Winslet was brilliant in Iris. She should have won.

I think Steve Carell deserved the supporting actor nod for ".,..Sunshine", but that Eddie Murphy deserved to win. I have no idea why Arkin was even nominated.

I really liked Arkin but Steve deserved the nom.

I think she was brilliant in all of her nominations (maybe not so much Titanic for me but i see the nod)

eternal sunshine of the spotless mind she was fantastic in as well. she is just a versatile, great actress all around in my book.

Winslet should have gone for ETERNAL SUNSHINE, she was just amazing in it, I can't say I liked her in THE READER but personally I thought the whole movie was a pretentious misconceived mess (but I get people liked it and liked her in it). I agree with Roscoe her performance in LITTLE CHILDREN is extraordinary, but that year I preferred Penelope Cruz' fresh star turn in VOLVER (I'd have voted for those two instead of Helen Mirren).
I love Winslet in IRIS! Anyone but Jennifer Connelly should have won that year, I still can't believe she's an Oscar winner, not only that, but she won for Supporting when she clearly was the lead of the movie.

Helen Mirren's performance in THE QUEEN was absolutely incredible. There's no way I could've voted for anyone but her that year- no matter how great Cruz, Winslet and Streep were.

ETERNAL SUNSHINE is one of the best pictures in recent memory. Definitely in my top 5. It most definitely was under-recognized.

I quite liked Jennifer Connelly in A BEAUTIFUL MIND, but that movie did very little for me.

Connelly deserved a nod for "Requiem For a Dream".

Connelly also really impressed me in "He's Just Not That Into You"- though of course that was far from an Oscar bait film. But her performance was very powerful.

Piper,
Phillip Seymour Hoffman for Doubt or Charlie Wilson's War? I thought he was severely miscast in Doubt but that whole movie bothered me. Also in the same year as Heath Ledger and I also much prefer Michael Shannon and Josh Brolin's performances that year to PSH. I also think Capote as a whole film was very meh (see In Cold Blood if you want your true crime fix of the actual story). Great performance but he should have been nominated for Synedoche, New York which really was not thrown a bone at all during Oscar time.

I normally roll my eyes at mimicry winning people Oscars (Jamie Foxx and Reese Witherspoon) but Mirren (and also Cotillard) were far and away the exceptions. Both incredibly deserving.

I loved Tom Wilkinson in Michael Clayton but he was not going to win in the same category as Javier Bardem. His opening monologue really set the tone.

Basically Wilkinson starts the film and Tilda closes it out but also the closest thing you get to George Clooney, without drastic physical transformation, where you feel like you are not watching George Clooney.

I didn't think Tilda Swinton deserved to win at all.

And Hoffman should NOT have been recognized for "Synedoche, New York", which is one of the absolute worst pieces of garbage I have ever seen. It's unwatchable.

Really, Munk? Why not? Who would have been your choice? I'm just curious, I think people find her win sort of polarizing. I'm of the camp that thought her work in MICHAEL CLAYTON was absolutely brilliant, she took a small role that would have been played as a big cliche by any other actress, and just made it one of the most significant parts of the movie. She was a great villain and just seeing her world fall apart in front of the camera at the end is so incredibly fascinating, at least for me, I think it's a beautiful acting job.

My biggest "deserved to wins" are from years ago. And they weren't even nominated.

Kathy Bates in "Dolores Claiborne"
Judy Parfitt in "Dolores Claiborne"

Matt Damon in "The Talented Mr. Ripley"

Each time I watch those movies I get really frustrated with the "Hollywood machine" that failed to recognize their brilliant work.

I thought Swinton was great in the role and deserved a nomination, but to me it wasn't an Oscar performance. Though, so few are.

Personally, I would have voted for Amy Ryan (GONE BABY GONE) that year. I also wouldn't have minded if Saoirse Ronan won for ATONEMENT.

I'm just glad Cate Blanchett didn't win.

Munk, I was sort of rooting for Ryan (hadn't seen GONE BABY GONE at the time but just really like her and respect her) and Saoirse Ronan whom I thought gave a great performance in ATONEMENT. I've yet to see GONE BABY GONE, but after seeing MICHAEL CLAYTON recently I'm quite glad Swinton won. It was a very strong year for Supporting Actress, I'd say and I can see an argument for several of them winning.

