ROGER IN RENT.
FOREVER.
KIDDING.
No, really. I don't have a problem with him singing slightly more legit stuff. In fact, I've wanted him to sing the score to Last 5 Years for the LONGEST time. Never gonna happen, though.

Well, I guess we can see why he'd hate the internet.
But honestly, I can understand where he'd think that another "rock guy" role would be a step down when he's trying to expand himself, especially at this point in his career. I can also see the point, though, that at after only having done three shows that it seems unlikely that he'd have a show written specifically for him, which I believe he's said in the past.
Oh, I agree, Chloe, he definitely can. He sounded adorable. For me, it comes down to... say, hypothetically, in a concert setting, he could draw on the more legit side of his range and do really nice renditions of a lot of "more traditional" theater music. But the knot for me occurs in terms of actually playing a role, and sounding believably like that "type" of character. To me, there's a big difference between acknowledging that he could sing a character's songs well and then extrapolating that to say he could play the role. So while he can sing and sound fine on Cliff's songs, I don't know that I'd cast him as Cliff, because it doesn't fit the sort of standard aesthetic. I think a lot of roles in shows like, say, Cabaret, require that standard, pretty "theater" voice, which Adam just doesn't have, you know? He got away with playing the Emcee, but that's a role that just breaks all the rules. To me, "more traditional" on him isn't necessarily traditional enough to fit that mold. I think I'm referring most directly to older shows, though, for what it's worth. I don't even know that he'd be interested in that sort of thing, but it all comes to mind.
Craww, yes, there is a big difference between those two. It's the type of material. But I'm not sure I agree with what you said after that. I think that certain kinds of material, while they can be handled by various different types, ask for specific types of vocals. I mean, you wouldn't put like, Brian Stokes Mitchell in a rock opera, would you? In a show like Aida, yeah, I think the material does demand it, whereas Chess is something that could go either way -- rock vocals or more "legit" vocals. You have a rock score, it should ideally be sung by rock singers. Of course, someone like Will Chase has a more traditional voice than Adam does, but it's still pretty distinctly along the rock lines.
Ash, you're right. But when this sort of thing comes up, I consistently contest that my level of being critical is in a direct correlation with how much I like the performer and his work.

I find them comparable enough in what they demanded of Adam, specifically, in range and as pop scores. I agree Aida's material demanded rock and roll singing. I don't think it demanded...rocker voice. I don't just mean his tone and strength, but his screechy higher register.
Maybe I was trying not to be too critical, because that could devolve pretty easily for me. I can leave that to those more genuine than I.

Do you like Chess? When sweetestsiren and I are rolling in money someday, we're so reviving it.
Well, if you're going to include screeching as a part of "rocker tone," then no, nothing particularly "demands" that. And no, I don't think Aida's score "demanded" a tone like Adam's (though really, how much music really would literally demand it?), but I think having someone like him sing a score like that was a good thing for it. Because Chess, to me, is sort of a hybrid between those 80's epic musicals and the even more contemporary rock musicals, it seems only obvious to me that Aida is more of a pop score, but their demands on him were pretty similar, you're right. Both scores demanded of him a decent mixture of belting and more lyrical singing.
My comment about being critical was merely one on my own tendencies, and had nothing to do with what you were saying, comparatively or whatever. It was in response to what sweetestsiren posted about Adam being damned by his fans no matter what he does. Your post read as though you might have taken it differently, so just for the record.
Yesss Chess revival.

I love Chess. I'll donate at least 5 dollars to the revival fund.
I was supposed to go see Chess tonight, but every time I stand up I feel like I'm going to puke. TMI? Heh. Um. Carry on...
Awww, feel better, Mandi.

You would think you guys would run out of stuff to say about one person. I know it's ADAM, but still...
We recycle a lot of what we say.
And go FAR off-topic more often than not.

No. I got ya. Not really disagreeing or anything.
so happy to be there.
Did you go to the concert?
Aww, I'm sorry that you're not feeling well, Mandi! Feel better. I was kind of curious to hear what you thought of that production if you ended up gong.
Now I have to resist the urge to totally geek out about Chess. Thanks for the donation offer! Suffice it to say, if I ever win the lottery? Chess will be back on Broadway in about ten seconds. I think that it'd be amazing for Adam to reprise the role of Freddie in a full production. His "Pity the Child" might just be the best it's ever been sung. We've also thought that Mr. Esparza would make a really interesting Anatoly, but I'm not sure how much of that is motivated by...just wanting to see them play opposite one another. Heh.
Oh, look? I didn't do so well with the not geeking out thing. On an Adam-related note, I gave Aida another chance, and while I don't hate it and it definitely has its moments, I can't say I'm a great fan. Adam and Heather have amazing chemistry together, though.

Elaborate Lives should be playing 24/7 on TV monitors surrounding me.
I'll be professionally residing in a cardboard box when this happens, so I can't offer you any monetary contribution, but I'll offer my pretend creative services.
Hey, Raul seemed interested in the prospect when we brought it up. You get working on those scratch-offs.

Coincedentally, both Chess and Aida are playing here within the next few months. Aida in the giant theatre, Chess in the 150 seater. Still don't know if I'll make it to Aida, but tiny Chess is a definite.
I can't say I'm at all adverse to Raul and Adam playing opposite each other.
The Aida tour scares me. I can't imagine you'll be missing too much if you don't get to see it.
I just ask that you two powers that be allow Raúl to wear his cool sunglasses, even as Anatoly.

"I don't mean to sound CONCEITED or anything, but I watch myself on YouTube, and I mean, I was COOL!"
heh! Well, it was always implicit, even before he said it. :)
He was cute about it, though. And I like that he seemed pretty sincere in saying that he'd love to be in Chess again in any part.
I'm not sure Anatoly would wear sunglasses, but we'll see.
