My responses:
1. U2 Song and CD you didn't like at first but eventually grew on you. 'Miracle Drug'. I just didn't find the tune very compelling, and it sounded repetitive, but after I read the CD booklet and the lyrics for the first time, I realized how powerful and emotional the words and the message is, and now I like it a lot.
As for CD, All That You Can't Leave Behind has grown on me. I would go so far as to say it's now my favorite U2 CD of the new millenium (not like there's many options).
2. Least favorite song/CD. Well, there's quite a few unmemorable songs, so if I narrow this down to their singles, I would have to say 'The Hands That Built America'. It just doesn't do anything for me (followed closely by 'Discotheque'). And CD...well, Pop. (Duh.) I'll admit 'Staring At The Sun' is a nice listen if you haven't heard it in a long time, though.
3. Song cover you WISH they would do. Hmm...that's a hard one. Probably something from the Beatles...
4. Top 3 songs you're looking most forward to seeing come the NYC concerts in the fall! I Will Follow (PLEASE HAPPEN! PLEASE!), Walk On, and maybe Numb? (Like that'll ever happen.)
4. Prediction: Will there be a new CD out as early as next year? If so, will it equal HTDAAB, or be better/worse in terms of fan, critical and retail success? I doubt it. But if it's true, I expect it won't be as successful as HTDAAB, although there may be one or two fairly successful singles. There is such thing as over-saturation. Do they REALLY want to make another CD after doing 48 legs of the Vertigo tour? (Well, it seems that way!)
6. Why do we keep coming back to this thread after Mabel suggested over 2 months ago that we let it die? Because you all love me. That's why. And because Mabel's employers don't know how much she procrastinates at work. That's about 90% of the reason as well!
One more post...
Post 3000!//
Holy poop, I FINALLY ventured onto the Tour section on Interference (I haven't been there since U2 opened in Brussels!) and they said there was a short snippet of 'Enter Sandman' at one of the recent Euro concerts! *creams* I have to admit, I'm a bit of a Metallica fan as well, and the Black Album is one of my faves. So now I'm changing my answer - if I wanted U2 to cover another song, it would probably be a Metallica one if not a Beatles one.
And with that, I'm off! (I'm poopizzled after looking for all those photos! Bet yer pooters took FOREVER to load with all them pikchers, right?)
1. U2 Song and CD you didn't like at first but eventually grew on you:
OK, this is embarassing, but I didn't used to like Bad. *hides in shame* I used to roll my eyes and go "ech, this damn so is SO LOOOOOONG!" but it has since more than grown on me. I've come to realize what a genius epic song it is, and I shall be weeping like a baby if I don't hear it in October...For variety, I used to really like Miracle Drug, but now I'm kind of sick of it. Wouldn't bother me at all if they dropped it for, say, Crumbs on the 3rd leg. Doubt that'll happen though.
Album: Zooropa, I guess. I'd always kind of written it off as an album that I didn't really need, but since Jez sent me a copy, I'm really loving it!
2. U2 Song and CD you dislike the most.
I also dislike HTBA. I think we had a poll about songs that we wanted to hear live and others we didn't and that was the one on my didn't want to hear list. I didn't mind the snippet in BTBS, but it just doesn't do it for me...Album? I guess Pop.
3. Song cover you WISH they would do.
Hmmm...I don't know. Something silly like Elton John's The Bitch is Back. Weren't there rumors about them rehearsing Wake Me Up Before You Go Go?? I wouldn't want it cluttering up a concert that I'm at, but that would be hilarious!
4. Top 3 songs you're looking most forward to seeing come the NYC concerts in the fall!
3 Realistic Songs: Bad, Gloria, WGRYWH
3 Not-so-realistic Songs: Seconds, Fast Cars, One Tree Hill
5. Prediction: Will there be a new CD out as early as next year? If so, will it equal HTDAAB, or be better/worse in terms of fan, critical and retail success?
