the new record kinda concerns because is it just going to be studio recordings of songs that have been circulating for the past and year and half?

They'll be on there, I'm assuming, but it'll be more than just that. The shows he's been doing for the past year and a half have actually only had what, a total of four new songs? Save for Maria, Maybe This Time and What I Did for Love, the stuff is almost all off of Model Prisoner and Civilian. So there's got to be quite a bit more new material for the record that they're just not performing yet.

I watched Legally Blonde yesterday (for shame, I know). I wanted to kick Laura Bell Bundy. What a disaster. The show isn't THAT bad itself -- not my thing, but has the potential to be fun, at the very least -- but nothing could redeem how atrocious her performance was.

I guess my concern is coming from the fact that the only people who really care about Adam's solo music career are people who are fans of Rent and/or his other Broadway work.

If he had scheduled a show at my college, and I had no idea what Rent was or that he was in it, I would not even think about attending the show as it is being marketed right now. Playing Broadway covers appears to a very targeted and niche audience. This coming from a newbie Broadway fan, who didn't really get into Broadway until I moved to NYC for my work.

I am also still scratching my head as to why Fuse is interested in him. Fuse seems a little too 'hip' for him. (Ah, I know, that was a bit harsh, but true...)

I do like Adam, really I do : P

And sweet, aw 5 times is nothing. To make you feel better, a friend and I did a road trip this summer following the John Mayer (and Ben Folds) tour for 3 dates over a weekend. It was honestly the most fun I've had in quite some time : P

I'm kind of tired of him performing 'One Song Glory' at all of his gigs. I know that's the song that everyone is really coming to see him sing

I know you're not the only person who feels that way! It kind of puts him in a bad position, because on one hand, it can be a great way to expose people to his solo music. On the flip side, I think he realizes that a lot of his fan base will travel with him, so they don't want to hear the same song at every show.

while i agree with that to a point, OSG is one of the songs he is most known for. It is what put him on the map, so to speak. He probably doesn't want to sing it, but that is was people identify him with, particularly if they have never seen him live in RENT. i for one would be slightly pissed if he didn't sing it. it would be like going to a bon jovi show and not hearing Living On A Prayer or Wanted. Just my opinion.

yeah, but he performs it as the second to last song I believe. Everyone is pretty happy and ok with the show up to that point that I don't think they would mutiny if it isn't played.

Plus - Now a lot of people have gotten to experience him perform it live on the RENT stage, so the urgency may subside a bit. And if they didn't see it, there are plenty of bootlegs out there they probably saw it.

I think that as long as Adam played ANY song from RENT or Aida the masses would be satisfied. I don't think it has to be OSG.

Hah.

Rereading my last post, I swear I've discussed all of these topics ad nauseum. I should stop caring, just for my own mental sanity.

Oy, Glory. I was thinking about this yesterday. I love Glory. I have always loved it and I always will -- and originally, that had nothing to do with Adam. The first time I saw Rent, I went in blind. I knew nothing about the original cast or anything like that. And I just fell in love -- from a theatrical standpoint -- with Roger. He has always been the anchor of that story, for me, in a very different way than Mark is. It will perhaps forever remain very high on my list of favorite theatrical moments. And so, as time went on, and I became more in tune with the whole Rent "thing," obviously the idea of Adam singing Glory came to mean a great deal to me. I cried when I first heard him sing it live, at the Kean show back in 2004. I never expected to hear him sing it in person, and those opening notes took me completely by surprise. I will never forget it. The second, third, even fourth time, it was still this incredibly emotional experience for me. But... when he began doing it at every single show, it sort of started to lose that special spark. It went from this rare, totally surreal experience to... just another thing he did. On a very personal level, I feel like now that the return has come and gone, I'm very ready for him to retire it. What can possibly be better than the experience of hearing his voice fill that house from that stage with those written notes? I'm a point where I hope he doesn't include it. I'm probably going to be like, shunned for saying that, but... it's how I feel.

(I don't even want to count how many of his solo gigs I've been to in the past few years. Eek.)

Ok, I specifically asked Adam if the show here(Michigan)in January was going to be the same as the one on Friday. He said..."yes....well no....the new album is comming out soon after so we will be doing alot of new stuff"!

Backing up a bit again:

I'm not sure I fully 'get' what Adam is trying to do with his music career besides make some money.

The impression I get is actually that the solo music is the thing he's not in for the sake of the money. I mean, yes, at bottom, performers play to get paid, but I don't think he's keeping up that side of his career for the cash. It's pretty easy to tell that his music, songwriting, etc., is the professional endeavor he loves the most.

I really hope they do a show that was like the Civilian release concert. Adam and his band literally sang through the album at Joe's Pub. I don't think they did it in exact order, but they performed the whole thing.

he does strike me as the type to be trying to walk the tightrope between commercial appeal and artistic integrity type of deal. Not many people have success doing that, it is usually one extreme or the other.

MC - understandable, but lately it is a weekly type of convo. Not complaining exactly, just point out a fact.

lst - I noticed that too and think it is a brilliant move.

Well, the Fuse people were asking what they'd like to see more/less of at his concerts. I'd venture to guess that not all people gave insightful answers, but I hope that he did get some good ideas out of the question.

I know I'd love for a release-type concert. I've actually been hoping for but not expecting it.

I was talking to someone about this earlier: there's something very formulaic about writing pop songs that are intended to be successful mega-hits. And a lot of times, artists feel that going with that grain harms their artistic voice. It's a tough thing to wrestle with.
