The new TV GUIDE summer reviews page (by Matt Roush) says you should record it...

"...if only to play it over and over, it's that good. This thrilling five-hour miniseries is the TV event of the summer, a cosmic action-mystery that chills to the core while packing more suspenseful and sexy heat - and even humor - into a week's worth of episodes than most shows do in an entire season."

Aired in Australia last week on cable, my other half loved it

Well I didn't want to get into it, but he's a Satanist. Every full moon he sacrifices 4 puppies to the Dark Lord and smears their blood on his paino. This should help you understand the score for Wicked a little bit more. Tazber's: Reply to Is Stephen Schwartz a Practicing Christian

I have a friend who described the entire affair as "Every bit of pent-up nastiness from years of writing a show that's forced to pander to a kiddy audience came pouring out". Having spent five solid hours watching it all in one sitting on Saturday night, I can confidently say he is NOT WRONG. I have also had my slightly unhealthy crush on Peter Capaldi COMPLETELY validated. It's a brilliant bit o' TV, but your emotions may be a bit battered by the end.

Make sure you bump this thread once y'all have seen it over there; I'd be interested in having proper discussion about it once you know what I'm talking about. :3

Proper discussion? Does that mean we can't talk about John Barrowman flashing his goods? Finally.

I'm trying very hard to be patient and wait to see it on the tv next week instead of search for it elsewhere. BBCA On Demand has a 20 minute preview, and it's really piqued my interest.

I cannot wait. Love Torchwood...and I'm not a SciFi gal, at all.

I know it starts on the 20th but is it running consecutive nights? (I've already got the dvr set...but just wanted to know.)

It was amazing up until the last episode, which definitely took the show in a new direction. It will be interesting to see if they do another series or if this was it.

This was easily the best Torchwood's ever been. For once it was good by the standards of normal television, not just "Torchwood good". Euros Lyn did an absolutely amazing job directing, and credit where credit's due - RTD didn't blow this one, and James Moran succeeded in holding up his end of the deal as well. (The latter wrote one of my favorite episodes of Who but also an episode of Torchwood that I loathe with every fiber of my being, so he was hardly a sure thing.)

I'm really interested in what everyone else's reactions will be.

What, 'Sleeper'? What was wrong with that? I thought it hit just the right note of humanity (and Torchwood can so quickly go so terribly wrong when they focus more on the monsters than the people), and I thought it was rather good. :/

I loathe "Sleeper" for its unthinking acceptance of the extraordinary rendition and torture of a suspect when Torchwood had zero proof that she was an alien invader. They turned out to be right, but by the total lack of evidence at the time they kidnapped and began torturing her, they could just as easily have been wrong. And that's an especially disgusting thing to glorify on TV in these political times.

And that, BTW, is why I wasn't terribly shocked by the "revelations" about Jack's dips into moral ambiguity in CoE. Updated On: 7/15/09 at 07:05 PM

Yes, it will air every night at 9 -10:15 (uncut!). Be sure your DVR is set for beyond the hour!

Spider, don't forget Jack tried to go back in time to find the Doctor, but went back too far --to 1869 I think -- and lived through the latter part of the 19th and the entire 20th century. We know, based on the photo he looked at in the closing moments of the episode in which Gwen married Rhys, that he was married at least once during all that time.

Captain Jack is now hundreds of years old. He was buried by / on the orders of his brother Grey and found by Victorian Torchwood.

True, Turquoise Fish, but I think it becomes an issue of "Wibbly Wobbly, Timey Wimey" because when he was found by Victorian Torchwood, he was working for them at that point (remember Fragments, where it showed us how he came to work for Torchwood), so there were two Jacks in that time frame -- which also means, I guess, that the other Jack was in the vaults during the entire two seasons of Torchwood?

Uh... wasn't the other Jack buried under Cardiff, dying and reanimating through the centuries, until he was dug up in the season 2 finale? :P

He was buried in the early days of Cardiff and dug up I think in 1900 (Exit Wounds is on Saturday night so we'll get that answer). He had the people who worked there put him in the vaults until he could come out in time to thwart his brother's plans.

It gets a bit confusing. re: Torchwood: Children of Earth

This is MAJORILY my fault for only watching a couple of episodes in season 1 (and not liking them) and then just now watching CHILDREN OF EARTH (which I love so far). I missed a lot and I just wanted somethings cleared before I kept going. hahaha. But, I will go back and watch all of season 1 and 2. The leading lady in TORCHWOOD annoys the fool out of me for some reason and one of the reasons why I stopped watching it. re: Torchwood: Children of Earth

Spider, the three-part finale of Doctor Who series 3 is where Jack tells the Doctor how he tried to find him; The next to last episodes of Torchwood series 2 gives you an idea how Jack ended up in Torchwood and the finale (which is on tomorrow night) covers the stuff I mentioned in my previous e-mails. If you have BBC on demand on your cable system you might find the two Torchwood episodes there.

Aw, I like Gwen. And I think she's undeniably awesome in CoE.

Spidey, if you watch the earlier Torchwood there's a fair chance you'll lose your good opinion of it. But then again, we disagree on everything, so who knows. :P

S2 is marginally better than S1, I guess, but that really isn't saying much. CoE was a total transformation for the show - I've never enjoyed it more. The previous seasons might as well be a different program.

I just watched all five episodes of CHILDREN OF EARTH. I don't think a show has EVER made me cringe, almost scream, and bawl while watching it. It was the perfect and SAD ending to any show I have ever watched. I still have tears running down my cheeks.
