spin this into a "told ya so," or "we should have delayed this horrible thing because look how broken it is" scenario. That's Republican sour grapes talking. Quit treating American healthcare like a football game between "us" and "them!" It's disgusting and damaging to the tune of $28 billion. It gets the American people nowhere except much deeper in debt in only a few days.
I wish the dinosaurs were extinct. And I wish they could read.

The biggest irony here is that with the bonehead government shut down, the GOP actually muted much of the valid criticism of the rollout.
I think it is a state-specific experience, like some have mentioned, and that the federal site suddenly became much more important and received much more traffic when state after state decided not to implement the exchanges. I have heard folks in California have had a pretty good experience, but others, like Betsy, have had a horrible one.
The traffic is much higher than anyone anticipated (coverage is not available until 1/1/14) and with less cooperation from the states, and clearly not enough time in beta testing, the site is a mess. Hopefully it will be debugged and folks will have a better experience.

i'm not in any way, shape or form debunking ACA but I hope someone is taking notes and seriously considering implementing much needed changes to make this process user friendly or many with the best intentions of signing up will throw in the towel out of the sheer frustration which in the end is counter-productive.

Well no, the Republicans haven't helped at all- The shutdown falling on the first day of the website being up completely sabotaged it. 80% of the staff was furloughed for two weeks on the launch date of a huge very complicated pro jct.

I just have to take exception to some of the things said here that seem to pass as facts.
The Republicans had little or no say about what went into this law. They were there in meetings but NONE of their substantive ideas such as tort reform and selling insurance across state lines were used. This law was drafted and written entirely by Democrats. It was passed entirely by Democrats. The Republicans were obstructionists from the very beginning but the Republican congressional majority passed hundreds of amendments to try and alter this bill. NONE were accepted and most were never brought to a vote in the senate. You can say their amendments were only meant to make the ACA weaker or worse but we will never know because not one was incorporated into the law. For better or worse, the ACA is entirely a Democratic piece of legislation.
It is certainly true that we would have seen no change in the current system had the Republicans been in charge. Now we will see if the ACA is better than no change at all.
The fact that the rollout is a disaster has nothing to do with the shutdown but has everything to do with the fact that the software is inadequate and I suspect that the people helping have little guidance or experience. Software like this should have been developed by a company with healthcare experience or at least one with huge resources and know how. But the software can be fixed.
If the ACA is a success, all the credit goes to the Democrats. If it is a fiasco, it is ridiculous to blame the Republicans.

Dented, revisionist history seems to rule when it comes to the ACA. Even the Heritage Foundation, the conservative think tanks that first floated the "Mandate" is now trying to claim that while they did indeed propose that every American be required to have health insurance they NEVER meant for every American to HAVE health insurance.
Slate takes a look at the amendment process of the ACA bill. If you don't trust Slate as a source they have helpfully linked to a PDF with a straight list of the proposed amendments. Indeed, many (most ? nearly all?) Republican changes were obvious attempts to derail the process but quite a few made it in.

I can read. If ACA was a roaring success, the DEMS would be puffing their chests out. I am sorry it is not working but it was an accident waiting to happen. There is something wrong with the law when many who voted for it never read it and had to be bribed to vote for it. People are finding out what a trainwreck it is and despite Obama statements their premiums will rise and care will be worse. Medicare has to be slashed to pay for it and even if it worked like a charm 30 million people would still be without coverage. Unless healthy young people buy into in droves it will fail.
Maybe if the democrats practiced true bipartisanship and included the GOP in their discussions there might actually be a good bill and some genuine feelings of friendship between the GOP & DEM.

161 Republican amendments made it into the final Senate Bill and public option was dropped as a concession. So if Republicans refused to cooperate it's not for the lack of trying by the Democrats.

Mr Roxy I'd like to ask you (and I hope you'll answer): What more could Democrats have done to include Republicans in this bill? What would have been good bi-partisan ideas? I'll get you started: Democrats felt strongly that all citizens should have health care. Republicans proposed doing nothing. In other news, they want to allow insurance companies to be bigger and make even more money and they want to stop injured consumers from any sort of recourse when injured.

siny, I read your article. Thank you. It's a stretch to say the public option was dropped because of Republicans alone. It was dropped because there was no support across the board for such a plan. The 161 compromises referred to in the article could be such minor things in a two thousand page bill as to be moot. But regardless, this is a fact:
The final Senate vote for the ACA was 60 Democrats in favor 39 Republicans against and one No Vote. Clearly it is a bill that one side wanted and thought was good for the country and the other side did not. It is in no way, shape, or form a Republican bill.
We will see what the American people think as time goes by.
