Well, Ellie has four months to get herself a fake ID...either that or she can sip a double water on the rocks. Ouch!
Tiff, I suppose you could always tell your friends/coworkers that they can feel free to give you a few extra dollars and that you'll be donating it all, and if anyone's not up to spending more than the $1, then at least they'll be wearing it/spreading the word. Did we ever find out the real deal on the bracelets/sweatshops? Was it the One bracelets or MPH, or both that are "tainted," if you will??
ETA: Any crazies at work, last night?
Good call, Mabs (re: donating what they want). All I know about the bracelet/sweatshop fiasco is that the Canadian MPH bracelets are "union-made in Canada", so they're not the ones discussed in #1's article. There is a difference between the One bracelets and the MPH ones though, just that both are white. I think the MPH bands that were made in sweatshops are probably the ones being distributed by the UK branch, which I won't be getting. So I think I'll be able to buy the ONE and MPH bands in good conscience!
I had one crazy at work last night, with the best pick-up line ever. It was 11:30pm, so I was already leery, and he was a crack addict/bum with a stagger, and a known shoplifter who had tried to con the pharmacy several times into giving him syringes. We were all watching him like a hawk, but he came over to me and asked about the lotto numbers from last night. I told him they wouldn't be available until today, and he slurred, "Well, since you're so beeoootiful, I'll let you get away with it this time. But I'll be back..." (trying to flirt) and I'm thinking, his eyes are dialated and he's really high...so much for the compliment. Anyway, he was rambling something about working down the street and his boss making him take his lunch break there, and his line was, word for word: "So now you know I work at the porn shop right over therrrre so if you ever wanted to get to know me better...[insert grotesque eyebrow-wiggle]"
I told him I'd keep it in mind (what else could I say??) and he said, "You'd better! I'm just around the corner..." and then stagger out, rubbing his nipple, which had some sort of liquid staining his shirt.
Seriously. This is what my love life has come to. (Did you see my post on the Bitches thread about the other three possibilities?? )
AHAHAHHAHAHA!!! Well, I seriously hope the cracked out porn store worker isn't your best prospect...though I'm not one to talk, w/ my marginally derranged harpsichord enthusiast! I'll have to check out the bitches thread!
I just got off the phone w/ my mom. I guess my folks were ready to put my dog to sleep last night (Quick recap: he's like 14 years old, has a heart murmur, and has been having some serious kidney problems lately...and apparently he wasn't eating anything for the past few days...he went to the vets and had some blood work done and the results came back about as bad as it gets) BUT he woke up this morning all peppy, and wanting to eat. I guess he's chowing down on baby food and rice right now! So, hooray!!! We're having some probs w/ the critters lately. One of our two cats has been really bad lately. We put him on kitty anti-depressants (what would Tommy have to say about that!) and I guess he's been doing better too. *sigh*
*off to read the bitches thread about your romantic prospects!*
Good news about your dog!! I'm so happy for you - losing a pet hurts a lot, even if you're expecting it. (Unfortunately, both my pet bunny and my pet turtle died violently. )
So is the harspichord enthusiast going for you??
ETA: Bruce tickets go on sale in Vancouver soon. Starting price is $95, for seats that were $50 for U2. What. The. F*CK?
Yeah, good to know my poor puppy's got a little time left in him! I'm kind of glad I'm not at home, because I wouldn't want to be there for the big decision. We had a cat put to sleep when I was younger (she got hit by a car...no more outdoor cats after that!)
Bootleg venting: I've had this trade pending for 3 bootlegs (The Doors, Lou Reed from Lincoln Center from 72, and Velvet Underground from NH) since APRIL. This guy has been dragging his feet saying he didn't have the right CDs for months, and promised to send them and a couple of U2 shows (along w/ a U2 poster) to make up for the delay. So today, my mom calls and tells me I got a package from him that's got a Lou Reed show from 92, a Frank Zappa Show, and Dereck and the Dominos. What the F*CK?!?!?!? That's not even remotely close! He said he sent two packages out, and if that second one doesn't arrive tomorrow w/ Lou Reed 72, VU from NH and The Doors, I'm gonna be ripSH*T!
