Was Adam's character supposed to be mentally unstable? It was confusing because he was rambling about murders - was he just upset by them or actually supposed to have shot someone?

Yes I did, but don't really have much interesting to report. I've been a little under the weather so didn't stay long. I saw two or three of the actors, but I don't think Adam stuck around. He may have been there at the very beginning before I made it into the room, which was the bar adjacent to the theater and part of the Zipper set-up. At any rate, I'm not sure I would have tried to meet him anyway. It's just not my style. However, it was worth the extra money to be front and center, and to help support a good cause. I enjoyed the show even better the second time and feel it definitely has potential.

As for Adam's character, I didn't think he was supposed to be unstable, necessarily, just very emotional and affected by all those events, which actually is how Adam himself reacted to 9/11. This time I could really see that the early song by Melissa Errico about losing her husband, during which she was crying a lot herself, got to him strongly. He was wiping away tears too. If his character was meant to be a killer I don't think he would have been assigned that beautiful, serene love song duet.

Hmm. The thought that his character may have been a would-be terrorist never crossed my mind. I think he sort of stands for the idea that post-9/11, many New Yorkers (and Americans in general) felt that they had to live in fear because they could be sure of nothing and trust nobody: "why is he smiling? Why am I racial profiling? I don't wanna get blown up today..." And that maybe in there, not only does he have to be scared of the people in his life, but perhaps of his own tendencies, too, because nobody can trust him -- the cops come after him just because he has a backpack, and he can't understand why they think he "looks like" a terrorist. I think the part where they talk about how they can "never know" each other is part of that increased disconnect Goodman sees in post-9/11 New York. Sure, there was all of that Patriotism and we came together in some ways, but I think part of what the show is getting at is that we're so afraid to get close to people -- so afraid to live our lives. I think Adam's character someone who's living in a lot of fear and discomfort, very upset and shaken by what's become of the world, and that those really intense moments he had in song were how those things manifested themselves in that kind of bad-boy character.

Just my $.02, though.

Oh, yeah, I see what you're saying. I guess it could be read either way, but I read it as a metaphor. Like, that you never know who it's going to be. Isn't there a line in that song with the gun where he says you can't ever pick out the person who's going to do these terrible things until after he does them? I think it was supposed to say "you never know, it might be me," as opposed to suggesting he'd gone over the edge. But I don't think it suggests that someone like him can't go that far, either. To me, it's about what that kind of constant panic does to someone's head. I thought his character, while underdeveloped without dialogue, was one of the most interesting in the group.

That song was entirely new since the workshop (and caught me off guard, I have to say), so I can't really offer any insight into potential dialogue there. In the NYMF version, Adam's character and the female artist perform a song about suicide bombers for an audience, so it's possible that there's some kind of framing like that involved. It's tough to know without any dialogue. It sounds like he's just extremely impacted by those things, not necessarily driven to violence by them....but you can get an entirely different perspective actually seeing it.
