It's a fun recording, but Taboo is much more worth it.

The book for Taboo is terrible, but the music is amazing.

Aaand, I'm not a huge Daphne fan either, but she's a good Magenta.

I'll get Taboo next time I visit Bullmoose Music (they're a local store by me and they have lots of cool stuff - that's where I've found most of my cast recordings and such).

My thoughts on COMPANY and my conversation with Raul are on the on-topic board, but...

I just wanted to say...

He's so tiny!

Well, not really, but for some reason I thought he was taller than five-eight... I think I have about half an inch on him.

It was cute.

This was pointless.

G'bye!

Bumping because the Company threads are slow on the broadway board.

I was actually thinking today that if Michael Cerveris' show Lovemusik (I believe) gets a house this season, there could be another Esparza v Cerveris Tony battle again.

Don't even say it...

I ran into a friend from school who was also seeing the show on my way in on Tuesday night, and I just ran into her again, so we talked about the show a little bit. on Tuesday I told her I'd seen it before the transfer, and she wanted to know how it was, so I told her it was beautiful and all that. She liked it, and most of the problems she had were things that'll tighten as opening nears, but one of the first things she said was that she didn't love the actor playing Bobby. Of course, she didn't know about my allegiance to him... To great talent... I don't take it personally or anything, it's just kind of sad (yet interesting) that people are so divided on him. She said she doesn't mind coldness and distance, but she said to her, Bobby should maintain those two things without becoming disinterested. I was bummed that she didn't like him, though.

I still don't understand how people can think of him as cold... He is anything but cold in this role. Is he playing it differently or something, because when I saw it in Cincy Bobby was warm, confused, distracted, somewhat disinterested, but not cold. Never cold.

I definitely understand how people can see it -- his Bobby DOES have cold moments, but I think that's sort of the point. I can also see why people think he's a cold performer and use it as an insult. I see it, I just happen to like it.

Do you think the Tony committee would award Raul over Michael if there were to be a battle this year?

I would certainly hope so -- not only out of equivocal fairness, but because he deserves it.

I know nothing about Lovemusik (in fact I had to go look up how to spell it) but I can't imagine the non-hypedness of the show and/or Michael's role in it would lead to it trumping Raul's performance.

I don't want to be a snob, but it seems like the people that complain Raul is cold aren't very familiar with the show (or at least, as familiar with the show as they claim to be). If you don't understand the purpose of the show, then his characterization of Bobby as being distant doesn't make sense and so you blame that on the actor. But if Bobby were a happy-go-lucky playboy the entire show with no emotional arch, what would the point of the show be? In addition, has Sondheim *ever* written a consistently happy-go-lucky character?

I don't think you wanna see how pissed I'm going to be if Raul loses. Just so you know. To great talent... I know it's just an award, but... he just deserves to win.

It's too bad I don't see it as clear cut as you do! He gives a wonderfully nuanced performance and, I, too, think he should win, but I'm not ready to engrave his name on the Tony yet.

Hey hey hey... I want Raul to give the performance of a lifetime, and I want him to win the Tony, but the fact of the matter is Raul gave a wonderful, wonderful performance, but not "Write your speech now" kind of performance.

Just don't forget there's always "The Times..."

I know I probably won't word this correctly, but I'm curious; does anyone know if the cast of Company will record a new soundtrack like they did for revival of Sweeney Todd?

According to the website: New Broadway Cast Recording Coming Soon on Nonesuch.

Which, btw....is the same company that recorded Sweeney Todd.

I'm not talking in the sense of "engrave it now" syndrome, because there's so much politics and crap involved that he may very well lose. The whole idea of "engrave that Tony now!" is to say that the performance is by all standards deserving of one. A good portion of his competition hasn't even stepped on their respective Broadway stages yet, and there are so many little biases that are going to come into play to be considered. The whole system is ridiculous, really, as "important" as it all is. If he loses this year, it's certainly not going to put an ugly stamp on his career, but it's a matter of wanting to see the kind of work he's doing in Company be given the recognition it deserves. The fact that he shouldn't sit down and write his speech tomorrow, to me, isn't a measure of his work; it's a measure of the political bullsh*t that's going to be involved, depending on his competition.

Brina, yes, they will.