Aaaaanywaaaay...Tough call w/ your men. Sounds like the Djimon look-alike is a bit of a catch. Maybe he's hitting on you because he can tell that you're not just another one of the flitty, trashy extras. Don't sell yourself short, Tiff! Be sure to keep us posted!!!
Hi girls--I've missed you! Just saying a quick hello--I have to go catch up on the 5 pages I've missed.
(And Mabel, I'm so glad your doggy has some more living to do...it is so hard--I didn't mention it, but we did end up losing our little Gracie back in April, and it is always devastating--anyway, hooray that she's got some pep back, and you can have a chance to have more time with her!!!)
Thanks for the good thoughts, groupie. I'm sorry to hear about Gracie. It's always sad loosing a pet, especially when they've been around forever. I think Hamlet's 14...I forget when we got him, but I've had him for more than half my life, so it'll be sad when we finally lose him.
Seemed like I had some U2 news, but I forget what it was. Oh (this wasn't it, btw) I guess Bono had to dash from Scotland yesterday to make the concert, and during the second song, he had to change his shoes...there's some speculation that he arrived wearing slippers!
Hmmm, what else? Tiff, I guess the first preview reviews of Lennon seem to be pretty decent. Want to try for student rush tix in October? I guess they sell front row for $26. I wonder what theatre it's at and how high the stage is. Front row for Avenue Q was fabulous, but Dracula was dreadful (and no, not just because the show was so damn awful!)
Wohoo! I just bought a pair of nosebleeds for The Rolling Stones at MSG on ticketmaster!!! I plan on selling the extra at a slightly marked up price or maybe I could trade it for something else?? Hmmm...Hooray for nosebleeds!
...Hamlet didn't make it. My folks had to have him put to sleep this afternoon. I don't know whether I'm glad I wasn't home for this or not. We've had him forever, so I'm kind of sad that I couldn't give him one last pat, but at the same time, I guess it was easier not having to be there for that decision/discussion, etc. I've had a good cry...but really, he wasn't doing very well at all, so it's better to have put him to sleep than had him hanging on, suffering. Hopefully my cat's anti-depressants solve his problem (I won't go into it, so we'll just say his "problem"...but it's getting kind of out of hand) so we won't have to put him to down too. I'd hate to loose two of the three so close together.
Aww, I'm sorry about Hamlet, Mabs. (And Gracie too, Groupie!) It's definitely better to let him go instead of having him suffer. I hope you still have pictures to remember him by!
Nice going on the Rolling Stones tix, Mabs! I say if you're going to sell one, then put it on eBay at the face value for starting bit. It's the only way I can live with myself! (Oh, and mail the ticket somehow that way the guy standing next to you won't realize you're the one he bought his scalped ticket from - seems less awkward.)
Definitely want to try for Lennon rush in October. I don't think my budget is going to let me buy much more than that! (I'm allotting $600 for airfare alone, so I'm aiming for about $1000-$1200 for the trip after all is said and done. First I have to pay off my May and June credit cards, and the thousand dollar loan from my friend. Then I'll deal with NYC.)
Where was the concert yesterday? Did Bono make any comments on the London bombings?
Thanks, Tiff. We have tons of pictures, thankfully. I don't have any with me here...or maybe I do in my boxes from school downstairs. We're a big picture taking family. Seriously...TONS!
I'm kind of on the fence about the Stones tix. I checked an hour or so ago, and they still had some on ticketmaster. That's certainly going to put a damper on my plans to sell for any profit. Though, they havne't announced the opener for MSG...maybe if it's someone big, that'll up the value. Beck and Pearl Jam are opening in cities/dates around NYC.
