I searched to see if this show was discussed before, but I couldn't find anything.
Does anyone else watch this show on TLC? It's such a guilty pleasure. On last night's episode, one of the mothers entered her two-week-old son in one. Talk about jumping the gun. The poor baby looked like he had no idea what was going on.

It is some kind of kiddie porn.
I wonder if any of these parents have seen Gypsy?

I guess not at 2 weeks....LOL! Babies aren't even cute yet at 2 weeks old......

Yes, I did not see anything special about the baby at all. He's probably going to need therapy when he gets older. His mother put a little suit and tie on him. The tie wasn't a clip on either.
I do feel bad for the kids. The one girl was wearing some ridiculous costume that made her look like a peacock, and she was only four. I won't even comment on her little dance in that outfit.

Posted: 7/23/09 at 2:02pmAt least the baby didn't know what was going on! What about the twin girls? The mom actually thought that one was prettier than the other and that she did better on stage. So glad the dad stepped in and took little Miss Diva out of the pageant! I also thought baby "Anna-Nicole" was hilarious- especially in that scaled-down Las Vegas Showgirl outfit!

Posted: 7/23/09 at 2:06pmHow do you get a suit and tie on a 2 week old? I'm actually LOL at that vision in my mind....

I've never watched the show, but I've seen various programs that are similar and it bothers me.
Just because you failed at being a performer or whatever does not give you the right to drag your children into an environment where they are constantly judged on their appearance. I understand that's the way society is nowadays, but let kids be kids.

I think the tie just slipped over his neck, but still. There was no need for him to be dressed like that.
What disturbs me, is how old some of these little girls look with their hair and makeup. They look like adults, but without the body.

The whole concept of child beauty pageants is sick and this program reveals all that is wrong with them. It is properly directed and photographed because it shows us: the little children who throw tantrums and scream "I don't like doing this", the "not so pretty or talented" twin who is forced to compete against the pretty twin who the mom favors and you can see before your eyes the making of a very troubled little girl (the one who is ignored and/or treated as if she's not good enough), the newborn infant, who can't be a month old yet, being paraded around in a beauty pageant while he sleeps, the mothers who are living their lives vicariously through these pageants, the mothers who accept the slaps across the face and other punches from their little girls during a diva moment, the family who has spent up to $70,000 on pageants so far, the gowns which cost in the thousands, the disappointment on the faces of the toddlers when they don't win, and the feeling of superiority with the ones who do.
The one saving grace-one of the fathers refused to put up with his child's diva behavior, picked her up and walked her out of the building.

If you love (to snark on) Toddlers and Tiaras you *must* read the Jezebel.com recaps of the show, they're amazing...

Stockard, I'm sure the point is going right over the heads of those who believe in these contests, and they think the show is glorifying them. But all I see is one revelation after the next. Kudos to the director.

That's basically how I see it. They don't go out of the way to say that it's bad behavior, but I think anyone who doesn't see that is blind.
And yes, I will admit to entering a very small one for my town when I was 16. It was to become town representative to compete in the county fair queen pageant. It was nothing like what they show on television though. But, it was horrible. I ended up wearing my winter formal dress in June because a couple of days before the pageant, all the other girls decided to wear their prom gowns, which I did not own, since I was only in 10th grade. It was walking up and down a trailer hitch to the stage that made me realize I didn't care if I won or not. Of course, I didn't.

Marianne, you were 16, and knew what you were doing, no? I mean, did your mother enter you in it and take over?
These pageants are child abuse perpetuated by selfish mothers, that's how I see it.

Oh yeah, it was my idea. I just didn't like that I had to upgrade my attire because that's what everyone else decided to do. I would have been happy wearing a little dress I made myself.
Yes, I do agree the crazy mothers make them bad. I think I've only seen one mother on this show that refused to let her daughter do all the fake stuff.
re: Toddlers and Tiaras#21
Posted: 8/8/09 at 8:37pmI saw an episode of Tyra (I don't normally watch this show, BTW) with some people featured on the show. Two moms gave their children spray tans against their children's wills. An audience member asked a 10-year-old if she would rather be smart or pretty, and she said she didn't want to be nerdy, so she would rather be pretty. Tyra stepped in (the only time that ever amounts to anything good) and told her to respond by saying "Both are important to me" or something like that.

Danny, if you saw an episode of Toddlers and Tiaras, you'd see the moms doing a lot more than spraying tans against the children's wills.
Maybe the most frightening thing is watching the parents acting out the movements while their kids are on stage doing them. They look like they've been transported to the world of their dreams.

Posted: 8/9/09 at 3:45amThe entire idea of this show makes me feel the need to take a bath, it's just that gross.
re: Toddlers and Tiaras#24
Posted: 8/9/09 at 4:12amI've only seen one clip of the show and that one always makes me laugh when I think about it. It was this little brunette girl who kept telling anyone who'd listen that she was going to buy a cow with her winnings. She had the cutest southern drawl which made her comments of "I'm gonna buy a cow" even more hysterical. And she won so she was running around telling everyone that she was going to get her cow. That's all she wanted - a cow.
re: Toddlers and Tiaras#25
Posted: 8/9/09 at 9:29amI saw this Friday night for the first time and the one mom was going on and on about how one of her twins was prettier than the other (and the pretty one looked like her according to her). It was disgusting.
