Ooooh, Elphie!!! I'm so thrilled you've given me an excuse to post long, rambling accounts of my various trials and tribulations!!! Hooray!!
I've taken a lot of 3 hour classes. If they're w/ a good professor, they really aren't bad at all. They only meet once a week, so that's kind of nice! I actually took a "learning community" (2 related classes that count for 6 credits worth of classes) called Urban Social Photography that met for 5 hours once a week! It sounds really daunting, but (other than the fact that it was the first time it was offered and the profs were still kind of feeling their way through the course) it actually went by pretty quickly. We'd usually watch a film about a photographer, have an hour or two of lectures, and then fill in the rest either in the dark room or going to a museum to see an exhibit...The two I have this semester shouldn't be too bad. One of them is Feature Writing (I had the prof for it last year, and he's kind of amusing, and I'm willing to bet he'll rarely keep us the whole time) and the other is The Art of Film, so we'll probably just watch a movie every week and then talk about it. I had a Hitchcock film seminar last fall that was like that. We'd have an hour to bicker about whatever film we watched just about every week...I think there were only one or two that we didn't watch a film or we were assigned to watch a film outside class and just watched highlights/talked about theory, for 2+ hours. I think I just got used to having longer classes, because we had block scheduling all through high school, so it's been ages since I've had a class shorter than an hour and a half. It's gotten to the point where when I get a class that meets 3 times a week for an hour, I get frustrated with how short it is (unless it's math...it should be against the law to have math for more than an hour at a time!)
I didn't see anything about an opening act for Arcade Fire, but I hope there is one. I bet I'd be able to get out of class early enough to swing catching most of it. I hope, I hope, I hope!
Creepy has been moved, thank god! About a month ago an intermittent employee started up again (she's a teacher and comes in during the summer and over vacations, etc) so we all got shifted around. She went to my computer, I moved to Napoleon Dynamite's (I forget whether I'd mentioned the fact that he is alarmingly Napoleon-like) and he moved into the office w/ the crankiest, most difficult/obnoxious/irritating person in the office, which I found HIGHLY amusing! They've had some choice moments, actually! Actually, I'd forgotten entirely that Napoleon was even there. He's been pretty quiet lately, other than the occasional emergence, which always results in some oddity or other. Like once, someone else popped into their office to get something off Cranky's desk (he was on vacation for the week) and mentioned something about a fly on the desk, so Napoleon comes lumbering out chasing it down swatting at it was a giant three-ring binder. It was a sight!...OOOOHHH! Then, this random person upstairs is leaving, and the teacher and I were asked if we wanted to go to her going-away luncheon. Since neither of us know her, we passed, but Napoleon was also asked (just to be polite, since it happened to be one of the rare times he'd emerged doing something quasi-useful) and he said YES!!! WTF?!?!?! He doesn't know any of them! He's going to go out to lunch w/ a dozen 30-somethings that he's never met. How odd! And he doesn't drive, so he's going to have to bum a ride off one of them too. How I'd love to be a fly on the wall that afternoon!!!
OOOOOHHHHH!!!! And MLP's bro is retiring, and we're "invited" to his soiree(how do you spell that anyway??) I guess she showed up at his promotion, so maybe she’ll be there?? It should be kind of fun anyway.
Hmmm…what else? OOOOHHHH! Your stalker! Unfortunately, I have zero advice for you there, never having had a stalker myself. Is he a kiwi?...I’m sorry to hear he’s tainting your Music Industry class. I’d be pissed. It’s one thing to have an annoying creep following you, but when it comes to tainting something enjoyable…that’s just not cool.
This should keep you amused for a while! I’ll talk to ya later!!!
All your classes sound really cool; I can definitely understand why your 3-hour classes fly by. I usually take boring classes (my school doesn't have the best selection and we don't have any film classes), so I was just picturing some of mine in which I can't even last an hour! And I never had block scheduling. I'm afraid I'll have to teach in a school that uses block scheduling and won't know what to do with myself. I was always perfectly content with my 40-minute classes!
Yay for Napoleon moving! He sounds like quite a character.
That's exciting about going to MLP's bro's soiree; it would be really cool if she showed up. You'll have to report back on that.