I don't think they'll pull another Zooropa and put together an album while they're still touring. It's tough to say how it'll be. I wish they'd just say F*CK it to critical acclaim and release an album that doesn't strive to be a huge critical/commercial success. After listening to some of the alternate versions of Bomb, I wish they'd release something more along those lines. Having "Native Son" instead of "Vertigo," the alt. version of "All Because of You," "Fast Cars"/"Xanex and Wine" etc. I think they need a shift in scope or something.
6. Why do we keep coming back to this thread after Mabel suggested over 2 months ago that we let it die?
Because you all love me so much, you can't resist coming here and basking in my glory...Seriously though, for a while there, Elphie and I were giving this thread pity bumps from page 10, and it really was looking kind of bleak. Glad to see we're still alive and kicking though!
Edited to change Ultraviolet to One Tree Hill...what was I thinking?!?!?
1. U2 Song and CD you didn't like at first but eventually grew on you. Song:'The Sweetest Thing'. Man I hated it when it first got radio airplay and now I don't immediately change it when it comes on. CD: I honestly can't think of one that I didn't like right out of the box.
2. Least favorite song/CD. Song: The Sweetest Thing. Album: I suppose Pop, but I don't dislike any of them really.
3. Song cover you WISH they would do. That's a toss up between "Blue Monday" and "How Soon is Now"
14. Top 3 songs you're looking most forward to seeing come the NYC concerts in the fall! I'm gonna cop out and say, "Sunday Bloody Sunday," dreaming for "Dancing Barefoot" and I am really excited to see MSG.
5. Prediction: Will there be a new CD out as early as next year? I doubt it.
6. Why do we keep coming back to this thread after Mabel suggested over 2 months ago that we let it die? Hey, I'm new here so how the hell should I know?
I just discovered I've misplaced my Achtung Baby CD. (I brought the case all jazzed to listen to it in the car, and it was empty!) I'm about to light my hair on fire. I don't know where it is! That poor, poor CD, left somewhere without any protection and no where to be found!
Oh, Tiff! That sounds remarkably like something I would do! I can make you a copy if you'd like...though I don't think I'll be getting it to you any time soon. I still have your DVDs! *hides in shame*
Did you end up going to Washington today?
ETA: HOORAY!!! I sold my Rolling Stones ticket for $80! It was a $65 ticket, so I'll take it! I was so paranoid about taking a loss on it! I also paid for my own ticket w/ my little side wheeling and dealing. So, YAY!!!
1. U2 Song and CD you didn't like at first but eventually grew on you.
*bops mabel on the head for not immediately seeing the genius of the best song ever*
Let's see...for the album, I would honestly have to say Boy. The first time I heard it I thought it was a little hard to wrap my head around.
A song is trickier...I'll say Miss Sarajevo. I absolutely love that song now, but I think it took me a few listens to really fall in love with it.
2. U2 Song and CD you dislike the most.
CD- I'll follow the trend and go with Pop.
song- I realld don't know! I'm not crazy about Discotheque.
3. Song cover you WISH they would do.
This is a really difficult one. Lemme think on it.
4. Top 3 songs you're looking most forward to seeing come the NYC concerts in the fall!
I can't pick three!
Bad
With or Without You
Numb (I can dream)
5. Prediction: Will there be a new CD out as early as next year? If so, will it equal HTDAAB, or be better/worse in terms of fan, critical and retail success?
No, there won't.
6. Why do we keep coming back to this thread after Mabel suggested over 2 months ago that we let it die?
Because mabel only suggested that in a moment of weakness and we love this thread!
I have lost more CDs than I care to remember - I'm too lazy for my own good - I would rather just toss it to the side or leave it on top of the CD player rather than make the effort to put it back in it's case, so I've had quite a few unpleasant surprises too! Commiserations...
I suppose I'd better do that questionnaire if I want to earn my stripes!
Oooooooh, I know somethin' that Elphie and the gang don't know. I know somethin' that Elphie and the gang don't knoooooowww.
Too bad, I'm not gonna tell ya!
Anyway, now that I've got that out of my system...did you get anything from that guy who was giving away DVDs? I saw he said he sent you one, and I was wondering what you got. I guess my DVD came today.