Yeah, I'd be up for cheap Lennon. I don't think I'd want to pay more than that. It kills me to pay more than $25/ticket! Aaaanyway, I'm sure you'll be able to get by w/o spending too much money in October. I mean, you'll have a place to stay for free (well, for most of it, if you're still getting the hotel, etc)...the tix are paid for, we can eat on a shoestring budget (hey, I've got a kitchen!)...it'll be fine!
Guess that's about it for now. It's almost 8. I need to find something to eat.
Exactly. I think my only splurge will be for the hotel night and the fancy-shmancy dinner I'm going to drag your asses out for!
Oh! I just found this online. I didn't realize your guys's MTV coverage had been so piss poor!
LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - After a drubbing from critics, MTV and VH1 will rerun 10 hours of coverage of the Live 8 concert events without commercials on Saturday.
VH1 will carry the first five hours from 10 a.m.-3 p.m., while MTV will carry the second leg from 3-8 p.m.
MTV was roundly assailed by pundits and critics for the frequent commercial breaks and other interruptions during its live coverage of the July 2 concerts.
"In the wake of our coverage, our viewers have resoundingly told us online they want to see full performances from their favorite artists," MTV Networks Music Group president Van Toffler said Thursday.
Reuters/Hollywood Reporter
Yeah, our coverage was pretty rancid. I saw that too...I think they had it on an AOL blurp or on interference or something...Speaking of which, their concert yesterday was in Berlin. It was a standard setlist, and it didn't seem like there was a whole lot added about London. I think he made a comment or two, but that was about it. I figured they might have added Walk On or something??
Fancy-shmancy dinner, eh?? You realize my entire wardrobe consists of jeans and I don't own any make-up (shhhh...it's embarassing!) How fancy are we talkin' here? I'm exaggerating. I do have skirts and stuff (but I really don't own any make-up). Hmmm...I may have some shopping to do before October.
It's okay, I don't own any make-up aside from lip products. I think we'll both have some shopping to do before October (or better yet - shopping to do IN October!!).
Aw, Mabs, I'm so sorry about Hamlet. I know that must be so hard. But 14 is pretty old, so he had a long life. *hugs*
Maybe I'll have to have my parents record Live 8 coverage again tomorrow (tomorrow is Saturday in the US, right? It's already Saturday here, and I can't keep it all straight). They'll love that. We get three channels here, and they're all crappy New Zealand channels.
I'm still a little skeptical about Lennon, so you guys will have to tell me how it is. Is it rush they have? As opposed to lotto?
Oooh! Good times! I just get into the habit of being schleppy at school. Really, why do people feel it's necessary to get all decked out to go to class?!?! And work is in "casual summer" mode, so really, why bother? *shakes head* It also doesn't help that I'm incredibly lazy when it comes to that kind of stuff. I'm definitely a card carrying member of the "roll out of bed and go" club.
Aaaanyway.
(You mean "line-up" vs. "lotto", right? "Rush" is really any last-minute tickets you're rushing to get before the show, oui?) *revels in smartness*
Some stupid people make me want to stab things. For a laugh:

Yes, Oh-Smart-One, I meant is it a first-come, first-serve line up deal or is it a lottery where you put your name in?
I don't make you want to stab things, do I? *whimpers* My mistake wasn't *that* stupid.
Thanks, Elphie. He did live a long and happy (aka: SPOILED) life up until the last few months.
Tiff, for Lennon, they set aside the first row for students. You have to get there that morning before the box office opens. I'm not sure yet how busy/popular it's going to be. I'd heard pretty bad things about Lennon in SF, but it sounds like they must have straightened some things out before it got to NY.
Hey all!
This isn't related to U2, but it's related to music (and we can't have this thread drop too far back). Classes started today and I'm taking the coolest class ever, I love it. It's called The Music Industry. It's all about what goes on behind the scenes in running a band. The professor is a bass player and he seems to have lots of connections; he's played with and is good friends with Pete Townshend, along with some other big names. He's a really cool British guy. The final exam for the class is writing an essay about the movie "This is Spinal Tap." I just felt like sharing my excitement.
