re: The RENT movie trailer appears to be homophobic

Yes it IS too much to ask---there is a segment of the population that does not approve, if not actually revulsed by the thought of homosexuality. Winning the hearts/minds of people like that is not going to happen by bombarding them with images that they find revolting---why do you think so many states have passed amendments against gay marriage? You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar, and you have more than enough vinegar to pollute the entire U.S.

AS I said, LOOK at the trailer! We are represented!! Maybe not by two men, but the gay community is not made up of all men! How much more representation do you want?!! It's a trailer, not the whole movie for God's sakes!

Magdalene,

Your position is inherently contradictory. No, you don't make people more understanding by shaming that which you want them to be more understanding of.

I don't think anyone should submit, either---I just think that sublety sometimes is better than knocking someone over the head. Rent was a beautiful show about LOVE---all kinds of love. Get the people into the seats to SEE the show!

re: The RENT movie trailer appears to be homophobic

jrb - I assume that was directed towards me. I don't think it equals gay porn. Seeing that the trailer does show gay affection, even though it was not between 2 men, I was asking how much more affection does Art need to see in the trailer. Hence the porn comment. I do know the difference, thank you.

No, clearly you don't.

He asked for a KISS. And some of you have made the leap to sex and porn, etc.

I find that to be in extremely poor taste--and highly disappointing that gay men are the ones making this leap.

This argument is just like the Chenoweth/700 Club debate. I think most of you completely compromise your normal stance on issues because your idolatry of the performer or show is greater. You lose sense of reality.

Now, I realize that art2 has taken this WAY out of reality as well. But, let's keep ahold of our senses, shall we?

Well I do. Whether you think I do or not. He has taken this way too far and I made the porn comment to show that. Guess I was the only one who got it.

Oh, I don't know. I don't think art is all that off-base. Perhaps a little over-passionate...but truly not far off-base.

And I really am shocked by the apologists here. It makes me realize just how far we HAVEN'T come...even amongst our own community.

re: The RENT movie trailer appears to be homophobic

Wait...

There are gays in RENT?

I would never had known.

re: The RENT movie trailer appears to be homophobic

Okay, maybe I'm way off base, but isn't the trailer more insensitive than homophobic? (If you take this thread to it's illogical conclusion!) It is insensitive in that it doesn't show two men kissing, but it doesn't say anything about that particular kiss being bad...

re: The RENT movie trailer appears to be homophobic

Thank you Adam. Look, I am all for gay rights and being represented. As I have said, I have done the vigils, marches, I even wear the Matthew Sheppard band on my arm every day. I just get a bit annoyed when gay people go for some of the smallest things to pick on. This is just a movie trailer. And I agree that if there is too much male affection shown in the trailer, it can turn people off. Yes, it is sad, but it is the truth. It is America. It it Hollywood. Like it or not. And it just isn't going to change overnight. But things do need to change. I think there is enough of our community represented in the trailer. They say they have stayed true to the show which we should be very happy about. I just don't know what else to say! I am proud to be a 44 year old black gay man. Who loves the theatre. I love the Show, I love the trailer and I look forward to the movie! I am happy and out to everyone around me and I don't need my lifestyle to be as prominent as Art would like it to be in a trailer to be happy or validated. We may not be where we want to be as a gay community, but we've come a long way baby! Not too many years back, you would not have even seen what we are seeing in this trailer. So be happy that we have come this far! Don't push it (Look what happened with gay marriage) but still look to the future. And I am not saying to just be satisfied with where we are now. It is going to take time. It is. And not just 525,600 minutes.

Wow

'Don't push it'

That is, singlehandedly, the worst bit of advice I've ever seen on this site.

Wow

OK...when I say don't push it, I mean do it at the right time. With this administraion in office, it was not the right time to push gay marriage. This is not an easy subject to discuss in a thread. And, honey, I don't remember gay people having to sit in the back of the bus. Let's not go there.

Wow

No, but gay people have faced massive discrimination in this country, so don't even try to belittle it, nor negate the expression.

Wow

I am not belittling it at all. And I think anyone would know that from my past few posts. As I said, it is hard to discuss here. My friends, black, white, straight and gay have had this discussion. Some of my friends equate it to discrimination against blacks others don't. But we have been straying away from the subject. "I hate the bus...I want my own car" I love the trailer :) Peace

Wow

Argh!

The rent trailer represents everyone! Watch it and you'd see that, what the hell else to you want? The whole movie to be given in the trailer!? I swear we see Maureen and Joanne kiss and we see Angel and Collins together millions of times. So what is the problem, more men to men affection? As 'uncageg' rent some porn! Just because the gay relationship in RENT wasn't represented as you wanted it to be there is no need to go over the top like some have.

Wow

I posted something rather nasty before...but I think it applies here.

Wow

Who may I ask, in your opinion, are the children in this case?

Wow

Though I'd hardly call 44 old, I'm afraid I can no longer put you in the 'child' category.
