I found that too Keen. I thought that most of the movie was a little hard to follow (and down right boring), until Raul's scenes popped up and then it was like "hey! This is interesting!"

interesting tidbit

I'm pretty excited about Bounce, actually. My next NYC trip keeps getting bounced back (no pun intended), so I'm hoping I might be able to catch this.
Riedel wrote about it in his column today with this attached:
Sondheim footnote:
If you were among the 12 people who watched last Sunday's Tony Awards, surely you noticed the stunned look on "Company" star Raul Esparza's face when the award for Best Actor in a Musical went to David Hyde Pierce ("Curtains").
Esparza did a double-take worthy of Lucille Ball.
The next day, my spies report, Esparza was talking to Sondheim.
"Well, I guess I'll get over it," Esparza said.
"No you won't," Sondheim snapped. "I'm still not over 'West Side Story' " - which lost every major Tony to "The Music Man" in 1957.
Oh those NY Post spies...
Riedel's been out to get Raul for years.
I think he recently got caught with some serious misinformation, though. His stuff is almost always true, and this well could be, but he also just randomly makes things up.
The look on his face broke my heart.
Anyway, I've heard Bounce is TERRIBLE, but OMGDOYLE. It's interesting that it would go from Mendes' hands to Doyle's, since I keep saying that Doyle's work on the Sondheim shows reminds me of Mendes' direction of Cabaret.
Raul called Riedel a "bottom-feeding pig" in a Playbill interview....HA!
I know nothing about Bounce...could this be a next show for Raul?
I've heard Bounce is awful too, but I think it would be cool to see something new from Sondheim at the Public. Plus, with Doyle attached... I'm so there (passport pending)!
It's funny because when I first heard how ground-breaking Doyle's Sweeney was, I thought "didn't Mendes do something like that with Cabaret a couple of years ago...?" (Not to discredit either director, of course). I hope the Bounce and the (revival of the) Cabaret revival runs over-lap a bit. That way if I can make it to New York, I can see both. :)
I didn't get to see Raul's face after the award was announced...part of my is dying to see it, and part of me thinks i was lucky that i was in the second mezz and wasn't watching the screens...
someone said something about the Tonys to him last night and his face was heartbreaking all over again....
i'm sure it's going to take a long while to get over.
i feel like had he won, there would have been more closure to it; now that loss is like a big open wound, and the show's closing only adds to the pain.
it's amazing/frightening how quickly someone can go from feeling like they're on top of the world to totally dissapointed in this business.
Why would someone bring up the Tonys? Poor guy. Yeah, that look was heartwrenching. Sorry to hear about your camera, by the way obsessed (I just read back through the posts).
Kate -- I wonder if you might be able to see 'the face' on that site... Someone might post DHP's win or something. It's seriously tough to watch though. (I almost watched the western feed after watching the live Tony telecast, but had to change the channel before the category was announced.)

Obsessed, I'm just glad those two SKETCHY guys with the big Tony poster left before he came outside. I have no idea what they were planning to say or do, but it surely would have sullied the nice mood at the stagedoor last night.
I looked, Jenna - sadly, everything else from the night is posted except for that!
In situations like this people think they're helping, but... WHY would you bring it up? I want to like, implant common sense upon people. I wasn't going to talk to him on Tuesday night, but when I decided to go over to him, I sure as hell wasn't going to say anything directly about the awards. Given what I did say, though, he knew what I meant, and thanked me for being there.
I didn't see the reactions in real time. I don't even remember that moment. Everything just kind of... blurred. I re-watched my tape because I was morbidly curious to see his face, and it was so upsetting.
The instrument thing actually isn't the main reason I draw the parallel between Mendes and Doyle. I think it's about the way they understand and tell a story.
Me too misschung! They were so weird.

And they didnt even look like they would mention the Tony's in order to try and be supportive, judging from the language they were using. I was like uh oh, this is going to be bad!
That's a situation when I'm glad Raul took awhile to come out after the show
What they say, exactly?
I guess I'm lucky in that even if I HAD shoved my foot down my throat, he'd have known what I meant 'cause it's obvious that I support him.
yes, my desire to see that tape is a mere morbid fascination. maybe if i need a good cry at some point i'll look for it again.
wow.
thank god they left. that could have been disasterous.

Wow. Sounds like me!
In situations like this people think they're helping, but... WHY would you bring it up?
I wish the people here would exercise that same common sense. Considering all the superficial comments about how "upset" everyone is, you certainly don't mind obsessing over it and talking about nothing else. Not everyone wants to read about it over and over and over again and believe it or not, Raul isn't the only one who is actually upset and doesn't need the constant reminders. Would it kill you all to show others the same courtesy you give him?

New topic - anyone see the Thursday or Friday night performances? How were the audiences?
I was there on Thursday with misschung. The only section that was empty was the rear mezz and the audience was very receptive. Rob Cunningham commented on how great the audience was too.

Raul's official website has been disabled since yesterday. Anyone know what's going on?
It goes in and out sometimes. I'm sure it's nothing serious.
I think it's great that they've been getting such great audiences now, and I hope they will continue to for the final performances, but I can't help but be a little bit frustrated -- they deserved to have great audiences for their entire run, and now they're only getting them at the very end.
Also, I love this.
It made me smile.
