re: Toddlers and Tiaras

I saw this Friday night for the first time and the one mom was going on and on about how one of her twins was prettier than the other (and the pretty one looked like her according to her). It was disgusting.

re: Toddlers and Tiaras

I have never in my life seen a show that has almost made me want to vomit. Until I saw a few min of this show. By far the scariest thing I have ever seen on TV.

"the "not so pretty or talented" twin who is forced to compete against the pretty twin who the mom favors and you can see before your eyes the making of a very troubled little girl (the one who is ignored and/or treated as if she's not good enough),"

stockard, I also mentioned this in my first post-disgusting.

I'm a professional. Whenever something goes wrong on stage, I know how to handle it so no one ever remembers. I flash my %#$&. "Jayne just sat there while Gina flailed around the stage like an idiot."

Jane, I can see this little girl having some serious issues as well. I just wanted to slap that mother silly.

re: Toddlers and Tiaras

This reminds me of what George Carlin said about children.

"Kids are just like any group of people, a whole bunch of losers and only a handful of winners."

It's as if these parents think that their kids are the greatest thing to happen to mankind when in fact they are very sick to do this to their kids.

I was actually not that long ago watching an episode of Dr. Phil when I was home sick that talked about this sort of thing. He actually did a good job of trying to get their parents to see the light but to no avail. The parents said that they are training their kids for adult life. Yeah, there is nothing wrong with getting your kids ready for being an adult. However, it is wrong to do such things when the child is four years old.

"The whole concept of child beauty pageants is sick and this program reveals all that is wrong with them."

It is unfortunate these shows on TLC show how monstrous some of these parents can be and give child beauty pageants a bad name.

Too bad more parents on these shows are stage parents and do not have their child's best interests at heart.

The concept of a child beauty pageant isn't entirely bad unless you factor in the stage parents who force their kids to do certain things.

Why aren't these parents being brought up on abuse charges?

I don't know, millie. I think these pageants stress that "you have to be prettier than the other girs." It has nothing to do with the person inside. How about the infants who were just born and are being paraded around on the stage. How utterly ridiculous.

Yes, I know, but when you factor in a stage parent who discourages their child when he or she loses and who literally forces the child to do certain things to the point where the child is in tears, I think it becomes ridiculous. It makes everything ten times worse.

As a one time thing for fun, I don't think it is bad. But when you start revolving the child's life around entering pageants and continuously exploiting them, I think it becomes sickening. Some of these parents are spending thousands of dollars on pageant coaches, clothes and beauty products when they could be spending the money elsewhere on more beneficial things for the child.

re: Toddlers and Tiaras

Actually, speaking of the mother of the pretty and not pretty twins, I totally Googled her after that show, and apparently...

In a "Toddlers and Tiaras" forum posted on the TLC Web site, angry viewers ruthlessly attacked Jamie Sterling for being a bad mother, and someone listed a phone number for social services, encouraging readers to call in and report Sterling. But the forum didn't last long, and an SFGate reader contacted me to let me know TLC removed the forum.

Why was the forum removed? A TLC spokesperson told me they took it down because a reader dug up Sterling's home address and posted it. "We don't normally take down forums with comments about the show," the spokesperson said, "but in this case we had to because we want to protect the privacy of the people on the show."

I always love the please respect the privacy of people who choose to appear in reality tv shows line (a la Jon of Jon & Kate's complaining how he didn't ask to be judged by the public. snerk.) but this is the only place I read about this viewers being so upset by a pageant parent that they called CPS and had TLC shut down their website, anyone else hear any more info about this?

re: Toddlers and Tiaras

And we're constantly being told to report any abuse we see in schools, in public places, as well as in private homes. There are children who have suffered and even died because no one did anything about it. (think Lisa Steinberg).

HELLO- WE WANT TO REPORT ABUSE BEING AIRED ON TV!!!!!!!!

re: Toddlers and Tiaras

I mean I am sure that this wouldn't be considered child abuse in the typical physical sense but I am sure that what is going on can be constituted as psychological abuse. No?

I don't like what goes on regarding those pageants but posting someone's home address on a forum does go too far IMO

It sure is abuse. Mental and emotional abuse can be just as damaging if not more than physical abuse.

re: Toddlers and Tiaras

Yes, it is. People think what they say isn't a big deal sometimes, but really it is. Especially to a child. I know this because my grandma tried to bribe me with money once to lose weight, when I knew I didn't need to.

And in one episode, I remember one of the girls was ten. She is one reason I dislike dealing with children. She was very spoiled and full of herself. I was glad she didn't win one of the puppies that was offered as a prize.

This girl goes on to praise pageant shows, then makes a plug for her daughter:

I must admit that I had quite a laught at the 10 year old girl (who with the make up I thought was much older) who wanted to be called Tootie!

re: Toddlers and Tiaras

I got sucked into some episodes of this on Saturday... yikes.

The really revealing part for me as the comparatively sane mom who didn't spray tan her girl because it was her skin and she didn't want to tan it, and didn't spend much money on clothing nor did she do the freaky make-up, and said when the girl was tired of doing it, that was it. Then of course the person behind the pageant said that the girl was pretty but wouldn't have much chance unless she changed the make-up and the clothes. That girl looked much prettier (as in, a naturally cute, active kid) to me than any of those poor dolled-up kiddos in their weird adult costumes, and she actually seemed to be having a good time, unlike most of the rest of the kids.

The "lesser" twin broke my heart. How can you do and say things like that mom did on camera and not realize there's a problem?

And, the one thing that bothered me the most was some of the comments in that facebook link from a few posts up. Some people actually thinking that this kind of action is okay. I mean, this just makes me want to vomit.
