re: The Official Adam Pascal Love Thread, Part 13!

It seems like a valid interpretation to me that, having finally gotten out of the loft and asked Mimi out, Roger would feel exuberant for a while. On the other hand, it could just be Adam feeling exuberant.

re: The Official Adam Pascal Love Thread, Part 13!

In the other times I've seen the show, I've always felt like Roger is holding back from having a good time- like he won't let go as much as the others. That just could be my interpretation, though.

re: The Official Adam Pascal Love Thread, Part 13!

I've always been torn on that too. Even if he is happy to be out of the loft, people usually don't do that much of a 360 in a few hours, but this is a musical.

I just think of it as an overall picture of happiness for the whole gang before the second Act. You see them all so happy, loving, and celebrating together, so when **** starts hitting the fan you make the emotional connection type of deal.

I don't really see it as a 360 -- Roger is clearly deeply troubled, and things don't change that quickly. I think this is a diversion and a change (once he finally gets out, he manages to enjoy himself), and he's experiencing something temporary.

Adam was extremely exuberant during La Vie Boheme and Happy New Year, maybe too exuberant, but you couldn't help but feel happy that Roger was actually enjoying himself. For a little while, anyway.

I love that scene because you have so much tension building between the characters, and you know that conflict is unavoidable at some point. But they all just allow it to remain unsaid for the most part during that big, collective celebration.

Roger is still Roger in that scene - my feeling is that he's just on a bit of a cloud 9. I like the way that Adam's Roger takes Mimi and pushes past the maitre d into the life cafe a bit angrily and fed up. Even though he's in a considerable better mood, Adam shows us that Roger still clearly has that edge to him and has a temper. Little things that he does throughout the show really make a difference - it's incredible how he just inhabits that character.

I didn't mind it at all while watching the show, but when looking at it from a different perspective after, it was a bit odd. But as happy and giddy he was in HNY, he flipped the switch back to brooding anger with ease. Poor Tamyra just gets tossed around during that scene. I don't remember there being that much pure anger in that scene the last few times I saw it. Adam/Tamyra/D'Monroe did a great job.

Well, and how much he's able to really step outside himself and enjoy the night is also a testament to the way Mimi got under his skin, and how deeply they connected -- despite the fact that he tries to resist it.

Exactly. And all the more reason for him to be so incredibly angry at her about the whole Benny incident. He let his guard down and then felt shamed...again.

And yeah - Tamyra gets tossed around a lot, lol. I never remembered Benny picking up Mimi in that scene

That's a very good observation about his reaction to Benny.

The male cast members seem to be taking advantage of the fact that Tamyra is a twig by tossing her around like that.

re: The Official Adam Pascal Love Thread, Part 13!

hehe. Tamyra is a tiny little thing. She's really growing on me though - I liked her much more the second time I saw her.

Now I want to see Anthony pick her up, lol.

re: The Official Adam Pascal Love Thread, Part 13!

Sorry to derail the discussion, but I just found out that I'll need to make a trip into the city tomorrow afternoon for a meeting. Since I'm going to be there, I might as well try the lotto, right? I have no willpower.

re: The Official Adam Pascal Love Thread, Part 13!

Good luck with the lotto, LuckyStar! :)

The Happy New Year certainly was more physical this time than in previous shows I'd seen, but it was very well done.

I believe this had been said before, but I love how, right before Another Day when Tamyra comes through the "door" Adam smiles for a bit, then his expression changes so you can see how upset and angry he is once he realizes what she's doing. You can really tell what's going through Roger's head there, and Adam's the best doing that of anyone I've seen doing Rent.

My new favorite moments are during Light my Candle. During the whole "I like it between my...." part, his faces are priceless.

Well, I've never seen the show live before, but whenever I watch the movie I will literally fast forward to all the scenes with Adam in them because I love watching his facial expressions. The faces that he makes just add so much more to the character and I start to feel sympathy for him(Roger, I mean).

I actually really love the AD/OT transition in the movie, too. And the way Roger comes so close to smiling just a little bit, but stops himself and just kind of gawks at her.

My favorite moment in the show, when I see it on stage, is and probably always will be the exchange between Mark and Roger during Christmas Bells.

re: The Official Adam Pascal Love Thread, Part 13!

Oh my gosh, I'm obsessed with Christmas Bells. I remember when I rediscovered Rent during college - I had always loved it and listened to the recording, but I hadn't listened to it fully in quite some time - I sat down with the lyrics to that song and listened to it like 10 times in a row. I love beautifully arranged, complex numbers like that, and it's so rewarding to see it all come together on stage. All the little vignettes just weave in and out of each other - it's probably one of the moments I looked most enjoy seeing live.

re: The Official Adam Pascal Love Thread, Part 13!

Scary as it was, Buzz was actually having a discussion comparing the movie and show. There were several aspects he liked better in the movie (his least favorite things were the cheesy orchestrations, Roger's hair, and WYO sequence - but that is pretty much everyones items). One was the end of RENT where Roger and Mimi see each other, because it at least foreshadows her coming to the door during LMC. He said in the live show, it was just too weird her just showing up out of no where. My jaw was on the floor that he even remembered these things, lol.

re: The Official Adam Pascal Love Thread, Part 13!

I've always loved Happy New Year, but it's becoming one of my favorite onstage moments. I love watching the mood change in the scene and the tension build. I keep noticing little things that they do to really make the character- The way Adam's face looks completely frozen and nervous when he directs Mimi out the first time during LMC and Anthony's little noises when Maureen calls Joanne pookie after Tango Maureen.
#1172

re: The Official Adam Pascal Love Thread, Part 13!

lol, I love the part when Anthony makes the "uh oh" noise after Tango Maureen.

Tink, I agree with him about Mimi and Roger seeing each other at the end of the Rent number. I also liked their decision in the film to have Angel wave to Mimi. In the play I don't think the fact that they had a strong friendship was that clear.

I'm wondering if, in the play, Mimi simply goes to Roger's door out of necessity rather than having planned it. I assumed that after their interaction, the interest between them builds. But I never thought that she was interested before she made that initial visit to his apartment, you know?

I know at least since the A&A return, Angel and Mimi hug during RENT while crossing the stage at one point.

re: The Official Adam Pascal Love Thread, Part 13!

I just realized while watching it this past Saturday that Benny is one of the dancers during Contact. I was like, how did I not notice this before?

I also paid close attention to Mimi during ICY:R like told to, and yes she really does act sick and it is very moving.
