Depends on where you go. If you go to Bali, then not at all. In fact, many Balinese can speak not only English but Japanese and Korean, etc. They really do accommodate to the tourists. Also no problem if you go to the big cities like Jakarta. If you want to go to the jungles of North Kalimantan, then even speaking Indonesian won't help. Updated On: 10/23/04 at 11:55 PM

I would want to see the jungle if I could go... guess I'm out of luck. What are the cities like? What kind of things are there to see and do?

You guys want to hear an interesting story? My brother was sent to Kalimantan a few months ago to audit a community development project that was sponsored by one of the US mining companies. He went pretty deep into the jungle and visited a tribe, where, apparently, it is customary to offer their wives or daughters for the night to a visitor as a sign of welcome and friendship (or something like that, I couldn't quite understand it). Interesting, what you can learn of other's culture .

Don't worry, insomniak... As a woman, the concept freaked me out a bit too. I'm still not quite convinced that he understood them correctly, but it's not out of the question. But I'm proud that my younger brother was able to pick up his jaw somewhat gracefully off the floor and to decline without offending them.

I so wanted to get the delivery to you but somehow we can't get the red bow around it at the moment. At this moment it's too big for the bow... maybe it'll fit again a bit later
