My white mama has been saying that she's the reincarnation of Harriet Tubman for as long as I can remember. Would that be why she's always late?

...it's a dumb comment, but Erykah is pretty magical and one of a very small amount of celebrities it would be a natural fit to discuss my mama's reincarnations with.

According to psychology being habitually late is a form of passive aggressiveness. The person is expressing their anger and hostility this way.

I hate lateness so much that I stop making plans with people who are habitually late.

I hate being late, which is awful when you're traveling with someone who is habitually late. It leads to many arguments, and me shouting "it's time to leave and you're NAKED?"

Yet, when you tell them a fake, earlier time to fool them into being on time? That's the only time they do show up on time.

I know a few people who fit a "passive aggressive" interpretation of this affliction, but mostly I'd just call them flaky.

While Badu is a little nutso, not all people who struggle with being late aren't trying or possibly trying harder than others who can make it on time easily.

Cognitive and physical issues can be a problem for some people including myself, and it doesn't help when others reinforce the idea that these people are just lazy. It actually makes it harder to broach the subject. I think that a person's overall attitude is the best judge. At least that is what those who know my issues have said...

I guess she would hate my college marching band's motto then. I heard it way too much because too many people did it all the time.

It is:
To be early is to be on time.
To be on time is to be late.
To be late is just an inconvience.

This happens to me at work too sometimes. I will show up on time, but because nobody else was there, I had to wait outside. Once, my boss was 25 minutes late, and there was a whole group of us waiting. For my job, that is a huge inconvience because I clean up the place, so any time that is lost for me, can't be made up because I have to make sure I'm done by the time people start coming in for lunch.

And in the entertainment industry, it is definitely unacceptable to be late whenever you feel like it. Emergencies, and calling someone to tell them you will be late is one thing, but blowing off things for no reason, is not. I have been told in so many broadcasting and production classes that even just 30 seconds late, could cost you your job.

So yeah, time is essential if you want to keep your job, or not get a bad repuatation for always being late. That said, I really need to go now so I don't make myself late for work. :)

Those "issues" aside, what could POSSIBLY prevent someone from getting their sh-t together and planning ahead so as not to continuously inconvenience others? From my experience, when people are late on a regular basis (not every once in a while--that happens to all of us) it has to do with arrogance and disregard for others (intentional or not).

Bingo, blue! It's their way of venting anger and hostility. Making people wait and refusing to comply with the agreement of time is how they deal with their own issues.

I only know one person in my life who at one time was habitually late, and has reformed. Now, when we meet, she's there before I am!

I disagree. There is another issue at hand if you know that you're keeping people waiting.

Anyway, I'm talking about habitual lateness, where it really is a serious issue to be dealt with.

I know that I'm bad with time management. Things always take me longer than I expect them to, so knowing this about myself, I leave extra time. It's not that complicated.

The way I see it is if you're lazy let's say with doing your own chores like cleaning up and other things personal, then it doesn't affect others. But if you're feeling lazy about meeting up with people at a certain time, and you know that they'll be waiting for you, yet you still put that second to your own laziness, then you've got an issue.

Certain things can make you late, like a flat tire. That is fate. Habitual lateness, say to work or school, means there is something else going on. It may be minor, but there is something making that person self-sabotage. It may be an issue with a person's job if they are late every day, or it may be abandonment issues if a friend is late every time you meet. They subconsiously make you wait for them rather than go through the possiblity you wont show up.
Or they may have an issue with you personally if they disregard your time.

We have regular traveling and theatre-going companions who are never on time. That's because she has MS, and it is impossible for her to know what problems might arise when getting ready to go out. We acknowledge the situation, and choose to appreciate the time we DO get to share, rather than bitch, whine, moan and complain about something that would reflect more upon us than her.

There's just one example.