Me? No, he didn't send me a dvd. He offered to do a B+P of Around the Elevation tour, but it's too complicated for me to do that from here so I declined.
(1) U2 Song and album that you didn't like at first but grew on you -
It took me a while to really appreciate Walk On for whatever reason, but now it's one of my favourites. As for album, I suppose maybe Pop, although there are some great tunes on that. What's wrong with Discotheque, anyway? I love it!
(2) U2 song and album you dislike the most -
Song - probably New Years Day...my head tells me it's a great song, but my heart just doesn't like it - something in my subconscious connects it to unpleasantness, don't ask me why!
Album - I love them all, so this is a tough one. Pop is the easy answer, but...Pop!
(3) Song cover you wish they would do -
Fun question! Something out of the ordinary, maybe Vogue or Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend. And we've already had a Beatles cover at Live8, remember?
(4) Top 3 songs you're looking forward to in NYC this fall -
Well I won't be there unfortunately, much as I'd love to be, but if I *were* to see them again, I'd have to hear With or Without You, Pride and One.
(5) New album next year?
I doubt it, unless maybe a live one? You never know though !
(6) Why do we keep coming back to this thread after Mabel wanted it to die?
Because it's fun, and it fills time when we're bored...and where else would you get such gems as 'Alan Alda/Rickman = sex'?
And mabel, I'm disappointed in you!
Moi?!? Oh, Jez. I think I'm going to have to run away and cry in a corner, dejected and alone!
I love Walk On too...Such a pisser that it didn't make an appearance on this tour. What a great closer it was on Elevation.
And I don't know what the animosity towards Discotheque is around here. I think it's good campy fun (how fab is the video?!?! Larry is so "I DO NOT WANT TO BE HERE!" I can't help but laugh out loud everytime I watch it. I think I'll have to make Tiff a Best of Discotheque CD. If I really cared, I'd have to pick up the single that has like 5 different mixes. Actually, I almost did. Ask Elphie! They had it at a used record store in the city, and I came this close to grabbing it. It was going to be your birthday present, Tiff...Oops, I ruined it.
Oh and I must agreee that I think the Alan Alda=Sex was a high (or maybe more of a low) point on the thread. I was laughing my ass off the other day!
Aw, I'm not really disappointed in you! But how come you wanted it to die? All U2-ed out?
Yep, the vid for Discotheque is hilarious. And it has a great guitar riff, so all in all - great!
And happy birthday, Tiff!
Well, there was a spell there where Elphie and I would give the thread a pity bump every now and then, when it was on page 10 (or something equally pathetic) and I was starting to think we'd run our course w/ the 1st leg being done and everything, so in a moment of weakness I suggested we let it die. Thankfully, they'd have none of it...good thing too, because this summer has been excruciatingly boring, and it's been nice having stuff like...ooooohhhh, Alan Alda=Sex to keep things interesting.
I love the Discotheque video! Edge is such a beast! The Boom-Cha's are so F*CKing hilarious!!!
Oh, and Tiff's birthday isn't until October. It was going to be a little project on my part. I was going to use all the various recorded versions and mixes and a few choice life versions, but alas, I'm way too lazy for that! I tried making an acoustic mix CD, and I spent so damn much time on it, only to up screwing it up on track 18 or something...and it sounded like crap, because it had those damn gaps between the tracks. I scrounged. I found quality acoustic versions of songs, and by "quality" I mean quasi-interesting, not implying sound quality! Acoustic All Because of You from some apple launch and New York, New York. *sigh* It was a good idea in theory. This is what happens when I have a boring summer job and no direct access to a car. Very sad indeed!
Well you need to fill your time somehow! Good idea, though - unique sorta Now That's What I Call Acoustic!
By the way, what did you make of the Franz Ferdinand album? I've been listening to it a lot recently as I'm seeing them on Wednesday - can't wait!
