Posted: 3/24/07 at 5:10pmOne of them here in Sacramento became a Dimple Records (a local used cd/dvd store). I've always preferred them to Tower anyway -- more fun to shop "used." You never know what you're gonna find. It's kinda surreal though, walking in there, having it be the same layout and same shelving as Tower, but NOT Tower.

It is hard to accept that store is gone
Even though their proces were high, they had a great selection & it was just fun to wander around & find that hard to find item

It would have to be as the rent has to be the size of the annual budget for a small country

I remember hearing what was going into the space, and I don't recall it being NYU.
In fact, I can't for the life of me remember what it was.

Posted: 3/24/07 at 8:00pmAnything is better bthan a huge conglomerate chain. Our local Tower is in the process of becoming a Rasputin's, a tiny independent record chain that's been around since the '60's ... they are also taking over two more Towers up north of us. Rasputin Records is so awesome ... all their employees are extremely knowledgeable about music, and they have a huge indie artists selection. It is also an amazing place to find rare, used albums ... that's how they make a lot of their money.

Posted: 3/25/07 at 2:20amWell I guess there wasn't a need, that's why they closed. But as someone who worked for Tower and worked with the staffs of about 25 different Towers in varius parts of the country, you'll be hard pressed to convince me that it was a "Huge conglomerate chain" (All stores were owned by one man, and every single full-time employee got paid vacations and health insurance) or that Tower employees were not "knowledgeable about music." You have to really love music (And DVDs and Books and collectibles....) to work at a store where you work nights, weeekends and holidays and wait on people who, after you are unemployed, say "I'm glad they are gone. They were a rip."

You mis-understood me; Tower was an indie chain, and I am so angry that it closed ... if you read my posts over the last several months, I am extremely adament about fighting for what is right, and if any good comes out of Tower's closing, it will be a lot more people realizing that record stores need to be supported and cherished, for reasons which are both moral and sensible.
Rasputin Records is a totally awesome chain with an extremely knowledgeable staff and amazing selection of indie artists. I never meant that Tower was anything less (well, except for perhaps their indie selection; Rasputin's "is" a lot better, I admit :) ). I "did" mean that NYU or another independent store/chain moving into New Yorks Tower is way better than a gigantic conglomerate.

Posted: 3/25/07 at 10:38amHaving Barnes and Noble move in across the street didn't help. There was price competition on the more saleable items. But Tower had one of the best classical departments - fantastic selection of ballet and symphonic music. That I miss.

Did it ever occur to you that NYU *is* a huge conglomerate chain that is eating up the Village quicker than Chinatown could eat Little Italy? That people now refer to the area as "NYU"? Pretty soon it's gonna be labled as that on maps, you know? Does no one remember when they razed Poe's house for their own purposes, despite massive protest? Eating and eating away...

Posted: 3/25/07 at 5:08pmIt is the fate of most urban universities to devour their neighborhoods. See, for example, Columbia swallowing Harlem, and GW in Foggy Bottom. But I hadn't heard about the Poe house - now that's a crime.

I admit ... "that" never occured to me, but you are definitely correct now that I think about it. Cal Berkeley, a university about an hour away, wanted to remove huge historic tress to make way for a new athletics complex, and pretty soon, we had activists actually living in those trees, protesting the decision.
In a way, this is the same thing.

tmm, I remember hearing about that on the news. Wasn't it that park that the community had built and people hang clothes on the trees for the homeless? I could be thinking of another one on that, but I thought it was Berkeley. I mean I guess the "good" thing about all of this, if you were to really try in find one, it does mean that more people are going to college, right? It just seems like people could have a bit more respect for their enviroment.
As for what will happen for the 66th st. Tower, what if Julliard bought it? Then NYU and Julliard could have a gang fight on the ground where West Side Story was filmed (before the slums were razed and Lincoln Center was built-- that one was a *good* neighborhood change!).

No, it had to do with the new football training facility the university wants to build, and they need to remove these trees in order to build it. Thankfully, a judge has temporarily haulted the plans (I forget why), but Cal still wants to construct their new building on that spot.
I don't remember anything about a park ... have to do a bit of research on that.
