I think Adam and Daphne did have a brief thing, yes.
My parents bought me a book compiling most of John Simon's reviews from the 70's up to 2004; you guys probably all know who John Simon is, but he's a nutjob of a critic. He's mean, nasty, and a total racist and a bigot. He's called actresses out on being too ugly, and stuff. BUT, he's a brilliant writer.
Anyway, I wanted to share this:
The Radames, Adam Pascal (formerly of RENT), boasts of not having a single singing or acting lesson, which proves incontestable, and that he has ignored the Puccini and Verdi originals so as not to "taint his ideas" -- and unnecessary precaution, as he seems free from anything resembling those.
You know, as scathing as it is, this guy is just so witty that he can make it funny.
A while ago I had an idea that "The One That Got Away" could have been written about Daphne, but I got that purely from references in the song - "without you" and "as long as you remain my friend," and Daphne seems to fit the personality of someone who could "slam me down so gracefully." I never heard anything about them dating before though. In fact, when this came up on the old CB boards someone specifically said that they didn't. But who knows.

Are you asking how I know Elton likes to give watches? He's mentioned it several times. He loves to give gifts, and I know he gave some to the Aida cast. For instance, he bought Heather Headley a dress for one of the events around the opening.
ETA: I've been a fan of Elton's for years and learned a lot about him. Chloe is from the name of one of his songs.

I see, Chloe.
Siamese, thanks for posting those. Who's the guy beside Adam in the second curtain call photo?
Thanks, I don't remember seeing these before. You sure have some great pictures.
nia, I think he's either the conductor/musical director, or one of the producers. He looks familiar. I'm leaning toward the latter.
Are these from opening night?
I thought it could be Tim Rice, but don't remember exactly what he looks like.

Yes, it's Tim Rice. And yes, it's opening night. :)
Adam really looked great in his Aida period.
Siamese, was that Adam/Daphne rumor on the IMDb Rent board? I'm remembering that early on someone started an irresponsible Adam/Rosario rumor. It was quickly shot down, obviously girls making drama for themselves. But it just goes to show what being an even very minor celebrity can let you in for.
I was watching the American Theater Wing seminar Adam did in 1996. Isabelle Stevenson, the octogenarian head of the wing, was obviously fascinated by Rent and him, and the moderators were respectful too. What a moment for him, an unrepeatable time when someone bursts out of nowhere and knocks everyone out.
Adam's demeanor was interesting too. He wasn't cocky but not at all intimidated either, surrounded by these much more experienced classical actors, a writer from the New Yorker and so forth. He talked about dealing with unresponsive audiences in rock clubs as something that would either kill you or make you stronger, and how Greif let him find himself on stage. At the end an audience member asked what he'd be doing next, and he said he hesitated to do another musical, because how could you top the experience he'd just had? He's probably right about that.

I was just thinking about those rumors ... I think that a lot of rumors can get started just by people being friendly looking in pictures or being friends. (gasp! boys and girls can be FRIENDS?!)
I liked that Theater Wing video too. It is interesting to hear/read interviews and things from back then and now to compare and see how people change in a 10 year period.

Chloe, I believe someone (innocently, I think) asked if Adam and Daphne had dated during the early years of Rent on the IMDB Rent board. The poster said that he/she had read it somewhere else. Someone else responded with something to the extent of, "Yeah, they did. It was no secret." I think someone else after that seconded that they did in fact date. That's all I remember.
I'm pretty sure it wasn't malicious, though. I mean, if they did date, it was before either one of them were married, so it's certainly not scandalous. And it's certainly plausible.
Just from reading a few interviews, I've got the impression that he really didn't want to be a "Broadway star" early in his career, but he's grown more comfortable with that title. Hm.

BTW, is this Theater Wing video online?
