re: The Student Board has no life anymore! What is everyone up to?!

Hi guys:)

I'm new here, kinda, and I figured I would introduce myself. I'm Luke, and I'm about to start school at Marymount Manhattan College, and I'm in the BFA program there. I currently live in a po-dunk, little town in Georgia that has only 8 traffic lights. Haha.

I love this place, and I've been ghosting the site for a while (because I couldnt remember my password) but now I'm back! Once I get moved in up in NYC, I hope to meet some of you at shows, SD's and such.

Thanks for all the info guys:)

Okay, well I only read the first and last pages of this thread because I didn't feel like reading another two pages, so anyway, I'll just introduce myself.

I'm Danny, and I'm going into eighth grade this fall (so much younger than everybody on these boards... but at least I'm not fifty years older!). I live in the Northwestern Chicago suburbs. I will be going to a high school with a very good and ambitious performing arts program. This past year, they did Company in the fall, Briar Rose: the Tale of Sleeping Beauty around November, Everything I Ever Needed to Know I Learned in Kindergarten in January/February, and Once on this Island in the spring. They took Company to competition at it did very well, so... yeah, I'm kind of excited to do shows in high school. I really want them to choose The Drowsy Chaperone my senior year because I would make an AWESOME Man in Chair, probably like many other people on this board.

I don't really know how to end this post, so...yeah.

Welcome to BWW AwesomeDanny! You're VERY lucky to go to a performing arts HS. My performing arts HS prepared me very well for college, it's an amazing opportunity!

I'm in my last week at my internship :[ sad. But I get to go back to Boston and start rehearsals yay!!!!

"You're VERY lucky to go to a performing arts HS."

Well, it's not specifically a performing arts high school, it's just a high school with a good performing arts program, but thanks anyway. The reason I said I want to play Man in Chair in my senior year is actually because I kind of have trouble singing with my deep, one and one-half octave range, and that's a non-singing part that fits me. I'm pretty sure that a good reason they chose Company was because of they already knew who they were going to cast as Bobby, and I think by my senior year, the director will know that I am a nerdy theater geek, which is perfect for the part. I'll get really mad if they do it, like, my freshman year when I probably won't get the lead... and probably won't get cast that year.

"I'm glad that you're not 50 years older than all of us, Awesomedanny."

So am I re: The Student Board has no life anymore! What is everyone up to?! You know, what annoys me about my age is that the only contests that I can enter are, like, radio disney contests to meet people like selena gomez. Sometimes, I wish that I was 21 just so I can enter the two official Broadway-related contests that happen each year. Like last year, with the big contest for closing night of Rent where you made a video, my sister and I really wanted to make a video, but we weren't old enough, and my mom didn't feel a compulsive need to see the show on closing night because she and my sister saw the tour (bought tickets a week before I saw and loved the movie :-[ ) in February and we were planning on seeing the Broadway filming. You probably didn't care about that, but I can just keep going when nobody can stop me from typing.

P.S. I think I'm going to make most of my posts on this board in the "Student" section because everybody seems a lot nicer here.

re: The Student Board has no life anymore! What is everyone up to?!

Well to be honest with you, 21 isn't even old enough to do a lot of things. I'll be 21 when I graduate college and with the exception of shows like Spring Awakening, Billy Elliot and Marry Poppins, leads on Broadway/in professional theatre are in their late twenties/early thirties.

What matters right now is the training.

re: The Student Board has no life anymore! What is everyone up to?!

I actually have no Idea what I'm gonna do once I'm old enough to do legitimate stuff. haha. I'm having so much fun in the training aspect that I don't know if I'll ever really want to stop. Of course, I'll keep training for the rest of my life as long as I can afford it. But I find that the environments that I am in for training purposes are often more rewarding than ones for actual shows. I do love being in shows and most everything that goes along with it, but I feel so blessed to have the resources to get the type of training that I am. I can't wait for things to move on and for me to go into the real world, but I am also enjoying the time I have to grow as a performer. Hopefully I will always continue to grow.

Wow.. that was a burst of enthusiasm for vegas that I rarely feel. Sorry for the spastic-ness of this post. Haha.

re: The Student Board has no life anymore! What is everyone up to?!

Yeah, well I meant when I said that I wish that I was older meant that if I didn't live in New York, I would have the freedom (if I could afford it) to fly to New York by myself, get a cheap hotel, and wake up at 5 A.M. to do rush for Next to Normal.

I know that the only show that casts people in their early twenties as leads is Rent. You know, I would probably be living a dream being a swing in a Broadway show that I hate... I would even love to be an intern who just sweeps the floors. If it's a job on Broadway, I'll take it. Unless it's a limited engagement, because I don't want to have a job for just a few months and then go job-hunting again.

I know what you mean by loving the training classes and wanting to keep doing them. If I can't do anything related to Broadway, I would like to learn what it takes to go to broadway. In a dance class I recently took about Tony-winning choreographers, we learned the actually B'way choreography for the beginning of "I Hope I Get It" from A Chorus Line. I loved the feeling of learning what so many people had been taught for the roles in it's 15 year run and 2 year revival. It made me feel like I was a part of Broadway, which is a great feeling. Of course, I can't even imagine what it would feel like to mix that feeling with performing on an actual Broadway stage, telling an audience a story that they can't find another professional production of, and possibly giving such a powerful and emotional performance it makes people start to cry. That feeling would be amazing.

BTW, is it bad that I want to make people cry?

re: The Student Board has no life anymore! What is everyone up to?!