My stalker is Maori, which is the aboriginal population here in New Zealand. Luckily he's easing up a bit. I think one of my flatmates scared him when he called (I make them answer the phone and tell him I'm not here). Matt, my flatmate, was really rude when he was talking to the guy; I almost felt bad for him while I was listening to Matt talk. So now he's calling less because I think he's scared of who will answer the phone! Seeing him in class is pretty bad because he's still really clingy, but I'm hoping it'll just fade away after a while if I keep ignoring him and keep mentioning my boyfriend.
Hey all! I swear I'm alive! (Barely.) Really early call times and really late wrap times (plus a minimal turnaround time) have prevented me from even turning on the pooter for the last few days! Movie wraps next Friday, but I'm in studio tomorrow and on a different set next week too (and doing the pharmacy job this weekend) so my feet hurt and I'm mentally and physically burned out. Will get caught up on the novel-sized posts in a bit! I just needed to boot up the comp and see what I've missed!
Ooooh, I don't think you've missed much...just me recounting my (numerous) woes. Nothing of particular interest, I must say.
I got a call back from New Line yesterday (while I was grocery shopping) so I'll have to call back this morning...though I've listened to the message a few times and I can't make out the woman's name (and she says it twice!) I sent out my application to Conan, and I found a great internship for a production company on Broadway. College credit, $100/week stipend (not much, but considering most don't pay anything, I'd take it!), PLUS free tix to shows! I think they provided a MetroCard too. Geez, it'd be worth it just for the tix/MetroCard!
Guess that's about it. Sorry you've been run ragged, Tiff. Do pop in sometime and keep us posted w/ what's up. What was that nonsense on the Bitches thread about "maybe see you in October"?!?!?!
Oh, and where the hell is Ellie? And Groupie for that matter? And Jez? I don't think we ever got a blow by blow review of that concert.
Alright back to work...gotta figure out what the hell that woman's name was and call New Line Cinema back too. Nervous, nervous, nervous!!!
ETA: I just saw your reply, Elphie...Good to know the stalker's easing up a bit. I guess it's kind of nice to have some flatmates there to watch your back (even if it did come off a bit harsh). Not much else new to report. Though the 1/2 million are driving me nuts! I've typed "STAFF" so many times it's made me come to the conclusion that it's a really funny looking word. STAFF. I don't know why, but try typing it 20,000 times, and you'll begin to find it an odd looking word, I promise! Oh, and I've suddenly found my fingers typing "CO CO" instead of "CO XO" which I've begun to find highly amusing. Thank god it's Friday. If this is all it takes to get me all punchy, it's seriously a sad state of affairs!
EATA: I've got in interview on Tuesday w/ New Line...AAAHHH!!! I've also sent in my resume, etc for that Broadway gig (alas, no MetroCard...guess that was a different internship).
OOOHHH!!! Just got called by the Broadway folks (like 5 minutes after emailing my cover letter/res!!!) Tuesday's going to be VERY busy! Two interviews and C,S,&N!!! Wish me luck ladies! I'll need it!
Gotta go to the mall and get some shoes tonight. All I have are sandals w/ me! Oops!
GOOD LUCK, Mabs! Though I'm sure you won't need it. All your prospects sound like so much fun, too!
Sorry they're keeping ya busy, Tiff. It's good to know you're still alive, though!
OH. MY. GOD.
I think I may be awarded Dolt of the Year. My Crosby, Stills, & Nash concert is in progress as I type. Stupid. Stupid. Stupid!!!
