re: The Official Adam Pascal Love Thread, Part 13!

I don't know if that was directed at me, but I'm not even remotely angry! I completely enjoy this type of discussion, provided it doesn't take a personal turn.

For what it's worth, I'm disappointed on a personal level that they didn't appear on any shows (although someone told me that they appeared on Good Morning America a while ago - not to sing, though) just because I would have liked to have seen them. However, I don't feel that it's some sort of obligation on the producers' part, as long as they manage to fill the seats.

Didn't Tamyra have a TV spot on channels like NBC? I saw her on TV once in a commercial advertising Rent. They could've done that with Adam and Anthony.

I'm sure they could have, but again, what would be the objective? If it's to advertise Rent as a show in hopes of keeping people in the seats after Adam and Anthony leave, I guess I can understand that, but the discussion originally was sparked by someone saying that there hadn't been enough publicity for Adam and Anthony's return, which I don't think is necessarily the case.

re: The Official Adam Pascal Love Thread, Part 13!

I hope no one is angered here by this discussion. As far as I know, no one here is an actual marketing executive or broadway marketing executive (I could be wrong). Some of our ladies are going to school towards that goal, and a few others have had some career experience in it, but that is the extent as far as I know of. It is all just a gathering of ideas and opinions on the matter. No one is wrong, no one is right. We are hear to share what we know and learn from each other.

re: The Official Adam Pascal Love Thread, Part 13!

It's pretty obvious that the producers are past the point of caring about marketing Rent in general, though

Well that's the thing. It's a fine line between advertising for Rent and advertising for Adam and Anthony's run in Rent. It seems they should be pushing for Rent as an entity, like siamese said. Maybe they just assume that since it's got a long history, people know about it - and if they want to see the show, they will.

re: The Official Adam Pascal Love Thread, Part 13!

Emcee, actually no, I never knew these appearances cost the producers anything.

Did I post about this actress before? I wasn't sure.

Lexi, you may be right that it was just a matter of chance that this particular person didn't know, but it's the kind of striking instance that always makes a good (if questionable) anecdotal example. The cost/benefit analysis makes a lot of sense, and I'll be interested to see how sales are for this week. From what I've heard, they're already down somewhat due to fall classes starting. However, it seems like this could have been predicted, and reacting to it now is a little late.

I also doubt that anyone who might have liked the movie but is not the type to watch for news about the show would know about them being back. There are several friends of mine who fall in this category, (or would if I weren't around to tell them.) I would guess this is the biggest bloc of potential audience members. How to reach them is another question.

As I mentioned before, I do get this feeling that their return to the show exists in a kind of bubble. Inside it there's a lot of excitement, even frenzy. Outside it is almost complete unawareness, even on some Broadway sites. I've noticed that All That Chat has had zero reviews and only a handful of posts (two of which were mine) regarding Rent.

Tink, I've had the same thing happen with blog search. I changed my preferences to the "safest search" setting, and they disappeared.

re: The Official Adam Pascal Love Thread, Part 13!

GG - I believe the commercial on NBC was a promo spot for a contest they were having to win tickets. NBC was most likely running and paying for the whole thing. ( they did a few contests with different shows).

re: The Official Adam Pascal Love Thread, Part 13!

I find it weird that they would have been on a talk show and not one of us would have heard about it.

I think a commercial would have been a good idea, but again, it comes down to money. It originally was only a six week run, and organizing and putting everything together to make a new commercial featuring them may have not have been worth the time. The majority of people who bought tickets because they returned were most likely on these types of sites anyway. I just think it's unfortunate that fans who don't frequent the online sites missed out on the opportunity.

I feel dumb. I had no idea, although it makes since that those types of things were paid for. what about bryant park, did all those actors get paid? or that interview for broadway.com that Groff did he was paid for that? I feel so disillusioned! I am going to be so full of questions now!

Well, right. Advertising Rent as an entity is an entirely different ballgame and brings up a whole new set of questions. I just don't think anyone here was initially talking about that.

My best guess is that the producers don't see it necessary to heavily push Rent as a show anymore because it's recouped dozens of times by now. Why should they spend more money on a risky, hardcore marketing campaign that could ultimately fail when they can just sit tight and hope people still come due to word of mouth?

Of course, I'm speaking from what is probably their point of view, not necessarily mine. I can see both sides and leave it to those hopefully more knowledgeable than me on the matter to make the actual decisions. re: The Official Adam Pascal Love Thread, Part 13!

re: The Official Adam Pascal Love Thread, Part 13!

I feel like events within a lot of long-running shows seem to exist in that sort of bubble. The excitement fades away and the rest of the world sort of turns away, but within the devoted community, everything is still in really tight focus.

no lexi not you.

