I honestly can't believe that people are hating the movie this much. I saw it Friday night and thought it was brilliant. It trails very closely behind the first as my favorite.
I will say that Kirsten Dunst should not sing anymore, and that the bar dance was annoying, but those parts were hilarious (especially the part on the pay phone with the cookies). I loved the Emo-Spidey.
I thought Topher Grace was fantastic. I was a little wary of him, but he played it well, especially when he turned into Venom. I didn't feel the hatred for Peter as much as I should have, as spiderdj said as well.
But I loved it, and the last fight scene was awesome, and I was really sad that Harry's pretty face got messed up.
I want to see this again ASAP.
I saw it and loved it!
I noticed that Topher Grace and Tobey McGuire have a lot of similarities: the same nerdy look, big eyes, face, even at one point, hair. Now my friend was telling me this was on purpose because of parallels between Venom and Spiderman (I am not familiar with the comic). I was just wondering if Topher Grace was ever considered/in the running for Spiderman.

I loved it! The action sequences were really thrilling, and I was extremely excited to finally be seeing Venom in one of the movies.
*SPOILERS*
I felt that Sandman, though one of my favorite Spider-Man villians, didn't seem to fit THAT well into the movie, but I guess it would further provoke Peter to use the black suit and be all bad-ass.
I never really liked the romantic scenes in any of the Spider-Man movies, and my mind didn't really change for this one, but I, and the rest of the people in the theater gasped when Peter hit Mary Jane, and how Peter reacted, just that whole moment was PRICELESS.
I LOVED the Stan Lee cameo.
I'm so glad Harry was involved. That scenes when he and Spidey were fighting together, that was great, and I was so sad that he died, but I'm glad he died proving that he was a good guy.
I didn't feel that the movie was too campy. I actually thought it blended humor and campiness well with the action, Spider-man is the kind of superhero that comes with a bit of campiness, but those moments, to me, helped move along the movie for the most part. Like when Peter was dancing in the street, that was so stupid and funny, but it gave you a clear picture on what he has become.
Venom was AWESOME! I loved every scene with Venom, though they DID make some changes I was a little sad of, but the Spidey and Venom fight scenes were great.
So, in general, I probably liked the first one more, but this is a very close second for me. I'm probably gonna see it again.
YAY, more people who liked it.
Torch--It is not just that the symbiote amplified aggression . . . it completely changes everything about you. Peter is, always have been, very clean cut with the hair parted and dressed very conservatively, etc. When the symbiote started taking over, it make him go the complete opposite direction. Never would Peter walk down the street like that, or dance in a jazz club, or even do his hair like that. Those things go COMPLETELY against his character.
It may seem silly to some, but that is how it happens.
Spider-Man 3 has already broken the record for the biggest box office take for a weekend with $148 million and they haven't even counted today's intake with that.

woah...!
Eh, I don't know. A lot of people (including myself) were disappointed in the second one, so we shall see.
i think that the pirates opening weekend will be comparable, but these are really high numbers to beat...
I think Shrek 3 has more potential to break Spiderman's new records. Shrek 2 was a massive hit, the third highest grossing movie of all time.
No match for the second one (for my money, the best super hero movie ever), but an improvement from the first.
I actually liked it. I don't think the two villains were as effective as they could have been, but the internal conflicts between the main characters more than held my interest. Dunst and Franco were excellent, and found wonderful shades to their roles.
Never really felt one way or the other about Maguire, but I thought he was good in this one. His transformation halfway through the film was both funny and sad.
Two scenes absolutely blew me away: the "birth of Sandman" and the climax at the construction site. Stunning. The technical values of this film are Oscar-worthy.
How did you feel about the bitch slap?
Glad you liked it.