I was going w/ the person I'm living w/ for the summer and another friend, and the friend I'm living w/ bought the tix. Since they weren't technically "my" tickets, I didn't do my obsessive checking/fondling/oogling of the tix (I think you know what I mean, Tiff...Miss Sleeps w/ the U2 Tix Under Her Pillow). So, when she changed her flight plans for her return from the business trip she's on, so she'd be back Tuesday morning "for the concert," I assumed that was really when the concert was. I'm such an idiot! I sent the other friend an email about my interviews (I was SO proud of myself, scheduling everything so it would all fit neatly into one day's jaunt into the city), she wrote back saying "isn't it Monday?" I just said no, it's Tuesday, and I didn't even look at the tix this weekend. *headdesk* How could I not even LOOK?!?!?!? Then, to add insult to injury, when I came home from work today for lunch, I grabbed the tix and put them by the bag that I'm bringing tomorrow, and since she's got tix for a couple of plays on the same table, I had to physically look at the tix to make sure they were CSN. I didn't look at the date though!!! ARG! So then, I took a shower, getting out a few minutes before 8, and I looked at the tix (my obsessive checking/fondling/oogling instinct finally kicking in...pity it was TOO LATE! Monday Aug. 1, 2005!!! SH*T! SH*T! SHIIIIIIIITTTTT!!! ROW C!!!! ROW C!!!! Probably the best seats I'll ever have for a concert. *headdesk*
Yeah, this was the self-esteem boost I needed before going on those interviews tomorrow! Mabel, you are a fool!
*off to have a drink*
Oh no!!! I'm so sorry, that's awful, Mabs! I can't imagine how pissed you must be. So none of you ended up making it to the concert?
My family did something like that when we saw The Producers. It was a Tuesday show, and it started at 7:00pm, but no one looked at the tickets. My parents assumed it started at 8, and I assumed that they had actually confirmed that by looking at the tickets. So we get to the theater around 7:45 and were confused to find the lobby completely empty except for a couple of ushers who were not happy that we were arriving when we were. I was pretty mad. It was when Matthew and Nathan returned to the show, so it had been hard to get tickets. I had already seen it before, with the OBC, so missing the first 45 minutes shouldn't really have mattered to me. Anyway, I guess that's not nearly as bad as your missing that concert. I'm sorry! I hope you've recovered in time to ace your interviews tomorrow!
Oh, I've recovered...I think I was more pissed at being so stupid (not looking at the tix) than I was at missing the concert...though they were going to be AMAZING seats! *sigh*
When I ushered at Arturo Ui, we started at 7:30 every night (since it was a long-ish show)...we had a lot of angry people who showed up at quarter-of or so and weren't allowed in until a break in the action.
Off to take a quick shower and get ready to leave. Should be an interesting day!
Figured I'd post my interview report...just 'cause.
The interviews went alright. The first one was for New Line Cinema, and I left feeling like I was qualified, but didn't give the best impression at the interview. I'm not very good at interviews, and I haven't really had to do many. I've only done two others (last year) other than college interviews. One of them went (just) OK, and the other one (the last one I did last fall) went really well. It was over an hour and we just chatted up a storm (it was for the Production Office at One Life to Live) but it didn't work out because I could only do one day a week. ANYWAY, I left New Line feeling like "I should have said this and that," etc. It was just a lot of "What can you bring to New Line," "What do you want to get out of this internship," "Explain one strenght and weakness you have," etc. I hate those types of generic questions. The OLTL interview that went so well started out having me fill out a 3 page survey about the last 5 movies I've seen, CDs I bought, concerts I went to, favorite TV shows, celebs, etc....that gave us something to talk about, which eventually led into the actual interview-type questions...It wasn't a collosal disaster or anything, but I think I had way more "umms" and "ahhhhhs" in there than I would have liked.
I did much better at the HHC (Broadway Marketing) interview in the afternoon, but even though that went better, I feel like I'm not in any way qualified to work at a marketing firm. It seemed like it would be a really cool place to work. It's a tiny office, and it was SUPER laid back. They had me fill out a questionnaire, which included a section where I had to (in 40 words or less) write a personal ad, which "displayed my wit and charm" and a list of 8 celebs to rank in the order I'd boot them off on Celeb Survivor. They also asked a Broadway show that I loved and one that I thought was horrible. I put Prymate down as the horrible one and when the interviewer came back, he gave me a business card and "a gift" on the back...it was a magazine clipping of a picture from Prymate! He asked for it back though (I guess it was from his Board of Shame or something). It was this guy and his summer intern, and they had me "play a game" where they pitched an idea for an off-Broadway show, and I had to tell them where I'd go and how I'd promote it w/ very little money. I think I gave them all the "right" answers, but the way they asked questions in between my responses, there really wasn't any way not to give the answers they were looking for.
