The religious answer, which is accepted by Jews and Christians, is that it is God's judgement against Iraq for their treatment of the Jews. One of the places it is foretold is in Jeremiah 50. It talks about bringing down Iraq's proud leader and that Iraq will be least among the nations and wholly desolate.
Additionally, the Scripture gives judgements for Iran and Russia. Prophecy says that both of those nations will join together and rise up against Israel.
Finally, the Scripture talks about an evil dictator coming out of the European Union and striking against Israel.
Thanks Goth!
Hey....let's all go out and stone all of the adulterers!

The fact that a scriptural defense is seriously offered as a rational reason for this madness is terrifying.
and the idolaters, can't forget them! Oooh and the slothfull coke snorting drunks..... ooops we can forgive them!
Let's not forget those who "spill their seed on the ground!"
i had hoped i would get a thought provoking discussion out of this. i'm sure i am not the only one who feels the same. i guess i really was expecting too much.

Nobody says you have to believe it. But I've told you things that are going to happen in the future whether you believe it or not.
Good catch Windy can't forget about them! How about the vengeful think they can get a bye in this round?
Sorry Marquise,
It's pretty simple George Bush believes that he is here to enforce the Will of God.
Other than that...I honestly can't say.
I loved seeing Richard Belzer on THE VIEW today, taking no prisoners on the subject of what's offensive and what is not. When the little whiny "values" spouting Republican, Elizabeth, started shaking her finger and wagging her tongue about Howard Stern, and how "something HAD to be done," Belzer cut her off and said to many of us, war is far more obscene than anything on the airways. Amen, Richard. That's the moral high road. The lower more human and understandable one taken by Bill Maher this week was "...why do I have to keep feeling sorry for the Iraqi and worrying about their fate, and their welfare, and their electricity? What the hell do any of them care about us?"
I've reached a point where I can no longer argue the moral issue of this war. That drove us to the streets before it even started, when our fervor and VALUES were denounced as unpatriotic. Now we know that Bush didn't even expect casualities--he still pretends they are either minor or something to be covered up (no photos, please). But I've got my own moral battle fatigue, and have cynically fallend into Maher's place: I'm tired of hearing about the success of jump-starting a country that is on the verge of collapse,at best ambivalent toward the occupier, at other times violently opposed to us. I have no empathy left for thier crises when so many of our lives have been taken for so little gain. How can the parents of those 1,100 plus dead (and thousands of maimed/wounded) turn on the news, see the debacle in flames, and feel their children died for a noble cause? The cause comes from a narcissistic regime of narrow, hardline ideolgues who have damaged our reputation forever in the Arab world, and cut off relations with needed allies it'll take generations to rebuild. It's immoral and obscene. And failing. Not even accomplishing any of its goals. That's the bottom line for me.
This Iraq war is CRAP, pure and simple. It was based on a lie, but we can not leave now, we're stuck there.
Marquise it is just plain and simple this war is based on a lie

Goth - I don't doubt you believe it, which is what I think is terrifying. And I would take exception to your generalization that your reason "is accepted by Jews and Christians" - some, perhaps, but not all by any means.

No, you are not the only one. The disgust I feel is immeasurable. I'm not sure if watching the news upsets me more or if it is knowing that we have developed a higher threshold to this disaster. At first, lives were lost, blood splattered, and we were all devestated. Now, it seems as if many have become incredibly desensitized to this horror. Kidnappings, beheadings, and suicide bombers are all commonplace. Everytime the news reports more deaths, I just want to cry. I feel as if there is absolutely no end in sight. I was against this war to begin with, and the travesty which has resulted, I would like to believe, is even beyond the scope of Bush's intentions.
At this point, we have already lost. It's just a matter of how we can get out of there and be safe. Is there a way?
We went to war for OIL.
This is coming from someone who did support the war in Iraq when I believed the lies.
first of all RodneyK my father has passed. i'm not going to stoop to your level and start bringing your parents (assuming you have any) into this. if the armed forces is letting people with your mental capabilities in to defend us then my friend this nation is in a sorrier state than i thought it was.
FYI: My father fought in Vietnam.

Rodney, you seem rather negative about your time served in the armed forces. If this is the case, and you feel as if you lost those 10 years of your life, why would you advocate serving? If you found it to be a miserable experience, why would you want others to endure the same experience? [This is not meant to be sarcastic- I'm really interested in your response.]
everything your posting is pointing to your mental capibilities. you dont even have the capability of posting on a serious issue without resorting to cursing. you're not putting up a good argument for the defense of your "mental capabilities" when you resort to those kind of tactics.
as for me, i will take the high road, you my friend can choose to "go off" on me on these boards if it makes you feel superior. i don't need to stoop to that level to prove anything to anyone on this board and that includes you.
