"what did Barbie do to deserve a place on the worst Americans list?"
Feminists hate her because she is beautiful.
ETA: oh, I thought you meant the doll.
Okay, I was upset to see Margaret Sanger there but I guess Goth explained what that could POSSIBLY mean. But gloria Steinem is on one of those lists. Why?
And goth, did you really just say that feminists hate Barbie dolls becuase they're beautiful? I take it back, your logic about Sanger is nonexistent.

It's not my logic. And feminists have had a problem with Barbie because her breasts are out of proportion to the rest of her body and they are afraid some little girl will get a complex.
Why is it just the Rosenbergs? Why not Morton Sobell who was also indicted with them? Or David Greenglass who lied on the stand about the extent of his sister's involvement just to save his ass? The only evidence against Ethel was his testimony, and he admits that it was all lies.
Oh well.
They're bad because they were Commies, Mandi! Don't you fear the Red Menace?
And Sanger is on there because she espoused abortion rights, not because of some alleged racism. She once gave a speech to a women's auxiliary KK group, from Wiki:
"Sanger even gave a lecture on birth control to the women's auxiliary of the Ku Klux Klan in Silver Lake, New Jersey, a group she found so ignorant she had to use only "the most elementary terms, as though I were trying to make children understand."[4]"

I am so not even going to touch this one. Actually yes, I am. But seriously, since when is "beautiful" equated with breasts being out of proportion? I mean it makes sense to say they hate her because her body is distorted, but not bc shes beautiful...

Perhaps "beautiful" is the wrong word. The feminists were trying to say that young girls would have self-esteem issues because they saw Barbie as having a body that they could never have, thereby unleashing problems with eating disorders.
I'm not saying this is my opinion (or the Margaret Sanger issue because I believe in birth control) but just saying these are opinions that are out there and that is why people might be on the list.

FDR?!
WTF?!
David Duke is on, but no Fred Phelps? Wouldn't you think an American with a site called "God Hates America" be on that list?
Oh Besty already said that. Well, I agree.

Gothamp - gotcha. My comments were directed towards those whose opinion you were paraphrasing anyway :o)
You know, come to think of it, we should just put Barbie on the list. And the Bratz dolls!
When I was younger I thought Barbie was beautiful. But I was MUCH more into the American Girl Doll collection. I was much more about having curls like Samantha Parkington than having looks like Barbie. I have to say, and I don't want to sound judgemental, but I kind of feel as though parenting has something to do with it as well. My mom would only buy me one Barbie, and my neighbor ended up throwing her in a lake. Surprisingly, I wasn't that sad. Looking like Barbie never occured to me because my parents involved me with better toy collections. I'm not saying that girls who look at Barbie as this wonderful woman have awful parents, but I always hate blaming it on just the doll itself, and the self-esteem of children. But I totally understand where all of this is coming from. I remember discussing the whole issue of Barbie image in an AP English class last semester, and another girl in my class said "Well, she did set a good example for young girls what with all her jobs. You can be anything you want." (I guess she was saying you can be anything you want if you're tall, thin and have unusually perfect breasts. And perfect make-up. And hair.)
On that note, Bratz dolls are disgusting. I was baby-sitting this girl Chloe the other day, and she is about 9 so she's all about the Bratz collection. As I haven't actually been around toy stores in about 5 years, I was SO surprised to see what the Bratz dolls actually were. Yikes.
And on another note, I have never heard these things about Al Sharpton before. The books I've read were all so positive. I personally do not rank him in my top ten worst Americans of all time, but I am surprised at everything I'm learning now.
Madonna? oh come on.
Because she epitomizes the american dream of rags to riches and says and does what she wants and is filthy rich with tons of hit songs and is a strong female whose career has stayed on top for over 25 years?
screw that list.
it obviously sooooooooo slanted, i mean..read the rest of those names on list 3. give me a friggin break.

AnnaK, you offically make the best statements

lol!
And I totally agree with you about parenting and Barbies. And those Bratz dolls are just so gross, have you seen the baby Bratz? How scary is that - I'm like ok its a baby wearing eyeliner with fishtails and blue eyeshadow...that's cute........
And I def had 3 of the American girls and all their books - I loved those dolls!
I disagree about Madonna being on the list, but thats just my opinion
