Yep, that's the sequence. I think it's fine to watch DW S2 before or after TW S1, but after that things get a bit more tangled together.
Of course, my favorite spinoff doesn't tangle that much at all. Viva The Sarah Jane Adventures!

I watched Children of Earth when it was on the UK (thank you internet), and I must say, I loved it! It was the first series of Torchwood that I've watched, so it made me want to go back and watch the previous two series. Some thoughts on Children of Earth:
*SPOILERS*
- I thought the whole series was superbly written and acted. So much drama and anticipation! I was literally gripping my chair during Day Three.
- Janto was adorable during the first part of the series! I loved the whole "couple" thing going on in Day One. And I thought the scene when Ianto comes out to his sister was really nice
- When Ianto died, Torchwood basically ripped out my heart and stomped on it repeatedly. I thought for sure he was going to comeback in someway during Day Five and was even more heart broken when he didn't.
- Frobisher might have made the series for me. Watching him going through all that was heartbreaking. Especially the end.
- Am I the only one who wished they didn't tell us why the 456 wanted the children? I mean, drugs? Really?
- Also, am I the only one who was creeped out big time by Clem? I'm not exactly sure what it is, but everytime he was on the screen I cringed a bit.
- I didn't get the Gwen hating until I went back and watched the other series. I especially loved the moments between her and Rhys about the baby.
Anyway, I also wanted to talk about the first two series. Although they could have been really cheesey, Torchwood has definitely become one of my favorite TV shows. Thoughts:
- I expected there to be more Janto moments from reading all the hooplah about it online. I think it's kind of ridiculous when people say that this relationship "made" the show for them seeing as how it wasn't there that often.
- The special effects in the Cyberwoman episode made me laugh. A lot.
- I really wish Gwen wasn't the central character. I hated her whole Rhys/Owen/Jack bull****.
- The series 2 finale made me bawl my eyes out. Seriously, I don't think I've ever cried that much because of a TV show or movie. When Tosh tells Owen to stop yelling because it's "breaking her heart," I completely lost it. She was one of my favorite characters, and I'm so sad that she was so under appreciated by everyone (aka Owen)! And then when Ianto updates her status in the system and her message pops up. I get teary eyed just thinking about it! I seriously cried for like 15 minutes after the show ended just thinking about it.
Anyway, isn't series 4 already written? I read somewhere that they're just waiting to see the ratings for Children of Earth to go ahead with it

Well ... I was feeling a little guilty for watching the show ahead of time, but I'm watching it all over again, and I'm still hooked. Actually interesting to watch it knowing what's to come.
As seen on twitter last night: why are the 456 scared? Because 7 ate 9.

For those that have already seen it, pretty clever recap of episode one a la facebook.

The special effects in the Cyberwoman episode made me laugh. A lot.
You mean that you couldn't stay straight-faced at an episode where the villain is killed using a pterodactyl and barbecue sauce? *gasp*
Man, was "Cyberwoman" a low point. The "cyberwoman" was wearing what basically amounted to a metal bikini and metal high heels. Dear lord. Especially since all cybermen seen before that looked exactly the same whether they were originally male or female. What a stupid, cheap attempt at fanservice.
And it makes the Jack/Ianto love story that came a few episodes later totally puzzling. There was seriously no transition: One episode they're threatening to kill each other; the next they're exchanging innuendo and making out.
But hey, that was in the first season! And Torchwood is hardly a show that abides by things like continuity or consistency in characterization. :P

snogging the human Doctor.
What was more sad was the dialogue in that scene. Broke my heart.
#61re: Torchwood: Children of Earth
Posted: 7/23/09 at 11:40pmThe minute he told his sister "I love you" I started to lose it, and yeah, that dialogue was a heartbreaker indeed. As was that final scene in the makeshift morgue.

OK, I wanted to start a thread, and couldn't see a way to under the current configuration. Are we just supposed to 'give up and go home'?

Yeah. It wasn't Ianto's death that really got me - it was Frobisher's. Probably because Peter Capaldi is a better actor than John Barrowman. (Barrowman did try, and at least he didn't ruin the scene, which he has done with Big Drama moments in the past.)
Seriously, though, when I finally realized what Frobisher was going to do with that gun, I was utterly chilled. Euros Lyn's direction was excellent.

When Bridget gave him that box, I was sure I knew what it was, and I, too, was chilled. That poor man to be made the government's scapegoat, and as you say, it was all unnecessary.
But bravo to Bridget at the end, when she got her revenge on the PM on behalf of her late boss!

Can someone please clarify the children-drugs connection? Were the aliens using the children as drugs, or to trade for drugs?

As that child was attached to the creature, I would say they were using them as drugs.
Someone on another board asked who the 456 were. My answer: alien bullies.

Posted: 7/25/09 at 2:22pmYes, they used the children for drugs. Their hormones and such were used. Although they never really explained why they let that one kid go (forgot his name) in 1965