I agree that most likley the producers just don't think its necessay, but it would be nice!

re: The Official Adam Pascal Love Thread, Part 13!

Lexi - you make really valid points right there!

In my vision - this would be the time to try and drum up free to at least the least expensive word of mouth, so that ticket sales do not drop drastically when A&A leave. They are there and would bring in viewers and/or attendees, if you are going to do something, now would be the time. Plus it would benefit Adam because he could possibly somehow plug his upcoming cd and tour. But then again, it might not be worth it all together. I don't know the actor union rules to know how difficult it might be.

re: The Official Adam Pascal Love Thread, Part 13!

I don't think that's what anyone here was initially talking about either, Lexi, but it just occurred to me that the sales weren't great prior to their return, and might fall back down again after they leave. I think that tink is right. Given the show's history, I don't foresee a larger "event" happening to Rent than Adam and Anthony's return, and I agree that if they are ever going to pull out the big guns with advertising, now would be the time. I'm wondering if it all happened very fast and they're just doing it as sort of a fun, spontaneous thing that wasn't hashed out very far in advance.

Tink, you're obviously well versed in the advertising world, and I think you're right again about Adam pushing his tour/cd through this. But the closest I've ever come to the world of marketing is through my lackluster telemarketing temp job like 8 years ago, so I can't offer any solutions as to how he might do that, lol.

re: The Official Adam Pascal Love Thread, Part 13!

I agree that it seems weird that they'd be on a show without any of us hearing about it, but my co-worker seemed pretty certain about it. Apparently it was a short interview segment. I looked on Good Morning America's website when she told me in hopes of finding it, but no such luck.

Chloe, now that I think about it, maybe you mentioned the actress to me privately. I just know that I'd heard of her before. Also, I personally wouldn't take All That Chat's posts as any indication of... well, anything. Old theatre queens don't care about Adam and Anthony, and if they do, they keep it a secret.

Harley Jay has posted a rather sweet and modest blog about the delay in his Broadway debut. He's sounds like a very nice guy.

ETA: ah, I think you're right, Lexi. I also understand what you're saying about ATC, but it seems silly.

re: The Official Adam Pascal Love Thread, Part 13!

thanks, MC, but I wouldn't consider myself anywhere near "well versed". There is still A LOT to be learned, and unfortunately every situation is different. I dealt with marketing of a spokesperson in the "famous for doing nothing" entertainment industry, but most of those principles and ways don't work the same way as say in Broadway, or another field. There are some universal themes but you just have to learn your individual market and the ins and outs of it. And it is all up to, like Lexi pointed out, what the man upstairs' overall purpose and expectations of the outcome are. If they don't really care, it is all a moot point really.

re: The Official Adam Pascal Love Thread, Part 13!

And yes, of course it would be the perfect time for the producers to advertise Rent as a show, but also keep in mind that there's a reason why they're pushing the "Adam and Anthony return!" aspect of it rather than the show as a whole. And what makes anyone think that Adam and Anthony are going to agree to essentially be marketing tools for Rent? And why would the producers care about promoting Adam's tour and CD, provided that it wasn't in Adam's contract?

And why am I starting all of my sentences with and? Anyway, it's not a bad idea, but the issue is little more complex than we'd all like it to be.

Aw, that blog was really sweet. Both Harley and Declan seem like really nice guys. One of my roommates got tickets through work to see it at the end of October, and I know nothing will compare to seeing the boys onstage, but I kind of want to see them now.

re: The Official Adam Pascal Love Thread, Part 13!

I actually want to see them as well. I know there are some haters out there, but I have heard mostly positive reviews about their tour run, so it has peaked my interest.

re: The Official Adam Pascal Love Thread, Part 13!

My mom watches Good Morning America every day so I called her to find out the scoop. She said she doesn't remember seeing them, but that doesn't mean it didn't happen.

Everyone is bringing up great points regarding the marketing of the show. While I can see how it would make sense to get a bit more publicity going before Adam and Anthony leave, I have a feeling that it won't happen. Attendance wasn't great before they came, but they were still selling enough tickets to keep the show going. There was minimal advertisement then, so why spend the money on it now just because Adam and Anthony left?

A friend of mine saw Harley and Declan on tour and said they were pretty good. Judging from that blog, he does seem nervous, but with good reason. This has to be such an exciting time for him.

Random, but I just got this in my email from VFR. This might have been mentioned already, but I didn't see if it was:

EXCLUSIVE: Meet current RENT stars Anthony Rapp and Tamyra Gray at Madame Tussauds New York from 3-4PM on Thursday, Aug 30th! Anthony and Tamyra will be signing autographs in the American Idol® Cafe. There you can enjoy the Playbill Opening Night at Madame Tussauds exhibit, which features wax figures of 2 former RENT stars.
