Was that sarcasm about my avatar? Regardless of possible sarcasm I'll go ahead and promote...

Donna Lynne Champlin, the extremely talented, and incredibly interesting and kind actress playing Pirelli is the Sweeney Todd revival.

Miss Saigon and Follies would be extremely hard to do in a High School, and I think the result would be disaster. Miss Saigon would end up being some cardboard helicopeter dropping from above the stage.

I can see it now...that would just make me sad.

1. The Music Man
2. Hello, Dolly!
3. Oklahoma
4. Fiddler on the Roof
5. Grease

These should not be done by High School.

Instead:
1. All Shook Up
2. Mamma Mia
3. Good Vibrations
4. Ring of Fire
5. Lennon

I think that you are on target with Ring of Fire and Lennon. At my school, John Lennon, the Beatles, and Johnny Cash are very much in style, so I think that a musical like that with an ensemble cast would be nice...at least for my school.

My school is doing Miss Saigon next year. I kid you not. We are a performing arts school, and we are very, very good at fundraising, and we're known for high-quality productions, but... oh my GOD, it's a bad idea. Not to mention we don't have a Kim. At least not one that's any kind of Asian. Sigh.

I have seen A Chorus Line done about 8 times by a High School, and they were pretty good.

High School Musical...oh, wait! That's what my high school is doing next year. Thank God i'm leaving this year.

I concur with Aida. If only for the fact that you can't have a bunch of white girls singin' how the Gods love Nubia. It ain't right.

I know you are talking about high school productions but I am reading through all the shows that you guys are saying you would not want to see high schoolers put on and I have seen many of them performed by youth at my kid's theater camp, Stagedoor Manor. Kids ages 8-18 attend. They put on 36 full scale productions every summer and I would never list them all.

I looked at every post on this thread so far and copied down any shows mentioned that they have done there already:

Miss Saigon
Aida
Evita
Assassins
Sweeney Todd
Cabaret
Chicago
Follies
Les Mis

Off the top of my head, I can think of some musicals I've seen there that I have a feeling you would also have mentioned in this context:
Merrily We Roll Along
Nine
Into the Woods
Jekyll and Hyde
Carrie
Side by Side by Sondheim

These shows have been very well done in my opinion, as well as many many others.

a lot of people are mentioning shows that are not even legal to perform in High School (yet, at least) --- half those shows the rights arent even available...

a high school can pull off any show... if the cast is right and the budget is right and the principal approves the material... however -- it can totally be uncomfortable for an audience member to see a 15 year old half naked onstage...

in the same respect -- kudos to any High School who attempts somthing major! That's what High School is for! It's fun and as long as the show CAN be pulled off... (i.e. A white AIDA will always look weird.)

But if you HAVE that Asian-American who's pipes make you swoon and the budget (and a grid for that matter) that will allow a helicopter to fly in from above... why NOT do Miss Saigon?

"Cats" but then again I'd hate to see anyone do that show.
"Lestat". See "Cats"

Rent
Les Mis
Sweeney Todd
Wicked
Avenue Q (though I am sure it would be hilarious for all the wrong reasons).

I agree that most Sondheim should not be performed in high schools, but I do think INTO THE WOODS and MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG are an exception. MERRILY was written for young people! Granted it flopped, but it still works well with a young cast - I think even Sondheim agrees.

I work with a high school theatre program who produced both shows to great effect - though we have above average talent in the acting department. Our Frankin Shepard and Baker is now someone you might read about on this site.... and at a ripe young age at that!

Falsettos
A Man of No Importance
Ragtime
Parade
First Lady Suite

on the flip side, I think "Spelling Bee" would be a good choice for a high school.

A High School by me has done in recent years Ragtime, The Scarlet Pimpernel, and Evita.

Did I just miss it, or did nobody mention "The Full Monty" ... WHOAH! Nekkid 14 and 15 year olds probably isn't the greatest of ideas. Sadly, I'm sure there have been a few thrill-seeking drama groups who've attempted it. Maybe I'll google it. re: Top 5 Musicals You'd Never Want To See In A High School?

My remaining four would be:
"The Who's TOMMY" - (Content)
"Chicago" - (Content)
"Cabaret" - (Content)
"The Lion King" - (Production Difficulties)

My lip gloss is poppin'...
