#1100homosexual and what it means
Posted: 8/25/05 at 10:41pm

I personally love the scene with Roy and Henry in Angels in America in which Roy explains that homosexual is unrelated to sexual preference because men who sleep with men can be found everywhere and anywhere, but only those who call themselves homosexuals are consistently seen as underpowered nobodies who 'can't get a F*CK*ing antidiscrimination bill through congress'.

Penguin, that sucks. But be greatful someone notices you're talking- my class discussions consist of me and the teacher. Everyone else sleeps. Updated On: 8/25/05 at 10:41 PM

My one thing that I really do love about college as opposed to high school is that there's not so much social tension. By virtue of having chosen where I am, I'm surrounded by people who I respect, rather than who I'm embarassed to be around - people with great intelligence and great opinions. I'm so thankful for that; I truly loathed high school.

hmm..I had posted something...and I have no idea where it went. o.O I need to look for it..I hope I didn't sent it to someone or something..

Anyway, I had said that I would be offended or mad at someone if they used it with more things along with it like something like..."That's gay. Doing (whatever thing they are insulting) is like being gay..." Then I'd be like "what is that supposed to mean?" or something...you know? : lol...It's weird.

Speaking of judgmental, I've given up reading the Trailer threads - they've devolved into bickering as usual. "Religious" people who hate and RENTheads who bicker - life is full of ironies.

I love that scene as well, nia. That was one of the things that hit me hardest upon initial viewing. (urgh, I forgot to bring that home I was going to use this week to get re-acquianted with it.)

I never like my voice to be faded into the crowd...so I'll like discussions. : P

Yeah, alot of people out there get way into the religious sense of things and totally ruin things for people... : (

You should show AiA to your Mom, Nia!

That scene has one of the greatest impacts of any in the show because so few people have ever thought of homosexuality meaning that. It's a new idea.

I don't read the trailer threads. My eyes will roll out of my head if I do.

Jean, so you just don't like it if they're specifically equating bad with gay as opposed to just using it as a passing insult?

yes it is interesting about terminology the prefered term here is "queer"
Jeanclaude what you say is exactly why I think most of us should avoid the term. I don't think you can accidentally send your message personally, maybe it just didn't take. Lost posts and double posts happen often. Sunday in the Park

Emcee, unfortuanately the tension is really high for me again, in part because of some of these issues and then the divide behind ideology in general, everyone chose to come here for VERY different reasons.

I stand corrected, you are as vapid as they say.

I gave up on the trailer thread, too. This is more interesting, anyway.

ETA - Penguin, you totally lost me. I think you're referring to school, and if you are, considering WHERE you go to school, I can totally see how that would come into play. *pat pat* I hope it gets better.

Yeah I guess...I know it might be dumb, but I mean, I use it, but it's not on purpose either...it's just a thing that people are used to saying...I just don't mind, unless they actually insist on saying that gay, and that action or thing, are bad and stupid. Then I'd say something about it...

Or if someone uses it for like every single thing they see...then I'll tell them to shut up.

So, then jeanclaude, I'd be curious - again, if you don't mind saying so - what do you refer to yourself as, since you're used to the term "gay" being used a different way? I've been sort of intrigued by that - the different ways in which people choose to refer to themselves, and the rigid technicalities that are part of those terms.

I want to stay away, but I always wind up involved. *tries not to look* I hate the arguing but always someone says something SO Ridiculous I can't help it.

yep Em, it is WHeRE I go. I chose it and I am so glad to live here, but sometimes it is too much for me. (do we have a rep over where you are?)

I refer to myself as gay...I don't think it's a bad thing..I don't think being gay is bad at all...since I am...

It's just a random word used as like..well..saying for example:

"We have three hours or homework to do"

"That's gay...: ("

But I don't use it on purpose, or said "I'm going to use gay as an insult! yay!"

Nothing like that...

Ellie, she'd never let me watch or read it again! I wish I could, though, but I think it'd be so much of a shock to her that she'd miss the point entirely.

Jean, that makes sense in a finer-details sort of way. If they're not insulting gay people, just using the world out of habit, I can see it being less offensive.

Nia, I'm sure your teachers must find your conversations challenging. Any progress on the college front?

Unfortunately hip-hop may have contributed to all the gay insults going around high schools now. All the better that Kanye West has spoken out against homophobia. Now there's a brave guy. It's a sad historic pattern that various minorities tend to turn against each other.

I am really not sure, but I got a real lecture for refering to one of my friends as homosexual (not by him incidentally) Homosexual is unacceptable to some because apparently it is accoiated with heterosexual being the norm. I don't really agree, but that's what I was told.

Really? Thats gay. (hehe..I had to) But why would he go out and talk against it. That's dumb, especially since there are many more supporters of it now..especially with all the gay guys on tv now...

Edit: I think...just as in any person. An insult said with complete passion to the insult, can be hurtful, whatever insult is being used. As one would imagine, 'faggot' said with a hurtful and passionate hateful tone would hurt anyone..especially one who's gay. Updated On: 8/25/05 at 10:57 PM

I tried to get my mother to watch AiA. She read a magazine instead of paying the TV screen any mind at all. Sunday in the Park

nah, Penguin - you guys don't have a visible bad rep where I am... not that I've heard of, anyway.

Chloe - I had MTV on randomly this evening, and there was something about hip-hop and homophobia. But the guy was using way too much slang for me to have any idea of what he was ACTUALLY saying.

I had read a great article where Anthony Rapp addressed the difference between calling yourself gay and calling yourself queer. I don't remember where it was, though. I'll look.

Well maybe one day, Nia! I'm sure she'd enjoy it...maybe if you fore-warned her of it's content, and gently co-erced her into watching it, she might change some of her opinions such as all gay men are flamer-types who do nothing but make out!

Just don't be in the room with her when she's watching it. Sunday in the Park