So that's that. Hopefully I'll get one of them. HHC would be nice for the comp'd tix. Oh, and HHC also does the marketing campaigns for Kahlua!!! I wonder if I could get free samples?!?! I thoroughly enjoyed my little bottled Mudslides this weekend! MMMMMMmmmmmmm!!!!!
I'm sure the interviews went better than you think. Everyone always thinks of things they should have said once they leave, so if you were able to provide somewhat coherent responses, that's a good thing in my book! I've only had one job interview before (for the camp I worked at the past few summers), and it was basically just a fun conversation about kids. I would fail miserably at the ones you went through. I would hate being put on the spot like that. I'm not creative enough to write a personal ad in a restricted amount of time! Sounds like either one would be great if you got it. When do you find out? At least the interviews are out of your way now!
And I know you're not 21 yet, missy! tsk tsk
I miss this thread so much!!
1. Mabs, I actually cringed when I read your story about missing the concert. I honestly think I would have cried for about an hour if I had done that, more so from the circumstances that caused me to miss it over anything else! Aww, I'm sowwy. I had empathy pains when I read it.
2. Congrats on your interviews! Working for New Line would be AMAZING! How did Conan pan out? You know, some time this month is when SNL accepts applications and distributes their tickets for the season, so now might be a good time to stick in a resume to intern there as well. (Unless your Conan resume goes towards a general NBC database, which I doubt.) How about Hope & Faith?
3. I'm PAing for "She's The Man" again on Saturday (last day of filming!) but I'm looking to be a personal assistant for a director, producer or actor for any of the upcoming movies in Vancouver. I'm regretting not applying to assist for Lucy Liu or Liz Hurley (or HUGH!!!). I don't know how to even start or get into that part of the industry - I don't think any ol' Joe can apply and be hired, can they??
Anyway, I'm thinking I won't be able to buy my ticket to NYC until thge beginning of September - I hate leaving these things to the last minute, but the parents are already less than impressed with PAing and everything that doesn't have to do with my academic future, so dropping a grand to go to NYC might make them hit the roof.
Oh, what to say, what to say??
I guess there's going to be a PBS special in September about the history of protest music, featuring interviews w/ Bono, among many others. Sounded pretty interesting...figured I should get aroung to posting something U2 related!!!
The interviews went ok, I guess, and I suppose you always leave thinking that you could have said something or other that would have left a better impression. What can you do?
Tiff, I'm sorry to hear about all the craziness w/ work, having to pay your share of your vacation, etc. And it's a pisser to hear that your folks aren't taking to your PAing. It gets to a point though, where you've got to do what you want. If you want to stick w/ that in hopes that you could move a notch up and work being an assistant to an actor/director/producer, or finding some other job in film, then go for it. Not to get overly personal, but both of my parents a sick of their jobs and hate having to drag themselves to work everyday, and I just sat through an entire day listening to a coworker bitching about how awful her current situation at work is and how much she can't stand being there. It's totally not worth it living that way. Sure, you're bound to pay your dues doing something you don't like, but it's not worth getting stuck doing something for years, decades even, that you don't find interesting or rewarding, or w/o some redeeming qualities.
Hmmm...guess that's about it. Oh, and Elphie, I deem myself close enough to the big 2-1. I'm only a couple of months away...and I love me some Kahlua!!! Had to treat myself to a Mudslide when I discovered the ticket fiasco. Ugh. After a good freak out (including somewhere in the ballpark of an hour of tears, Tiff!) I think I've gotten over it. I refuse to look up the setlist though! And at least it wasn't C,S,N& YOUNG!!! I think the water works would still be in full force 2 days later.
Nothin' else from me...other than the fact that I'm significantly bummed out that The Pillowman is closing Sept. 18th. I have to see it again...and I think I'll bring some footwear...shhhhh!
Later ladies! Keep us posted about October, Tiff. I hope you catch a good deal on a flight...keep checking, maybe you'll be able to find a reasonable window in there somewhere?? I hope, I hope, I hope!!!
Day-umm, it has been a hell of a long time since I've posted.
Hi!!