"Now my friend was telling me this was on purpose because of parallels between Venom and Spiderman"
I HIGHLY doubt that. "
Actually, what Sam Raimi wanted was to have Brock be the dark doppleganger of Parker which is why Topher Grace got the part.
I loved Topher as Venom and Thomas as Sandman. Sandman to me felt like Frankenstein or King Kong in the fact that he doesn't mean to do evil, but that he just does it.
Tobey Maguire is to Spidermand like Michael Keaton and Christian Bale are to Batman, all of them were absolutetly right for the roles and Maguire gave another great performance in this movie.
I'm still kinda up in the air about the movie. Part of me really loved it especially Venom's moments and part of me was just like eh, about it, but I did enjoy it and thought it was good.
I also have to say that Bruce Campbell's cameo in this movie was the best one out of all three movies. I was cracking up the entire time.
I saw the movie today and thought it was good.
(SPOILERS FOLLOWING)
I loved the visuals in the movie, especially the way the transformation of Sandman and the birth of Venom were portrayed. The New Goblin looked fantastic, and I liked how Harry was redeemed at the end. There were great performances all around and the action sequences were great.
That being said, there are some things I didn't like about it. One of the things that really irked me was little amount of time the movie spent on Venom. I LOVED the way Venom looked in the movie. I wish that we could have seen more of him! When I think about it, he only appeared in like the last 30 minutes of the movie. I really wish they had made Venom the main villian instead of Sandman.
The scene where Peter is dancing down the street after he is taken over by the symbiote just seemed really random and didn't seem to fit with the pace of the movie. Granted it was funny (I laughed my butt off) but it was really out of place.
Same thing goes for the scene where Peter dances in the jazz club. It just seemed to come outta nowhere.
The scene on the bridge in the park was just WAY too over-the-top-dramatic for me. And it didn't seem to make sense. Since MJ had only ended things with Peter because Harry forced her, wouldn't she just have told him, either then and there or later on , that she was being put up to it?
There were also some problems with the script. The biggest one I noticed was Sandman's sudden 180 at the end. About 10-15 minutes before, he had been trying to beat the crap out of Spiderman. Now he says that he didn't really mean for any of this to happen, and is asking Spiderman to understand what he did? It just seemed like a really quick change of heart to me.
But I still thought it was a good movie. It just had a lot of flaws that kept it from being a great movie.

Really? I thought it was the most "real" emotional moment in the entire trilogy. A lot of Mary Jane and Peter moments felt way too scripted and soap operish. The "Bridge" scene felt real to me. Also, she didn't tell him on the bridge because Harry told her that he was going to kill Peter if she didn't do it. And that threat was there until M.J. realized that Harry turned to the good side. But, Peter made a complete ass of himself to M.J. that she probably didn't think he deserved to know the truth. But, it seems at the end when they dance, you know everything is going to be fine.
Oh, and I agree about Venom.

Can anyone tell me about the uncontrollable crane? They seem to forget about it after he saves Gwen. Like, okay his job is done after he saved her, he is just gonna let the crane swing now? I laughed thinking about it a little bit.

oh yeah! I forgot about that
I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it. I think it had a lot of plot problems. And when I stop caring about the characters and the stakes, I can't enjoy fight sequences--it just becomes a big frenetic blur.
But I do think the film is better than some of the word of mouth the reviews have given it.

I still don't feel like they gave us enough reason to despise Eddie and make him villianous. He was corrupted by the suit just like Peter was and I didn't really have contempt for him as much as I did pity. And since when does Eddie ever die in the Spiderman canon? I think that Gwen Stacy should die in the next one if they use her, which they should. She was pretty much a tool in this one and I didn't like that she only served one purpose. Any thoughts?
Eddie DOES die in the comics. He has terminal cancer before the symbiote attatches to him, and the symbiote kind of puts it in remission . . . but it eventually comes back and he dies from it. But, there was another Venom after him.
As of right now, SPIDER-MAN 3 has made $375 million worldwide. Wow . . . and that is just one weekend here and a week in other places. It has already recouped it's investment, plus $117 million more in profit.
Eh.
I thought it was eh. I came out of it kinda half-asleep. I saw a 6:30 showing and by 8:00 I started looking at the clock every 10 minutes. I didn't dislike it--there were some good parts--but I didn't LOVE it either. It was all right.

The Most Expensive Movie Ever Made
I too came out of the theater feeling eh. I had a good time, But it coulda been a lot better. I think I went for the 300 mil visual effects though.
The Story needed SERIOUS work. For it to be as long as it was (it felt like it was never gonna end at times), I expected MUCH more.
The main reason I went to see it (alongside the afore mentioned effects) was b/c of Venom, who is one of my FAVORITE villains, and was disappointed with the small amount of time devoted to him. There was not much development to him at all! I was soo upset about that. (And I must say that found it odd that he goes to the church, all repentant-like, humbly asking God... to Kill Peter, but that could just be me.) Thomas Haden Church was kinda wasted. I love him and just found myself disappointed in how they used him. A PLUS though: as someone mentioned, the actual visual sequences of how they become Venom and Sandman were HOT! (I see where the 300 mil was spent, b/c it wasnt on story development).
I was questioning the crane too. I was like "um, did he just forget about that huge crane? what about the other people who might end up hanging 60 stories above ground b/c this thing is STILL swinging around like no tomorrow?"
Peter "struttin his stuff" was the cheesiest thing I have ever seen.
And the ENDING! what the hell! It was sooo corny. Yes, Sandman wasn't really a "bad guy", but to actually have him stand there and have an emotional moment with Spidey? Whoa! I did like Harry redeeming himself though, AND it worked b/c it was properly developed.
Overall: Great effects & visuals, poor story