That's awesome, Elphie! Be sure to pass on any cool stories he tells you!

That's so sad about poor Hamlet, Mabel. But as you surely know, all dogs go to heaven, so he's in the best place for him.
Glad you're having a fab time in NZ, Elphie! It's mid-winter over there, right? Hope it's not too cold, or if it is, at least your erect nipples attract the hot Vermontian.
I'm invited to Lennon and the fancy-schmancy dinner, right?
As we all know, I am a bigger Beatles fan than Tiff. (It's been proven, Mabel...)
ID shouldn't be a problem. With my stylish ways and air of serene wisdom, I can easily pass for 21.
A final paper on Spinal Tap? I hate you and I'm seething with jealousy, #1!! Sounds like an awesome course! (Will you be the next Clive Davis, missy?)
I suppose we'll let you tag along for Lennon since we'll be blowing you off once you're carded at the clubs! Heh. Does the theatre have booster seats for people your age? (And you may be the bigger Beatles fan - and I do mean bigger - but I'm the one who's more likely to see Paul McCartney before you do! Mwahahahaha!! Oh, and for good measure, can I re-iterate that I KNEW Achtung was a '90s release and that the guy's name isn't Paul McCarthy? I swear, those two blonde moments will haunt me until I die.)
Blech! The internet was down at work, making for one hellish day at the office!
What a ****Ty day. The net was up when I first got in, just long enough for me to get an email from the friend from NH who was supposed to join me for DMB/BNL on the 30th, telling me she hydroplaned and totaled her car on Friday. She's fine, but obviously won't be coming down, so I had to tell the guy I'd pass on the tix...probably just as well, actually. It sounds like Randall's Island would be a bitch to get off after the show anyway.
I then found out that my grant at school has been taken away because I worked last summer, so they deemed me no longer worthy of that $4000. Screw you! I used that money to pay for my books, food (no meal plan any more folks...would be kind of pointless considering I'm paying boucoup bucks to have a dorm w/ a kitchen) and transportation (may I remind you of the most recent fare increase on the MetroCard?!?!?). So now I have to write a sob story to grovel for an increase on my President's Scholarship to make up some of the difference). I love how they say "well, you earned x-dollars last year, so we'll just cancel your entire grant," neglecting to notice the continued increase in the price of the dorms/other cost of living expenses). WTF?!?!?
Then, I've been given a particularly heinous job at work. I've got to add a column in a spread sheet noting an abbreviated job title for 26,000 people...Twenty-six THOUSAND!!! And w/ no internet to take a little sanity break here and there, along w/ a rather loud (exceedingly boring, I might add) two hour impromptu meeting that took place at the desk behind mine, I seriously thought I was going to freak out and just scream right there at my desk!
Anyway...enough bitching.
Thanks for the nice thoughts on Hamlet, Ellie. He was getting old, and we knew he didn't have much longer, but it was still sad. If I weren't such a dolt, I'd post a picture. Oh well.
Guess that's about it. Elph, be sure to fill us in on that music class and other fun little tidbits about NZ!
Aw, sorry Mabs, that really sucks. Hopefully you'll be able to persuade them of their stupidity and get that money back. It's like you're being punished for taking the initiative to get a job and make some money of your own! I hope you manage to sort it out. And I'm glad your friend is okay. You seem to be having a pretty good concert year as it is, and I'm sure you'll get to catch DMB some other time.
I've never been so excited about a class before as I am about my Music Industry class. Today the prof talked about U2 and why they've managed to stay around for so long. I love it!
Ellie, yes, it's freezing. I can see my breath when I'm inside. But now I'm hoping to attract one of my Kiwi flatmates (I've decided I like him better than the Vermontian).
