Maybe lack of fore-knowledge that someone was going to die would have made the episode work for me more. The producers DID say that someone major would die.
Took me a bit of searching for articles from a couple of months ago, but this was all over the news during the summer previews for the season:
07/26 - From the Associated Press, via TV Guide, comes word from series creator Marc Cherry that a November storyline will involve a 'huge hostage situation in a supermarket,' that Lynette and several other primary characters will be present, that one character will be wounded, and that one lead will be killed. Source: Entertainment Weekly

Did you get a LEAD who dies? Hardly. We got a character dying who was more or less brought on at the end of least season for the purpose of being killed off last night. Like I said, not that I WANTED Tom or Carlos or any of them to die (I knew none of the housewives would bite it), at least that would have lived up to the hype a bit more.

MJR - Not every episode is named after a Sondheim song, but the majority of them are. The rest are usually references to other showtunes or just song titles. One of them in season one was a Johnny Cash song.
Still, I love the idea. :)

I was impressed with the mix of pathos and violence in last night episode. Brilliant.
It seemed to go back to the roots of what the show is about housewives desperated enough to do insane things. But somehow is manages to to stay grounded in the truth about the necessity of friends.

I love how one episode has been called "Sweetheart I Have to Confess." Hell yeah, Follies!
I'm pretty sure every episode this season has had a Sondheim title so far.
This season also had "Listen to the Rain on the Roof." More Follies, love it.

Why didn't everyone scramble for the gun while Edies' nephew was holding the crazy lady????
uh, maybe because in that sort of situation everyone is almost in shock. No one is thinking like they normally would.

Why the shot of the legs of the person doing the shooting like it was going to be some big "OOH!" moment when they showed who actually did it?

I think it was the best written episode yet in the series.
For me, it's up there with the episode from the first season where Paul Young's murder of Mrs. Huber coincided with the the passionate love-making of Susan and Mike. VERY powerful moment.

I wondered the exact same thing. I was like "Is there something special about this lady that I don't know?"
I loves last night's episode, though. One of the best I've seen since the pilot.
It was awesome. - theaterkid1015

Umm no she wasn't. She had one line earlier in the episode where we learned her son goes to the same school as Caroline's.
I didn't think was the greatest writing ever, either. Lynette's yelling at Caroline was totally unbelievable. After Caroline just shot Nora like that, Lynette would NOT have said what she said then - I didn't buy it for a second. Also, why did Lynette get up and smear the blood ON HER FACE?? It was all over her hands, and she wipes her face? What the hell WAS that??
And though Huffman's acting is usually good, I thought she was TERRIBLE in the dream sequence - it was so forced - maybe because the writing was so poor.
And don't even get me started on how ridiculous the "we have to have Susan do something stupid" moment was. The one redeeming part of this episode was Marcia Cross.
Please note, I'm a usual defender of the show -- I stuck through it last season -- and I'm only now beginning to REALLY wonder why I bothered.

-- Thank you. Jason's last post was so much bitching, I wanted to pull my hair out.
Last season was weak, this season is a strong improvement. Many of us very very touched by the episode, please don't take that away from us.

actually, its funny you mention that, because I was definitely thinking about it after the show... and I realized that lynette really IS the kind of character who would do that. I mean, if you think about it, it is VERY fitting for her. Out of all the main women characters, she's the one WOULD get that incredibly angry and emotional and upset over Nora being shot. She's just very strongly humane like that. Now, if they'd had, say, Bree in that situation, it would have been entirely different. Or even susan- susan would have been emotional I'd think, but she probably wouldn't have the courage to stand up against Carolyn like that. So, just from a character perspective, I felt her reaction was very fitting. And thats a big part of why it DID work, in my opinion.
And I'm pretty sure she wasn't smearing blood all over her face for the heck of it, she was def wiping her face because she'd been crying. So...it just made sense... it wasn't really meant to be any huge thing I dont think haha. If anything, it was just showing her getting the strength to take a stand, because right after that is when she started yelling at carolyn.
Oh, and lastly, I think the dream sequence was PURPOSELY kind of...overacted :) and it actually worked. I dont know, it just made sense to me because to me dreams always seem so much more..dramatic and unrealistic anyway. If that were supposed to have been real life, I'd totally agree, it would be over acting. But I just thought it was a really cool acting choice in that situation, because it emphasized the dream-like sense of the scene

The woman who shot her was her son's Sunday School teacher, right? or did I just hear incorrectly?
#119re: The official Desperate Housewives Love Thread
Posted: 11/7/06 at 6:55amI thought it was an Emmy-caliber episode all-around. Laurie Metcalf's performance should, at the very least, win her a nomination, as should Hoffman's. Unlike jasonf, watching this episode made me glad that I've stuck with the show up until now. It was the best episode of the past two seasons. Very well done!

Posted: 11/7/06 at 7:11amI think the point of the Sunday school teacher shooting Carolyn was supposed to show that even the most unexpected people can do unexpected things in desperate situations. Yo uwouldn't have expected it to be her. And who knows? Maybe this is some kind of character intro. Maybe we'll be seeing more of her in the future.

After seeing all the "OMG best episode EVER" people are giving it, I am starting to actually agree with Jason.
And I was fighting him on it on Sunday.
Susan doing something stupid was very annoying, as always. How about we get through a couple episodes when she doesn't?
And the writing was not up to par this episode
#123re: The official Desperate Housewives Love Thread
Posted: 11/7/06 at 8:53amI agree the Susan-doing-stupid thing was really irritating. It seemed so inappropriate at the time and when she did it, it wasn't funny, it was "Oh my God that woman is crazy and she's going to shoot Julie just because Susan is yelling at her." I mean, sometimes it's funny when Susan does stupid things, but seriously, this time it wasn't funny at all.

Yeah it would have been a LOT more effective if Bree's daughter was in there and she did something like that. Or if Tom did for Lynette. That wouldl have made it interesting, especially if it had been Bree.
HAving Susan do it seemed pointless and boring, it didn't move the plot anywhere, it was not funny at all.
And since when are people not allowed to support their opinion with articles and further explain why they disliked an episode?
#125re: The official Desperate Housewives Love Thread
Posted: 11/7/06 at 9:01amThat's actually a good idea. If it had been Danielle in there and Bree had done it, it might have actually been touching. But with Susan...it just seemed...dangerous.
#127re: The official Desperate Housewives Love Thread
Posted: 11/7/06 at 10:41amThat's what I thought RobbOh2- I thought Caroline was the Sunday School teacher of the woman's son (the woman who shot her). There was a comment earlier that Caroline said to her about not wanting her son to wake up without a mommy.

thats actually a really good point! *thinks back to last season when Bree came to Danielle's rescue and it was incredibly touching* And I agree, that was the one part of the show that was rather weak... I mean it didn't destroy the episode by any means, but it was the one part that was just like... "ok, move along now". Its just too predictable for susan.
Oh, and can I just say, this actually worked I thought within the context of the show and characters, but how STUPID was it for carolyns husbande to actually listen and ask carolyn to let all the kids and older people go!? I was like "way to make her want to just shoot them all just because he asked her not to!" Again, it worked, because his character seemed that stupid anyway, but it was just frustrating haha
