Adriana Barraza was incredible in "Babel." Her desert scene is without doubt the most memorable in the film. Just chilling.

Honestly, the only two performances that might even touch Javier Bardem and Tom Wilkinson's weren't even nominated. Those are David Kross in "The Reader" and Paul Dano in "Little Miss Sunshine." Both young actors gave incredible performers that deserved Oscars in their respective years.

I think Steve Carell deserved the supporting actor nod for ".,..Sunshine", but that Eddie Murphy deserved to win. I have no idea why Arkin was even nominated.

I agree that Arkin was the least memorable of the males in "Sunshine" but I definitely think Dano was the stand-out.

Of the men nominated that year, Murphy totally deserved it. But I enjoyed Dano much more.

I thought David Cross lacked any sort of presence and depth in THE READER and thought he had no chemistry with Kate Winslet (whom I always love but didn't really like in this particular film), he was rightfully ignored by the Academy, IMO.
LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE had a great ensemble, Paul Dano and Steve Carrell were both excellent. Alan Arkin had the showiest role though and he was the veteran. It's only a matter of time before Dano gets nominated, he's a great actor.
I also think that Heath Ledger and Christoph Waltz were brilliant in their winning roles in ways that someone like David Cross could only dream of.

Totally agree with the Carell/Arkin point. It reminded me of when Penny Fuller was nominated for the Tony for The Dinner Party for delivering the least memorable performance in the show. I actually enjoyed the play, but with the hilarious performances being given by John Ritter, Henry Winkler, Veanne Cox and Jan Maxwell, Penny Fuller gets nominated?!?! For...barely keeping her ill-fitted strapless gown aloft?

Ray-

I understand Arkin's veteran status, but I'd disagree and say that Dano's was the showiest role- the most dramatic at least. But no use arguing there!

I thought David Kross was one of the reasons "The Reader" worked so well. I found his performance to be so layered and moving. Truly a winning performance in my book.

I love discussing "The Reader" with people, especially my Jewish friends. It's such an interesting piece with two really remarkable performances and a story that really captures me.