It's been nuts. Lots of auditions (finally dragging myself from under my rock since moving back to CA), my car was STOLEN from right in front of my house, adopted a new doggy (flew cross country to bring her home w/ me!)...so it's been a while. But I've missed you gals! (I've only caught up on this page, so if I miss some stuff...sorry, I'll try to catch up.)
Tiff, loving the Malfoy, sr. avatar...the PAing sounds great!
Mabs, glad that sir-creeps-a-lot was moved, and VERY sorry about the missed concert! BUMMER!!
Elphie, I had several 3 hour classes in grad school, and they were either fabulous or torturous--it totally depends on the subject and the professor. Good luck!
So...something U2-related. I was cast in a children's theatre natl. tour. Good news, yes? *BUT*.....it may mean I miss the Vegas concert. (GULP) I still might make it, it will depend on the tour dates and where I am and if I can fly out of there....keeping fingers crossed!!!
Oh, and after my car was found in TIJUANA with basically nothing but the metal holding it together (they stripped EVERYTHING) the good news was that my insurance determined a cash value like, 4 times higher than I thought I'd get for it (it was 11 years old.) so now I will get something else and pay off some credit cards. Not that I recommend having your car stolen, but...Yay!
Oh, and Tiff....yep, you must have missed all the commotion on the main board, but Ana Gasteyer is playing Elphaba in Chicago and getting seriously kickas$ reviews--some saying the best one yet. Some great pics on the site--seems like she's more of the Margaret Hamilton-style wicked witch.
Groupie, it's great to hear from you! I'm so sorry about your car being stolen, but it sounds like it turned out to be a pretty good deal for you! Is that your new dog in your avatar? If so, it's adorable! (it's adorable even if it's not your new dog, actually).
Congrats on being cast in the children's theatre national tour! You've seen U2 so many times that I guess it wouldn't be ssoooo bad to miss the Vegas show, right?? But I'll keep my fingers crossed for you being able to make it.
Mabs, I was just giving you a hard time, I would have busted out the alcohol as well if I were you. I find it really strange here that I can actually purchase booze legally, it was a bit of a thrill at first (but now I'm used to it).
I'm sad about The Pillowman closing, too; I won't get to see it again now. I would have liked to. Now I'm really glad we went when we did!
So let me tell y'all about my theatre dilemna. I desperately want to see "See What I Wanna See." It closes November 20th. I get back November 18th. That means I have to see it on the 19th or the 20th (if I were able to see it on the 20th, I would go straight to the U2 concert afterwards! What a day that would be). But I'm afraid I won't be able to get tickets to either of those days. Arg. I just feel like complaining, I don't expect anyone to have any solutions or sympathy. I'm a bit of an Idina freak, and I'm missing some of her concerts, the Rent performance in Bryant Park today, etc. so it's really bugging me.
Elphie, it sounds like you just turned 21? HAPPY DAY!!!!!
It is not my new doggie, but my old doggie--my 12 year old rescue boy Mattie--thanks! He is a funny little guy. Since you're an Idina freak, I'm sure you're watching the Today Show tomorrow? RENT performance....very excited!!
I just finished reading the ENTIRE HARRY POTTER THREAD. I swear that took like, 3 hours! Whew!
Nope, Groupie, I've still got a few weeks to go 'til I turn 21, but I'm in New Zealand now and the drinking age is 18 here.
And I will not be watching The Today Show tomorrow because we don't get it in New Zealand. I'm bummed about missing it but my mom has graciously agreed to tape it for me (and to keep a running tape of Rent appearances).
Mattie is adorable!
I admire you for reading the whole Harry Potter thread, I only made it through a few pages!
Just a quikcie...so I don't forget. Elph, isn't the U2 concert you're going to on November 22nd (you sold your 21st one for the 22n't right?) Ssooooo, I guess at least you wouldn't have to worry about having a crazy long day...I would highly recommend getting tix AS SOON as they go on sale (whenever that may be)...I suppose there's always a possibility that they'd extend, but who wants to take that risk?
A quick "hi" to groupie. SO sorry that your car was stolen, but it sounds like you made out like a bandit! Pun obviously intended! We had a car stolen a few years ago...sucked that it was not only the car, but A BUNCH of stuff in the trunk at the time, like hundreds and hundreds of dollars worth. I think we ended up getting it back pretty quickly, before it was stripped, somewhere in Mass. Twas still a pisser, and I can't imagine what a violation that must have felt like right in front of your home!!!
