This doesn't exactly fit into the conversation, but I remember thinking (and posting, at one point) that Adam was great as the Emcee, but Raul WAS the Emcee. I think that's very represenative of their performances.
I think that's a good observation. And it's interesting, because I know that Alan Cumming was the definitive Emcee, having totally recreated the role for the revival, so he *was* the Emcee, but I think that Raul is pretty much on par with Alan in terms of claiming the role as his own and *being* the Emcee. Raul had a different take on the character, but it still rang completely true in the context of the show. I think anyone trying to immitate Alan Cumming's Emcee would fail miserably. I'm curious about how the replacements in between them did.
A lot of the subtlties and Alan's little quirks were picked up by his successor(s) and then passed down through all of the guys who played the part, which is kind of unfortunate for them, and for their fans, because it's impossible for them to be given *all* that much credit. Some of them took more ownership of the adlibs than others, some just used Alan's, almost word for word, but the framework was his and Mendes' creation.
Funny thing: Riedel called Raul a "twerp," who wanted to be Alan Cumming.
What an upstanding guy.
I love Raul's "Not While I'm Around," too.
Yeah, that's only one of the many reasons that I would jump at the opportunity to kick Riedel in the head. The fact that he's made a career of being hurtful is pathetic. The one and only time I ever saw him in person, I was... kinda angry and wanted to go slap him. But... you don't do that. Better, people were boo-ing.

i.e. Excuse to post the pretty pictures.
I was really close to buying the windowcard with Raul and Molly, but I decided against it for lack of funds.

Lol, was I that obvious SS? I do love that pic of Alan though... and I never get to post it. So many good looking Emcee's, here's Norbert:
EDIT: Strange that he didn't have to dye his hair...

Raul looks so incredibly, incredibly beautiful in that poster. Something about his face is so, so captivating.
Is it a photograph or a painting?
I think that it's a photograph, Elphie.
Okay, the eye around Norbert's bellybutton is weird.
It's a photograph, I've seen the windowcard in person.
Shiksa, Norbert didn't have to dye his hair because he was in the national tour, not the Broadway production.
Uh oh, sexual confusion. Uh oh, flutter your eyes..

Is there a list of all national tour Emcees? I saw it in early 2003, I believe.
Heh, Mandi, I was looking at the list of replacements on IBDB just now. I saw his name and thought that there was no way I could imagine him as the Emcee. Perfect timing.