Besty, I couldn't agree more with you about Matt Damon in THE TALENTED MR.RIPLEY! I think that's one of my favorite performances by a leading actor in the past twenty years or so, and like you every time I watch the movie I feel quite disappointed, sad and bothered that his performance wasn't even nominated. I loved Kevin Spacey in AMERICAN BEAUTY but what Damon does in MR.RIPLEY is brilliant. Such a shame he wasn't recognized at all, whereas Jude Law got a nod. Then again I feel the whole film was poorly treated at the Oscars that year.
Another performance that I think should have won and wasn't even nominated was Dennis Quaid in FAR FROM HEAVEN.

Oh, yes, ray! Totally agree with you about Dennis Quaid. He's the strongest part of FAR FROM HEAVEN. Moore is great, but her performance in THE HOURS is so superior in my book.

Swinton's performance in MICHAEL CLAYTON was riveting. It takes skill to make that scene where she is rehearsing her speech in front of the mirror work- and I mean WORK... reveal things about the character, show her motives, show her weaknesses. What a well-crafted film!

One of the biggest Oscar snubs, for me, is Reese Witherspoon in ELECTION. Well, that entire film in general. It's one of the most entertaining, most clever, most memorable satires I've ever seen.

I'll second Judy Parfitt in DOLORES CLAIBORNE, and add David Strathairn to the mix for that film.

Blasphemy alert: I'm a great admirer of the great Helen Mirren, but not particularly for her recent film work, particularly what she did in THE QUEEN, which I felt was entirely adequate but nothing even remotely special or even very interesting. I'd have given the Oscar that year to Kate Winslet for LITTLE CHILDREN.

Mirren's Jane Tennison in the PRIME SUSPECT series is one of the great performances ever captured, and if they were films she'd, well, probably not have gotten even nominated for them. The tradition of "Right Person, Wrong Film" continues with no sign of stopping.

Except where Kevin Spacey and Philip Seymour Hoffman are concerned, the least deserving Oscar winners I can think of. Well, among the least deserving, that is...

Roscoe, I have to agree with you re Mirren's performance in THE QUEEN. I guess I found it a little better than you did, but Oscar-worthy? Not really. I remember the rhetoric around her performance at the time and it was so over-the-top. Plus, the performance relied heavily on make-up that made her look like the actual Queen. I don't think it's comparable to Marion Cotillard in LA VIE EN ROSE, that performance was much more about the incredible amount of pathos and realness that she brought to the part, it's a haunting performance.

Winslet is breathtaking in LITTLE CHILDREN. I can watch that film over and over again, and I'm ALWAYS moved.

And as for Marion Cotillard, her performance in LA VIE EN ROSE is one of the best ever committed to film. Ever.

Loved LITTLE CHILDREN. Some of that ensemble is just so awful though. It's almost unbearable. It seems like all those women in the book club are in a completely different film from Winslet.

For a performance to be Oscar-worthy, in my mind it has to take me to a surprisingly high level. I didn't see La Vie En Rose yet, so I can't comment about Cotillard, but Helen Mirren in The Queen and Tilda Swinton (and Tom Wilkinson) in Michael Clayton, while quite good, didn't have that certain Je ne sais quoi elevation factor.

One of my all-time fave Oscar winners was Chris Cooper for the 2002 film, Adaptation. I didn't recall seeing him before in films and I honestly thought he was a Florida Everglades Orchid Thief they had snagged to play himself.

I could still see a bit of Helen and Tilda shining through in their roles.

I, too, am in the camp that Tilda Swinton's performance in MICHAEL CLAYTON is masterful. Frankly...MICHAEL CLAYTON was my favorite of the nommed movies that year (my favorite movie of '07, ZODIAK, was no nommed...and I'm still bitter about that).

But, if I had to pick from the list, they would be:

Best Picture: MILK

Best Director: Paul Greengrass, UNITED 93

Best Actor: Sean Penn, MILK

Best Actress: Meryl Streep, THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA

Best Supporting Actor: Jackie Earle Haley, LITTLE CHILDREN

Best Supporting Actress: Mo'nique, PRECIOUS
