The swan theme from Swan Lake. The oboe! The harp! The strings! The woodwind! The brass! I've given the matter serious consideration, for many years now, and there isn't a single piece of music on the face of the planet more achingly beautiful than this.
*isn't listening to it right now and weeping, honest...*
I'm surprised no one's mentioned "In the Aeroplane over the Sea" by Neutral Milk Hotel. I think in terms of lyrics, it's one of the most beautiful songs ever written.
Also, Jeff Mangum's cover of "I Love How You Love Me".
"Yes, the brutalities of progress are called revolutions. When they are over, men recognize that the human race has been harshly treated but it has moved forward." - Les Miserables
Another vote for Annie's Song. Also Let the River Run by Carly Simon and Suo Gan from Empire of the Sun.
If you have never heard of a song called "Boats and Birds" from GREGORY AND THE HAWK, go to youtube and listen. GORGEOUS!
There are probably a dozen or more songs that always touch the deepest emotional chords in me when I hear them. Of course, when asked what they are I draw a blank.
I will be posting them as I remember them.
For now, Say It Somehow from Light In The Piazza.

"Time After Time (Eva Cassidy)"
Eva Cassidy singing anything makes it more beautiful.
Schmerg, I left the theater and immediately bought the "Amistad" soundtrack because of that song.
One of my favorite beautiful songs is "If I Could" by the Pat Metheny Group found on their "First Circle" album/CD. I have just layed in the dark or candlelight and listened to it many times over the years.
"Eva Cassidy singing anything makes it more beautiful."
Word.
Okay, I am just gonna dork myself out here, but Danny's Song makes me cry every time.

"Joni Mitchell's Both Sides Now."
And I love the remake she did that was used in LOVE, ACTUALLY. It's such a lush arrangement, and her perspective from 'the other side' of aging makes it very impacting.
I forgot to mention this one earlier:
Have to Drive by Amanda Palmer
"Yes, the brutalities of progress are called revolutions. When they are over, men recognize that the human race has been harshly treated but it has moved forward." - Les Miserables
I can't help but throw in a little country - must watch all the way to the end for the stongest emotion.
Keith Urban - You'll Think of Me
Wow.
I'm with Taz - there are songs and musical compositions that fill me with emotion because the beauty is overwhelming, but, trying to name them when asked leaves me a little blank.
But,
Say It Somehow from "Light In The Piazza" is absolutely on the list. As are most of the gorgeous ballads from that show.
Most of the soundtrack from "Out of Africa" makes my heart soar, to the point of bringing tears to my eyes.
Nessun Dorma. For that matter, most of Puccini.
Yes, yes, yes to 'Both Sides Now', 'Annie's Song', 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps', 'At Last' and all of the others that have been mentioned.
I have to add 'Moon River'. Beautiful.
Another song that isn't well known, but moves me, is Carly Simon's 'Do The Walls Come Down?'. It's haunting and beautiful. Both the lyrics and the melody.
'Climb Every Mountain'
'Somewhere Over The Rainbow'
the 'Pearl Fishers Duet' (Au Fond du Temple Saint). GORGEOUS!
...which brings me to a long list of Opera Arias.
I will be thinking about this all day.
Some of my contemporary favourite include:
"Breathe Me" - Sia
"Plane" - Jason Mraz
"Sorry" - Maria Mena
"Falling Slowly" - Once
"Blower's Daughter" - Damien Rice
and of course:
"The Luckiest" - Ben Folds
I'm not really familiar with the show this song is from, but maybe some of you know it better. It's "Meadowlark" from "The Baker's Wife." I've heard Sara Ramirez sing it a couple of times and although I'm obsessed with her, it isn't just her with it. She brings the emotion, but I just love it in general now because of her.
My other favorite is "Don't Cry Out Loud" with Diana DeGarmo singing it.
