I was just discussing with a friend this morning how ludicrous it is that Hopper was nominated for HOOSIERS and not BLUE VELVET.

Bonham Carter should have been nominated for HOWARDS END, for sure.

Dennis Quaid was definitely robbed of a nomination. Certainly best performance of his career. I also thought Julianne Moore should have won that year over Nicole Kidman.

To be fair, it was also the most he'd been given to work with. I saw the same kind of depth of portrayal in THE ROOKIE, even though the material wasn't as involved.

My biggest "deserved to wins" are from years ago. And they weren't even nominated.

Agree. I have already mentioned that i did not like when Gary Sinese lost Forrest Gump. I laughed when I saw an old interview with Samuel L. Jackson as well who talked about losing to Landau who was in Ed Wood for three minutes.

With regard to another I was surprised an not even getting a nomination, it would have to be Robin Wright for me. I watched Forrest again last night, and it really baffles me. I thought she was brilliant.

If Samuel L. Jackson said that about Martin Landau being in ED WOOD for three minutes, then all I can say is that Samuel L. Jackson needs to go f*ck himself and get a better idea of how long three minutes really is.

I agree with the comments about Dolores Claiborne. An extraordinarily underrated film.

And I have to add Magnolia and Empire of the Sun for Best Picture. To me, they should not only have been nominated, but won.

he was kidding. it was a replay of an old Jonathon Ross chat show and Jonathan who is also a bit of a comedian asked him about it. they were joking.

I ever saw Ed Wood, so i cannot comment on the performance. Suporting roles are subjective. i was surprised with Kim Bassinger's win and yet not surprised Viola Davis was nominated with Amy Adams even though Amy had a huge role. I thought Viola was stellar in Doubt.

To be fair, I don't think anyone today actually thinks Kim Basinger deserved the Oscar that year.

Kim Basinger was the only thing I liked about L.A. Confidential, but I thought Joan Cusack should have won that year for In & Out.

No way in hell was Connelly the lead in A BEAUTIFUL MIND. Crowe was. The movie was about John Nash not his wife Alicia, and Crowe was the only name billed above the title. Connelly may have been the actress with the most screen time in that movie (there really weren't any other important female characters), but her character was obviously supporting the main character. This was not a case of bumping her to supporting for a better chance at the trophy. There was only one protagonist in the movie (Nash), the rest were supporting players.

I also think that Lorraine Bracco should have won Best Supporting Actress for GOODFELLAS (sorry, Whoopi), Albert Brooks should have won Best Supporting Actor for BROADCAST NEWS and that Chloe Webb deserved a nomination for SID AND NANCY.

StageManager, sorry but Jennifer Connelly had what was clearly a lead role, if you don't think so then that's too bad, but Connelly herself thought so since she entered herself in the lead race at the SAG Awards (unlike the Oscars, at the SAG actors can enter themselves in whatever category they think their roles fit) so maybe there is "a way in hell" that to some people--including the actress herself and her agents--she was the female lead of that terrible film. Either way, whether she was supporting or lead, she was absolutely adequate in every way, and it's sad that the Academy felt for such an Oscar-baity performance in such an Oscar-baity, conventional and in every way conservative movie.

Ugh, I hate it when actors talk about how much they deserved to win a specific year, it always comes off as sore and immature, especially when they bash the winning performance along the way. I still can't believe Terrence Howard said he was very disappointed when his name wasn't called, when clearly Philip Seymour Hoffman was the favorite and Heath Ledger and Joaquin Phoenix probably came in second and third.
Besty, I loooove Bette Davis in OF HUMAN BONDAGE! What a performance! Doesn't it have the reputation of changing film acting for actresses or something like that? I thought she was marvelous in it and gave what I thought should have been a winning performance. Can't believe it wasn't even nominated officially by the Academy.

The whole what is a leading role versus supporting role is so subjective but also so full of politics when it comes to the Academy Awards. A lot of it strategy by the studios and producers to get more people honored or give certain people the best chance. What made John Travolta the leading man against Samuel L. Jackson a supporting character. Forget that movie was an ensemble altogether, it was still absurd those two were not in the same category but Miramax wanted both to get nominated and perhaps win.

I have grown to really admire Landau's uncanny turn as Bela Lugasi in Ed Wood. For those who have not watched it, please do. Johnny Depp should have been nominated and the film is on a long list of what was better than Best Picture winner Forrest Gump that came out in 1994.

Anne Hathaway totally deserved her nomination for Rachel Getting Married. And should have won over Kate Winslet. I like her in everything, but didn't think The Reader was an Oscar winning performance. Biggest should have won. Leonardo Decapprio (sp)in What's Eating Gilbert Grape over Tommy Lee Jones The Fugitive.

