All I can say is that until rights are recognized, there are some ways that partners can protect themselves. Draw up durable powers of attorney for both property and health care. Plan for the worst ahead of time. Consult an estate planning attorney and draw up wills so the intent is clear.
This may not solve all of the obstacles, and lord knows it should not be required in order to protect the sanctity of marriage between two loving adults, but it will provide you some protection under a worst case scenario. Until society catches up with reality, it needs to be done.
I cannot fathom or appreciate how you feel, and lord knows with the current administration and the Christian Right now infesting all branches of government, things may get worse before the get better. But, I can suggest how to help in the near term.