What's your new doggie's name? Pop a picture on sometime if you can, so we can all go "aaaawwwww"!!!!
Okay, not so short at all...did any of you really think it would be??
Oh, not done yet...Elphie, I'm sure I'll hear ya in 2 months after I can "legally" buy liquor. I expect the novelty to burn off really quickly. Really, I'm just excited for deals! I looove a good sale, so happy hour will be fun, fun, fun! Oh, and meals and whatnot that include a drink. I pop by The Riviera Cafe (NY's Red Sox bar...YAY!) for brunch every now and then, and it comes w/ 2 drinks. "Yeah, I'll just have a diet Coke." Aaaannnyway, that's really it this time. Bye!
My concert is actually on the 21st; I don't know why I was thinking the 20th. I wanted to trade it for the 22nd but haven't been able to, so as of now I'm going on the 21st and am going to try the box office on the 22nd. 2 nights in a row of U2 wouldn't be so bad! Anyway, you're right in saying that it wouldn't be on the same day as "See What I Wanna See." Even if I could get tickets to that. I'll by trying the second they go on sale (if I could only figure out when that is).
Hmmm...for some reason, I thought you did find a trade for your 21st ticket. Guess not.
I'll drop you a PM if I happen to see anything about "See What I Wanna See" and tix going on sale. Though, I'm sure when the info comes out, it'll be ALL OVER the main board.
I went in late to work today so I could watch RENT on the Today Show. How bad is that?!?! I could have just taped it, but...nah! It was pretty good. I was surprised Adam and Anthony did "What You Own." I thought I read somewhere they were doing "Take Me or Leave Me," but I guess that was at Bryant Park. Adam's super short hair doesn't really do much for me. I guess it's better than the shaggy look (though I don't think that's as bad as most people make it out to be...MUCH better than the flat-ironed look he was sporting at his Civilian concerts last year, imho!) Anthony Rapp is too cute. I enjoy him! Guess that's about it...I know your folks were taping it, but I think there were some links over on the main board. Were you able to watch them online? I wish they'd shown something substantial from the movie. They showed a few seconds while Kaite Couric was introducing them, but that was about it (that I saw, at least).
Nope, I never found a trade for my ticket. But I don't mind going twice, and I think I'll be able to get a ticket at the box office on the 22nd based on what happened at MSG in May (they sold thousands that day). That is, if I have any money left. I'm not making any and I'm spending it pretty quickly over here, so we'll see!
I've read about the Today Show performance but haven't watched it. It takes my computer, like, 5 minutes just to load a page, it's so slow. And when I downloaded the Alanis concert, it took me about 3 weeks total because each song took FOREVER. It would take days to download any video clips. And my flatmates wouldn't be happy because we all share the internet, and it goes through the phone line so nobody can use the phone, etc. So I'll have to wait until I get home, when I'll get to watch all the Rent tv appearances from August-November! I'll have a marathon. I looked at a few pictures and I LOVE Adam's hair. I really don't like it long. So I'm happy it's short now.
I'm bored, so I decided to post a picture. Here's Adam's hair last October, just as it was starting to get long. It wasn't so bad at this point, but I still like it better as it is now.
Updated On: 8/4/05 at 08:56 PM
Booo...it didn't work! Is it flat-ironed??
ETA: Oooh, works now. That's much better than the totally over done flat-ironed look he was sporting when I saw him at Joe's Pub. It was pretty bad!
hm...does it work now? I don't think it's flat-ironed.
Yep! I edited my last post! What a cute picture!!!
YAY...scraping the bottom of the barrel for U2-related stuff!!!
Not really a spoiler, because really, they're going to play One at every show!
From interference's setlist party for today's show:
One / Everybody Hurts (Snippet) (vor One begrüsst Bono Quincey Jones, als einen, von dem er viel gelernt habe, und Bono nennt ihn einen "sexy motherF*CKer")
I don't know why, but this struck me as highly amusing! Maybe that's just because it is now after 6, and I'm still at work. UGH!
