re: The Student Board has no life anymore! What is everyone up to?!

I've done summerstock theatre, but primarily backstage. But to give you a basic idea of what it is (and this mostly depends on what theatre hires you, but this just from what I know):
Most summerstock theatres hire actors at NETC, SETC, Straw Hat, StageSource, etc. Others don't, but most do (like I said, it depends on the theatre). You usually will be cast for the entire season (which typically runs from mid-May to October, or in some cases June through August or May through September). At the theatre where I worked, I saw most actors again at least two or three times during the season. Once hired, you have about two weeks to rehearse (give or take). Usually productions are anywhere from two to five week runs. Almost all summerstock theatres that I know of provide housing for the actors and crew.

Hope that helps a little. re: The Student Board has no life anymore! What is everyone up to?!

AwsomeDanny, liked the book "Esperanza Rising" when I was in 6th grade it was sad but a good book. I think they made a play about it in Chicago. "A Wrinkle in Time" was a good book too.
I'm guessing you don't like reading books.

*Edit* Oops they both start with a "T"

Thanks Perfectly Marvelous. Also, your avatar is amazing.

Wizard2joe, I've never heard of this wrinkle in town book. Is it about old people living in a village?

Summer Stock lesson 101:

NETC/SETC (North East Theatre Conference/South East Theatre Conference): You have to be at least 18. You have to fill out a form online, print a small version of your headshot in B&W, send in $45.00, send in the form late September or you won't get a slot (Deadline is Feb or March). There are 3 days of auditions, they will either assign you a time and day, tell you when to come as a stand-by or tell you that you didn't get an audition at all. You sing 16 bars of a song and do a monologue. There are various amounts of theatre companies watching you ranging from 10-40.

Strawhats: It's a similar process, but in New York City. Send in your form by the deadline, wait to see if you have an audition, and I believe you have to be 18 or 18 by the time you audition.

Those are the main 3, but there are HUNDREDS of companies in each state that do summer stock. Not in Las Vegas, but if you do your research you'll find links to their audition requirements/dates etc. or you can call.

Any other questions on Summer stock PM me.

dramadude2, A Wrinkle in Time is a book from the sixties about these three people who travel through different dimensions. It's really weird. Because of when it was written, the scientific basis is flawed. I didn't like the book because I thought it was too weird.

Everybody on the board pretty much seems anxious for school to start again. Am I the only one who's not ready? Once my homework load starts building up, some days I might not have any time to do anything but homework. Then I won't be able to post here until the weekends, or even check the Broadway news. And I'll have to wake up at seven, which, for me, means going to bed at nine. Not to mention the torturous gym class. This year, I'll have the gym teacher who gave an example in health class of seduction between her and a student, and the gym teacher who looked down a girl's shirt a couple years ago. Oh, and early on this year, a student teacher for gym decided to encourage everybody to try their best, he told us if we didn't run the mile in under 10 minutes, we would get an F for the day. I tried my best and got twelve minutes flat and because I was pushing myself too hard, I had an asthma attack. I went to the nurse and later found out that he only did that to make sure the slower runners were actually trying. Oh, and even though our gym uniforms have our full names clearly written on them, the gym teachers always just call my twin and I by our last name because they're too lazy to read. I just hate that class.

Oh, and a different gym teacher I had this year, who I also had for health class, got mad when we told him his mistakes in the question of the day in health. For example, he spelled "etc." "ect.". I said "Mr. Zapatka, I think you meant 'etc.', because it is et cetera. "ECT" stand for Electroconvulsive Therapy". He got really mad when everybody agreed and said, "No, it's ectetera." He claimed to have looked it up the next day and that he was right. On another occasion when we had to correct his grammar for the question to make sense, he said to my twin, who pointed it out first, as the teacher was passing out tests, "You know, you don't have to point out in front of everybody all of my mistakes." he hands him his test and says "You didn't score perfectly on this test either. You may have done well, but you didn't do perfectly." He said that in front of the whole class. With another test, he put off grading it one night, telling us that he had to watch the college basketball game that was on TV. I can't wait until I don't have to deal with idiotic teachers.

Awsomedanny
You can probably report these teachers of yours. Or even better voice it on end of year evaluations if you have those. My class did that for one of our professors last semester and needless to say she is not teaching that class anymore.

Thanks dramatothemax!

Haha. I know about A Wrinkle in Time, Danny. I was joking with wizard2joe because he accidently wrote A Wrinkle in TOWN.

I know what you mean about sensitive teachers. I've had my fair share.

Yeah, I hate those kinds of teachers. I can't believe I forgot to mention my fifth grade teacher who didn't even cover all of the points in science she was supposed to teach us because she spent way too much time on one unit and tried to teach a whole unit in one week. We were done learning everything in all of the other subjects. She only needed to cover nine simple points. She only covered two.

Oh, and we have complained to the principles what the teachers have done, but the principles have to take the side of the teachers. Oh, and when my sister was in third grade, there was this teacher she had who believed that if people naturally didn't get along, they should be forced to become friends. One girl was pretty mean to her for no apparent reason, so my mom asked if they couldn't sit next to each other, like they were forced to in the previous two seating arrangements. The teacher then asked her, in front of the whole class, if she had a problem sitting next to the girl. Because the person was right next to her, she said no, so they had to sit next to each other for the next month. The teacher was so annoying.

re: The Student Board has no life anymore! What is everyone up to?!

Hi,
I'm new to this site too.
I'm starting Adelphi University in about a week as a theater/acting major. I'm from North Carolina, and I'm so psyched about moving to New York. I'm scared though, because I just started doing theater at the beginning of my senior year in high school, so I don't have much experience...don't know if I'm making the biggest mistake of my life or not. I just love performing, and this year in theater's been the best thrill of my life.
The only theater I've gotten to do this summer is a children's Shakespeare camp ( I was the female version of Prospera in The Tempest)
But, my mom finally broke down and let me take voice lessons, which have been great.
Summerstock, I'm dying to do. And seeing as many broadway shows as possible, too.

So school starts in two days..boo. re: The Student Board has no life anymore! What is everyone up to?!
"You have two kinds of shows on Broadway – revivals and the same kind of musicals over and over again, all spectacles. You get your tickets for The Lion King a year in advance, and essentially a family... pass on to their children the idea that that's what the theater is – a spectacular musical you see once a year, a stage version of a movie. It has nothing to do with theater at all. It has to do with seeing what is familiar.... I don't think the theatre will die per se, but it's never going to be what it was.... It's a tourist attraction." Stephen Sondheim

re: The Student Board has no life anymore! What is everyone up to?!

For me, this year, I got to choose eight electives from a list to be put into four of them. I will be in:
1st quarter: Drawing and Painting
2nd quarter: Industrial Technology Lab
3rd quarter: Introduction to Improv
4th quarter: That's Entertainment

The names are pretty much self-explanatory, except "That's Entertainment" is a class where we just watch movie-musicals, fill out worksheets, I get to pretty much teach the teacher about what's happening on Broadway right now. So, yeah, I'm pretty content with this.

re: The Student Board has no life anymore! What is everyone up to?!

What exactly is Office Aide?

So, I just watched part of The Light in the Piazza on youtube, but the person didn't upload videos past the part where Clara is lost and has her breakdown. I'm mad that the rest wasn't uploaded because what I was able to see was really good. I read the synopsis on a website because I couldn't stand not being able to find out what happens. A really good regional theater near me is performing it, and I want to see it, but I just saw a different show there with my mom, who probably doesn't want to spend two $50 tickets to see another show. Anyway, I can't believe I wasn't really interested in it before.