I honestly think The Incredibles deserved a Best Picture nomination. 2004 was not a particularly strong year and The Incredibles was fantastic.

I think the whole Jennifer Connolly BEAUTIFUL MIND thing can be summed up by saying that while Jennifer Connolly was the female lead, it still amounted to a supporting role. The movie is about Russell Crowe, not her. And I can't say I care, what a dull film it is, anyway.

It reminds me of what happened with Jessica Lange with TOOTSIE. She's the female lead in the film, but she was nominated in the supporting category, with some justice, I'm afraid. It's a supporting role, I'd say. Alas, her win that year was a total consolation prize for losing the Best Actress nomination for FRANCES to La Streep, and it meant that the far more deserving supporting actress nominee, the great Teri Garr, undeservedly went home empty handed for the biggest role of her career.

I do find it terrible as well. but hey, they are being honest. hell, if i got an oscar nomination i would be dissappointed. i think it is the way the admission comes out which turns me off. I don't think Gary Sinese said a thing and most losers are gracious.

I see. Well, I think the award itself was subjective regardless. The come back story would have been John Travolta in that whole movie. Actually, Tim Roth was fantastic and Samuel L. Jackson was "typical" in my opinion. As far as Jennifer Connely, it reminds me of the Tony's and Viola Davis. she was the female lead, ergo, she was nominated for leading female actor.

Another Johnny Depp one I was surprised with no nomination was for BLOW
I thought he, Rachel Griffiths and even Ray Liotta were fab. the post about Good Fellas reminded me of this actually. Brocco was amazing in that. were any nominated for Blow ? I don't recall.

I agree than Hathaway deserved the nomination and quite possibly the win. I think Kate was a shoe in for a couple of reasons. She was nominated for both the Reader and Revolutionary Road at the GG's, and she had lost 5 times in the past when 4 of which she should have won for.

Melissa Leo actually was my favorite female lead performance that year though Kate was due at some point. It was a great performance and as troubling as that character (and movie) was Revolutionary Road was just a painful movie experience that was in many ways doomed with many moviegoers expecting a rehash of Titanic. Good performance but the movie is incredibly depressing, though I loved how polarizing her April Wheeler was.

I adore Tootsie and loved the entire cast. I do think Teri Garr unfortunately got the spotlight taken away from her by Jessica Lange (though I would not call her a lead, it does take a while for her to appear in the film IIRC). I thought Dustin Hoffman gave the best performance of his career, remarkable in that he plays essentially 3 characters with so much sincerity but that year the competition was fierce (Newman for The Verdict, Jack Lemmon in Missing, and O'Toole in My Favorite Year) and nobody could stop Ben Kingsley from winning.

Hate to kick a movie down but wow, A Beautiful Mind. I actually liked Russell Crowe's performance despite the many, many problems with how the character was written in such a sympathetic tone (this is what also turned me off to Scorsese's The Aviator) compared to real life. Then of course the same Ron Howard does Cinderella Man which basically raises Jim Braddock, who in real life just seemed morally ambiguous and dim, and trash Max Baer's legacy to make for good drama.

Roscoe, I couldn't agree more with you re A BEAUTIFUL MIND, one of the dullest films I've seen and what a boring choice for Best Picture and Director (David Lynch was robbed, IMO).
I'm glad to hear people agree that Kate Winslet's performance in THE READER was hardly the best that year. It's sad that of all the brilliant performances she has given (particularly in ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND), this is the one she has an Oscar for. As Katharine Hepburn once said, you never win for the right role. I was rooting for Streep, but Hathaway definitely gave a worthy performance as well.
I wish Teri Garr had won over Lange but yes, she was definitely being awarded for losing to Meryl. They should have just had a tie for lead actress, though I imagine Meryl won by a landslide.

I really thought Kate's dialect and the way she portrayad both characters in the Reader and Revolutionary Road was brilliant. I think she was worthy of her win.

I am surprised no one has mentioned CZJ's win for Chicago.

I'd have given FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING the prize over BEAUTIFUL MIND, and Peter Jackson the Director prize that year, certainly over Lynch's painful MULHOLLAND DR. But that's just me.

CZJ's win for The Film That Shall Not Be Named is ridiculous, among the least deserved ever, particularly over Julianne Moore's magnificent performance in THE HOURS, for me one of the great performances in film.

Julianne could have easily won 2 Oscars that night and I would have had no problem with it though I hated The Hours but loved Far From Heaven. Meryl was also great in Adaptation. that year and I would have had no complaints if she had won her category.