I don't think its bad to want to make people cry. Since crying is the result of such an extreme emotional reaction, whether it be sadness of laughter, to make an audience cry is to me a successful performance. It's cathartic. hah. Although you could get that dreaded stubborn audience. I remember during As You Like It when we did a performance for the high schools those kids were very "ugh..shakespeare" and pretty much tuned out. But since we broke the 4th wall in the show we got our revenge on them. :)

re: The Student Board has no life anymore! What is everyone up to?!

Ha ha, that sounds fun. In a production for Joseph I worked a spot on, there was a camp with older kids that came who walked into the theater and said "This is gay" and "Why do we have to watch this stupid play?". Those comments were my two pet peeves: offensive sexism and generalizing theater as a light, fluffy, boring time that's called a play whether or not there is signing and dialogue, or in the case of Joseph, just singing. On the headsets, before the show, we started talking about how annoying those kinds of people are, and how they're going to end up homeless begging on the street because they don't want to work at the one place that will accept them: a fast food restaurant paying minimum wage. (no offense to anybody making minimum wage, but the point I'm trying to make is that it's impossible for them to make anything more than that, while it's probably possible for you to make more than that.

re: The Student Board has no life anymore! What is everyone up to?!

Can we just talk about the fact that JESSICA BIEL is in Guys and Dolls.

?!?!?!?!?!?!

Why. Just...why.

On a happier note, as I drink coffee out of my sexy Gypsy mug, I think one of the most satisfying things about performing is knowing you inspired 10 kids to start performing.

When I was in Thoroughly Modern Millie and in Little Women, we did shows for schools with underprivileged kids. When we came out to say hi in costume, they all asked me to sign their notebooks and asked how they can be on Broadway too. hahah

Then during Thoroughly Modern Millie, 5 little girls who I didn't know sent me flowers and wrote little notes about how they want to be actresses.

I love it. It makes me cry. hahah

re: The Student Board has no life anymore! What is everyone up to?!

Greetings upon! Honestly, this is the one board on BWW where I don't feel the need to be psychotically sarcastic all the time because we all seem to be in the same boat.

I'm not really the theatre geek I once was and am not really pursuing an acting career anymore. But I am still fascinated by it and will certainly pursue acting as a hobby. I'm a film student currently and mainly would consider myself a writer, comics artist, and filmmaker who is also taking secret voice lessons behind everyone's backs. (I still haven't mastered that whole "Singing for people...thing...")

I've always been fascinated with musical theatre but I think I would like to use it as a springboard for other art. Creating pieces that are musical in some way and that involve lots of singing. Much like The Decemberists use their love of musical theatre to create works like The Hazards of Love.

Anyway...

Good Lord, what is happening to the Broadway? Haha.

Drama, I just thought you should know that you and Joey in Millie are what made me want to do musical theatre. :)

re: The Student Board has no life anymore! What is everyone up to?!

I hate hearing about LVA shows where they cast a dance major ensemble. When I did Beauty and the Beast my sophomore year (I can't believe that was over four years ago), only two of us dance majors got cast... because we can SING. Triple threats ftw! I miss LVA sometimes, but I'm kind of over it now. I REALLY recommend doing community theatre shows if you can - especially if you're the kind of person who mostly gets cast in ensemble stuff. LVA ensembles are so big that you don't really get the experience of what it's like being in like every second of a show, the way you are in a show with a smaller ensemble. For instance, in LVA's Joseph (which I wasn't in), they had an ensemble AND brothers and wives. In the production of Joseph I did my senior year (with Signature), the ensemble was the brothers and wives, and we were onstage A LOT. It's so much more fun. Not that I don't have some fabulous memories of lounging around backstage at LVA, but I would rather be onstage.

Also can't wait to get back to school. We have a new ballet teacher this year... love my old ballet teacher so much, but she's not the greatest teacher in the world, and this new guy is supposed to be awesome. Also, we're doing a Balanchine piece as one of our ballet rep pieces. So excited! Not to mention that I have my audition for Rent (and A Streetcar Named Desire and some other play) the first day back. For which I am scared crapless, but shouldn't be because I don't suck.

Spent the day in NYC on Sunday with one of my best friends from school... it was rainy and gross for most of the day, but other than my flip-flops shrinking on my feet from all the wet, it was great. We saw the TAKE Dance Company, and they did a piece that Take originally set on my dance company at school. It was really weird seeing other people, i.e. professional dancers, doing my part. Great show though. Also, the Magnolia Bakery is a win. Get the banana pudding... even if you don't like bananas.
The former lilprima2b... I can't figure out how to get my password emailed to me, so here we go.

re: The Student Board has no life anymore! What is everyone up to?!

I hear you. Luckily, in Sweeney Todd, the idea was that the ensemble was onstage the entire time so my first LVA experience involved being engaged in a show for a full 2 and a half hours and not chillin with the homies backstage. More recent shows have not given me the same opportunity. We just finished You Can't Take It With You at the end of the year and I literally came on stage and did my 10 minute scene and then left until curtain call. It wasn't actually the worst, because I had a lot less to worry about and, but still had a significant roll, but I much prefer having the sort of Experience that Sweeney provided me with.

I planned to audition for West Side Story with Super Summer this year, But rehearsals for a compilation show for opening the State Thespian festival conflicted with BOTH of the auditions. My luck is staggering.

This board excites me for college like no other.

re: The Student Board has no life anymore! What is everyone up to?!

Thats what i really like about certain shows where you get to be onstage throughout mostly the whole show. In The Wiz last year i was on stage about four times. They were just the dance numbers though. Plus i kinda think the show was alittle over cast. Their were about 30 something girls and only about 15 guys. It was kinda boring hanging back stage. Im looking forward to West Side Story this year because at least if i get cast theres more onstage time. So that should be cool.
