I know it's expensive, my sisters going to college next fall.. but I earned it, so I should be able to spend it the way I want.

SG, I see your point, but assumedly her parents are going to be the ones helping to pay for college. If they're helping out, then I think it's their right to say if she can spend $1000 of her money on a ticket or if that $1000 needs to go to the college fund.
If she's paying for college completely on her own... well, then that's a different story.
That's not how real life works. I made around $4000 last summer, if I wanted to do what I wanted, I would be going to New York for random weekends, buying CDs, clothes, etc. Put that money towards something, like a bond, let if grow, you'll be kicking yourself down the road.

I think the word-of-mouth for this production is incredible! Each time I was in the audience at the Playhouse I could not believe how many people were raving. "This is supposed to be fabulous!", "You won't want to miss this!", "This show is the best I've seen!"
It was so exciting. I'm not sure many people realize what kind of talent they are in for with Raul.
The final scene, after he sings "Being Alive", where he is standing in the spotlight/candle and just smiles the most amazing smile before the lights go out - I'll never forget that.
I want to see it again!

I guess I just am of the belief that if someone is mature enough to raise that much money (and believe me, there are plenty of 25 year olds who aren't), that they should be mature enough to decide where it goes. It will mean sacrifices that she is most likely willing to make, and you do only live once. And honestly, $1000.00 towards college does not make that much of a dent depending on where you go, especially 3 years ahead of time. I guess I'm just living on the wishful hope that I had the money to go and it really sucks that someone who does have it can't. BTW Mel, I really like your avatar

It really was kind of magical. I'm really... kind of... proud to have been there for this. And regardless of all of the outer personal stigma at play, I'm proud OF him. It's always really amazing to witness one of those performance that is just absolutely embraced and loved and raved about.
And I do truly believe that he's happy doing this. Even if in a lot of ways, he's playing out a mirror of himself.
I really want to be able to see Raúl perform one day. I love his voice.
Thanks Shiska.. I think I should be able to go too, but it doesn't seem like that's going to happen .

Mel, I think that they can't see why you want to throw your money away on a performance that lasts an hour or two. 1000 dollars isn't to be taken lightly. Your parents want you to spend your money to buy your own tihngs, but at the same time, they want you to learn how to managethat money. Spending 1000 dollars on anything is a big deal. This is a performance, t isn't an item. You can never use it, so in their eyes, it's not money well spent. No matter how much you would like to go, it's still not managing your money wisely.
I am SO excited about Company.
$1000 covers books and some extras. And there's a difference between being mature enough to raise $1000 and have to pay for things. You can't really judge maturity on money. I don't have $1000 in my bank right now, but I'm paying almost $600 in bills a month. If you're not paying for things, it's easier to raise the money. It won't cover much for university, but it'll cover enough, and it's a significant sum to hold onto.
I know that's true..but it does go to a good cause, and it's just so annoying because there's nothing stopping me from going except for the fact that I'm under 18 and need their permission.

Every time I come here I get more and more excited. I can't belive that I am going to be witnessing Raul in 'person'... I've never had that, and it's gonna be an experience I can tell.
Can we keep the Rent benefit comments/complaints/discussions out of this thread? It really has nothing to do with Raul, especially since there are dozens of other threads on both the main and off-topic boards. Raul hasn't been doing anything for 3.5 months and we finally have reason to discuss him again. We don't need to bog down his thread with extraneous crap.
Anyway, the Times review is great. It's really interesting that a regional production like this is getting so much attention.

I know there is a difference, but what I'm saying is that a person is never going to learn how to manage their money if their parents are looking over their shoulder every second. I know they mean well, but the teenage years are for mistakes, and there are worse things a person could do than blow $1000.00 on seeing a once in a lifetime performance with people they admire.
EDIT: Sorry, last comment!

(not trying to sidetrack from Raúl) I don't want you all to judge me on my age. I'm not *that* young, I'm in my teens.
I completely agree with you Shiska..I wish my parents felt that way.

That Times review is stellar.
People kept saying that it was too early to discuss, but now with all of these great reviews, what does everyone have to say about a transfer to Broadway?

Mel, I'm not sure if you were asking me, but I am seeing him on April 2nd! *is too excited for words*
I've heard people saying that it's too similar to Sweeney, but it's been getting raves. I geuss that we'll just have to wait and see.
The reviews make it seem like it's still in the cards, for sure. But I have to wonder if it won't be met by criticism here because it IS really similar to Sweeney.
My mom will eat me if they transfer and Raul sticks with it.

Ooh, I know it's not for a week or so, but have fun Shiska!
I hope Company does come to broadway.
