I was so so looking forward to AitW on Monday night, but it looks like we're getting a big storm, and my car's getting fixed, so I don't know if I'll be able to go anymore.

Actually, I've decided to write my review tonight, so here it is, to the best of my ability:

The theater was small, but full, and there was a girl filming the show and taking photos on the side. I was in the third row, so I was pretty close.

The show started with a song "Don't Lie", where Adam made use of an electric guitar (though not extensively). The song wasn't as soft as previous ones. The next song, similar to the first was, I think, called "Turn the Lights On". This song sounded more rock-ish than I've heard of Adam singing in a while. It could almost fit in with Civilian's songs.

Adam then played "See Me Shining" and "Maybe This Time". "See Me Shining" was beautiful, with slight musical and vocal changes, but only really in the way he sang certain versus. "Maybe This Time" was also great, with Adam's vocals being right on. A harmonica (played by Adam) has been added to this song, which made it interestingly different. It sounded pretty good, though. After that came "Maria".

Other songs he played that have been played before were "Just As I Am", "A Single Drop of You", and "I'm With You" all of which were wonderful. Adam was good vocally, although he cracked a bit on "A Single Drop of You". I noticed "This Life" was left off the setlist. As for Larry, he played "Will I Drown" which is apparently about global warming, with Adam on electric guitar and background vocals. It was a pretty mellow song.

Sprinkled in between the older songs were more new songs. One, which Adam said he sang with a Latin woman on the album, was pretty slow but different lyrically. Adam played the base on this song, which gave it a jazzy feel. The song "Blinding Light" was good, with Adam this time on electric guitar. For some reason, the guitar solo reminded me of a U2 type of solo. And Adam used a raspier, more rock voice towards the end.

For an encore Adam sang "One Song Glory" and "What I Did for Love", both of which were good. Adam sang the heck out of them both, and may have over sang "What I Did for Love" a bit, because he sounded tired after, but it was great seeing him sing Glory in a different environment than Rent, and to see him sing "What I Did for Love" live.

In general it was a great show. Adam was great, as was Larry, and the audience interaction they had between songs was funny. The many new songs made the setlist very interesting, and I enjoyed seeing older songs performed live.


There wasn't a strict camera policy, actually, and I was able to record the new songs if anyone wants them.

I'm glad you had such a good time. I would like the songs as well, it'll give me something to listen to when it's almost 4 am and I'm unable to sleep :P

I watched a couple minutes of one of the videos Cheryl posted a link to on Adam's site. It really seems like Adam is holding back a bit vocally; his range seems fine, but I thought his voice didn't sound as strong as usual. Usually you can tell it really fills the theatre, even on a video.

ETA: Actually, his range seems to be affected a bit as well. Strange. Maybe he's sick.

I don't know how I feel about the new songs yet.

I wanted to straighten my hair, but now it may not be worth it.

Such large concerns I have in my life.

For three of the new songs there is an electric guitar, and a bass guitar for one of them. "Blinding Light" actually has a (small) guitar solo.

I haven't listened to the latest new stuff yet, but judging from the earlier ones, lately I've been wondering if they're not all a bit too high. I don't mean any notes are too high, but that the overall tessitura is too high for him to sing a whole program comfortably. I think one thing that contributed to the relaxed feel in some of the Model Prisoner songs was that they had lower range material. At least that's how I perceive them, I haven't actually checked what the notes are. I could be completely wrong.

lol, when in doubt, blame Larry.

Yeah, they just don't sound relaxed at all. I don't mean vocally, because he can hit those notes, but in terms of listening to them.

The thing is, I loved those first three songs, especially See Me Shining, but also hoped there would be a bit more variety to the new disc as a whole. To be fair, Civilian moved in this direction too. Although it's more consistent and thematically unified than MP, it also lost a lot of that sense of relaxation that about a third of the MP songs have.

I have to get ready to go now, see some of you tonight!

Some of it does feel vaguely reminiscent of Adam's really old stuff, especially all the wailing.

And I agree, I really like the first three that came out. And I like This Life, too.
