I don't know if I'm surprised about this because Philadelphia is so "blue collar" or not at all surprised because of how snobbish Philadelphia "old money" can be.

Posted: 7/10/09 at 8:50amThat is a terrible story. What are we back in the 50s-60s again? It is a shame. I do not buy the comments made by the Club. Those poor children having to hear those comments is terrible and I am sure terrifying for them. What a world we still live in.
re: This makes me SO sad#2
Posted: 7/10/09 at 8:56amThe story upsets me less than the comments at the bottom of the page.

There was a similar story a few years ago in Nutley, NJ. It was actually more blatant:

This whole thing is absolutely completely 100% deplorable.

The comments are nasty, but, it IS a private pool, so they can have a say over who uses it.
It also sounds as if the locals are just as upset at the shout of 'racisim', so it must just be a small group of upset people.

Posted: 7/10/09 at 11:06amThat Nutley incident hits close to home. My parents (asian father, hispanic mother)had many friends in nutley and my brother went to school in nutley. We live in the adjacent town. When this came out they weren't suprised. It was well known that this club didn't allow patrons of color to come in. Their close friends were members of the club and invited them to come swim. They didn't go because they knew that they wouldn't be accepted there, on the reservations their host had.

That right! Obama being president means that there is no more racism anywhere!

re: This makes me SO sad#10
Posted: 7/11/09 at 5:30pmI'm not at all surprised. With the exception of Philadelphia and, to an extent, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania can be an extremely racist state. I wish that this was the first time I'd heard of an incident like this happening in the PA suburbs.

"some of the comments the people left are horrible."
They are. I reported the guy who said every white person should kill one black person. Nothing will happen but I felt a little better

Philadelphia is WIDELY racist city! The Northeast especially ... there is still a bit of racial tension. Not any type of violence (although for those who don't live here: There was a BIG problem with black "criminals" shooting white cops, frequently. Lots of cop deaths last year...) between the groups or anything, just a lot of talk.
Huntingdon Valley (where this happened) is theoretically in the Northeast/NEPHL, and it's not a surprise at all - it's one of the ritzier parts of that region, but still "in city boundries." Usuaully these type of things don't happen so far out, but I can't say I'm surprised it unfortunately happened...
NEPHL is rough, ... you can almost pinpoint the divide street lines still. Ask any of the older white citizens who have lived there forever...they can tell you who are the "good hard-working black people" and the "lazy blacks." It's awful, but it's a way of thinking - Philly is still .. old fashioned in this respect. Thankfully, Philly isn't necessarily violent.

But they agreed for the camp to come there....and charged them a pretty hefty fee.
Nasty, disgusting human beings -- and I am SO not talking about the campers.
