The RENT trailer sends out a message that, while heterosexuality is to be celebrated and applauded with loving close-ups, displays of gay male affection (including kissing) are something that are better left in the closet. It's a message of shame courtesy of the marketing men, a message that plays right into the hands of both the religious right and the libido liberals.

You need to understand that the religious right and the libido left converge on one point: that displays of gay male affection aren't acceptable or celebration-worthy. The hypocrites in all this are the libido left because they profess support for gay rights while recoiling from the notion of gay male affection. Rarely do they have a problem with displays of female-female affection, of course.
As for what one poster said earlier about gay porn, I'm glad you brought them up on that. If a simple kiss between two men is "gay porn" then God help us. Sometimes I think we have more to fear from the libido left than from the religious right.

It will be interesting to see whether the movie actually reflects the trailer in its abandonment of the gay male relationship and associated affection. If it does then direct responsibility must lie with Chris Columbus and Columbia Pictures. If the gay male affection is depicted fairly and with the same intimacy as the straight affection then I will be the first to congratulate it.
Another thing: just be aware of the tricks that film-makers use to downplay displays of gay male affection. These include filming from a distance so that there's some doubt as to the sex of the people involved, the use of behind-the-head shots so that you can't actually see the lips coming into contact during a kiss.... These are things that need to be considered when judging whether a film-maker has applied different standards. I'll be interested to see what Chris Columbus has actually done here.

I'm tired ofthis thread, really, but i have to say one more thing:

I think the main point that is being missed here (mostly by art2) is that it's JUST A TEASER TRAILER. That's it! Not even a full version of a tiny version of the movie. And on the same hand, it's a movie! A comparative tiny fart in the massive, bubbling hot tub of humanity! This trailer will not singlehandedly erase all strides made by the gay community.

As for the gay male kiss in particular, it's important if it is treated differently from other types of kisses (eg male/female, female/female). If the male/male kiss is the only type of kiss that isn't shown then it's a case of "we won't go there" on the part of the promoters. This appears to be the case for the RENT trailer.

It is my opinon now that art is just trying to get under people's skin or is a hardcore gay activist. Actually I don't think he really cares whether two men are kissing in the trailer or not. (See Wax's excellent post that tells you about kissing in the show.) If he has indeed seen the show, he would know about kissing in the show, as most, if not all, of us do here. And he would know that it really is not an issue. I think he meant to spark this debate just to see where it would go. And we fell for it. 10 pages worth.
