re: The Student Board has no life anymore! What is everyone up to?!

Me neither. If all works out well, I'll go to college and then live in Manhattan, where you can't really have a car. Plus, if I take the subway everywhere, I will never get into a car accident my clumsiness will bring me. However, in the state of Illinois, you have to take Driver's Ed. as a credit to graduate high school. I'm not sure if it's a requirement in other states, but neither my sister nor myself really want to drive (she wants to live in NYC, too).

And because this thread is pretty much just a random thoughts thread, I have to ask, is it okay if I start a thread on my birthday (the 14th) in celebration of my birthday? If not, can somebody start a thread congratulating my 13th birthday?

Hooblah... so I am finally getting around to making videos of all of the songs I am singing. Now that I have the Flip video camera, suckas. It's pretty bomb. I'm not gonna lie.

Oooh, what songs are you singing?

BroadwayKing09, I was just asking because in the "off-topic" board, somebody recently started a thread for another poster's birthday, and I just like to brag about how young I am on this board, lol.

Anyway, I saw Harry Potter in iMax today (3rd time seeing the movie) and it was awesome! Throughout the entire movie, I was preparing for the part where the inferi grabs Harry's hand in the cave because I jumped the previous times I saw it. Luckily, I didn't jump this time! Okay, so I rented the movie version of "Les Mis" from Blockbuster yesterday, so I think I'm gonna go watch that now.

Kaleighkayy... that is completely inappropriate. How dare you say something like that here? Who do you think you are?

BroadwayKing, I agree it was completely awesome. I have been obsessed with Harry Potter for the last four years. The 3D was really good, and if you're near an iMax, I would definitely recommend it.

Okay, so I didn't watch Les Mis last night, but I will try to watch it tonight. Last night my mom took my sister to see a Patti Lupone concert. She didn't take me because she took me to see a production of Spelling Bee about a month ago. Well, she brought me a signed program. I got really excited because it was my first item signed by anybody on Broadway.

BTW, did anybody ever read the book Tuesdays with Morrie? I had to read it this summer and I hated it. It was boring and depressing. I am sick of hearing about how much people love that book. I'm 30 pages into the second book I have to read (all books are about 170 pages), and it is also really boring. It's called Invitation to the Game. Don't read it. The third and final book we have to read is called Ties that Bind, Ties that Break. It's about a person in China who doesn't want her feet bound. I don't get why they have to choose depressing books. The big problem with Tuesdays with Morrie was that the whole book, Morrie was saying "I'm dying", and it ends up with him dying. It could have ended a bit earlier when we think he's about to die but he manages another few days. In Rent, you know Mimi is going to die somewhat soon because of HIV, but it ends with her about to die and she lives on and it has a big message about hope. The book could have gone somewhere with hope for Morrie's disease, but it just ended with his death. I want to rip out the last chapter from the book. Not like that would fix the rest of it.

Consider yourselves lucky. I had to read Their Eyes Were Watching God which was 200 pages but actually really good, and Great American Short Stories which is 600 pages of stories with messages that are so hidden beneath the "literature" that the actually stories are indecipherable. Hooray for summer reading. . . NOT!

Yeah, I hate summer reading. My sister (and incoming sophmore in high school) has to read the Oddyssey (spelling?) and the Alcheimist (again, spelling?). At the end of the school year this year, we did a project in groups of 3 (it was an advanced class, so there weren't slackers who gave the work to the smartest person in the group) and we had a choice of The Hobbit or Lord of the Flies. My group was the only group that chose The Hobbit because everybody wanted to read the shorter book. I liked the Hobbit, and everybody hated the Lord of the Flies. The Hobbit was probably the best book I was forced to read, and I guess I wasn't forced to read it. In the same class, we were reading a book called The Ear, the Eye, and the Arm, which I hated, and we had to journal our thoughts about each chapter, in groups of 3 chapters. There was no test (this teacher only gave 3 or 4 tests), and she decided not to have us journal the last three chapters. She told us that there is no way she could physically force us to finish the book, and we wouldn't be assessed on the end, so we didn't have to finish it. At least 1/4 of the class finished the book.

So, what other terrible books were you forced to read in school? In fourth grade, I had to read some book called "Esperanza Rising" about a girl moving from Mexico to California, and it was pretty depressing and boring. In sixth grade, we had to read "A Wrinkle in Time" and there were so many scientific inaccuracies. In seventh grade, we had to read "The Outsiders", and it was really bad. If you took away the songs, love story, and all female characters from the "West Side Story" movie, you pretty much get The Outsiders. My dad kept telling me that I should like it because it was one of his favorite movies in college. In sixth grade, we also had to read some book (I don't remember the title) about some girl who found a trail in her backyard, had a crush on somebody 3 years older than her that her sister who was 3 years older than her also liked, and got mad when other people found the trail because it was "her" trail because she found it first. This coming year, in reading, we will do a banned books unit where we read a book that some people have tried to ban and then write a paper on whether or not we think it should be banned. We will also read a Shakespeare play (merchant of Venice) and see a production of it at Navy Pier's Shakespeare theater, which won the Tony for regional theater in 2008. It doesn't seem like it will be as bad as this year.

Summer before my sophomore year of high school I had to read catch 22...and I didn't read it until the day before school started so I hated it even more. I also hated The Scarlet Letter. I loved Their Eyes Were Watching God and The Great Gatsby though.

Yeah, I'm proud of myself for being able to enjoy it. Even just a few months ago, I probably wouldn't have been able to sit through the whole movie. I'm just wondering why the movie ended with Javert's suicide. I'm not sure how the book ended, but I believed the musical ended with Valjean's death. What annoyed me was that Jean Valjean was walking away from the river with a smile on his face. Yes, it is good that he is free, but he was just happily walking away from a dramatic suicide. He should show some sympathy to the person who set him free. I was also mad that Gavroche was pretty much only in it for his death. You don't just keep a character so he can die. I feel like flying to London to see the show right now. If only I wasn't an eighth grade student living near Chicago.