Hey all! I'm back here for a quick minute (will be back longer in a mo' - I just gosta start boiling cabbage for dinner! ) - Jez, you still need to fill out the ORIGINAL questionnaire from the last page or two! (Again, bonus points if you say Zooropa was from the pre-Boy era!)
Be back in a sec!
I'm loving Franz Ferdinand. Thanks so much!!! I almost bought tix to see them at The Theatre at MSG in October, but I just couldn't afford the $50 that the tix would be w/ all the fees and stuff. I've got 5 concerts in about a month's time and I just couldn't swing it. Maybe they'll release some as it gets closer and I'll have saved up some cash by then. I'd really love to see them, but $50 does kind of seem a bit much. It would have kicked so much ass if they'd opened in the States.
There are just too many concerts in September/October. I've already got tix for 5, and I'm planning on camping out to at least listen to Jack Johnson and Arcade Fire in Central Park, and I'd love to see McCartney, Elton John, Franz Ferdinand, The Killers, and then there are 4 concerts on Staten Island w/ some great bands on October 1st and 2nd. I'm sure there are others I'm forgetting too...just too many in such a short period of time. Spread the wealth people!
Yeah, I think I paid about 50 Euros - but that includes Scissor Sisters and Maroon 5 as well, so I'm sure it'll be worth it! Well, maybe not so much Maroon 5...
Oh, I think that's totally worth it, Jez. Though it would have been nice if Maroon 5 was swapped out for someone else. There's always gotta be one!
When does the new Franz Ferdinand CD come out? Sometime in September, right? I'll definitely have to pick it up!
*ahem* Jez...the questionnaire??
Luckily for you you've got my husband in your avatar, or I'd boot you right outta here! How the hell was the play? (I'm sure it was fabulous since Chris is like walking sex.) Mmm...
Mabs, that acoustic cd sounds like a good idea! And I understand about all the concerts. There are so many good ones going on at once. That's a lot of money to spend in such a short amount of time! There are more than a few that I would have gone to if I were home (but then again, I would be in Richmond during most of them so I probably wouldn't be able to). Jez, the concert you're seeing sounds great. There are so many amazing artists. I've seen Maroon 5 live (for free, they played at my school before they were really big) and I thought they weren't bad.
May I rant? (Even if you say no, I'm going to anyway). I’ve been having an existential crisis lately, and I don’t really have anyone to talk to about it. I think I have too much time to think here, and I miss the U.S., and I’ve been moody lately. You don’t have to read this if you don’t want to. It’s long and boring and pretty deep.
I’ve recently been reconsidering what I want to do with my life. For as long as I can remember, I’ve wanted to be a teacher. I’m an English major/education minor/history minor, and I’ve always planned on leaving school with my teaching certificate and teaching high school English. For the first time, I’m having second thoughts. Thinking about being cooped up in a classroom all day teaching the same lessons over and over to different classes makes me wonder if that’s what I’m meant to do. I don’t even think I’m that good of an English major, because sometimes I get frustrated when we pick apart books too much and read into things that I doubt were intended; I mostly enjoy the stories. I know there are aspects of teaching that I would love. I love books and reading, and sharing that excitement with others would be great. But I also love theatre, and I’m wondering what it might be like to make a career out of it. I’m not even sure exactly what I would do specifically, and I know it would be much less stable than having a job as a teacher. But I’ve been researching graduate programs in NYC and it just seems so interesting and appealing to me. Of course more school costs money, and if I were to teach, I would be able to start working and making money right away. I tend to have these whims and passing fixations with certain things, and I don’t know if this is one of them, so I’m just letting myself ruminate on this idea. But it’s really getting to me. I’m thinking about changing my whole future and abandoning this idea of what I’ve wanted to do my whole life. So I’m stressed. Anyone have any comforting thoughts? Anyone actually make it to this point? If so, you deserve a cookie.
Hey...saw that you're still on, so I've got to catch up on your existential rant and I'll get back to you...didn't want you to run away while I delved into that novel thinking nobody was around to comment!
Aw, thanks. I gotta go to class now though, so I'll give you time to read!
