Seeing is Believing from ASPECTS OF LOVE
Anytime is a girl's song. BoCo did Elegies this year and maybe they changed it but I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be for a female...maybe thats why Liz Callaway sings Sailing. Miscast concerts are the best!!!
Because of Infinite Joy's success, I would say "Anytime" is becoming more and more of a boys song rather than a girls. Norm Lewis's version is far more popular than the Elegies version, and ESPECIALLY because of Benj Pasek and Jake Wilson's version on YouTube last year, I would say it most people know it as a male song these days.
This is true. It's a beautiful song either way...a little long...but fantastic. Elegies is an incredible show. The song Goodbye/Finale is....the most beautiful thing ever. Youtube boston conservatory elegies and it should come up. Ugh. Loves.

Who cares if a Tenor can sing a song...the original poster asked for tenor songs that would blow people away...I'm a lyric tenor but I've sung Being Alive as well. I think I did the song justice, but even so, it is NOT a tenor song, and thus not what the original poster was asking for.
The fact that you use a controlled and "deeper" tone when you sing them BDavis, proves my point. They aren't songs that show off the tenor voice, neither the range or timbre. In fact Being Alive is a Baritone STANDARD.
Running in the Dark, I realize that the typical distinction between baritone and tenor is somewhat skewed in the music theatre world, but regardless I would still consider songs that have at least a decent b to be good songs for a tenor to show off with. Anything that doesn't let the tenor really show off their upper range seems pointless to me, especially if its to be a wailin' blow em' out of the water tenor number.
Basically that rule is if Billy Porter or Darius Dehaas has sung the song, then its a perfect tenor number.

jeez, I haven't even heard of the musical you listed. i'll have to check it out, but don't mention the obscure facts first, it doesn't help a case. it makes you sound desperate.
Songs for a New World is one of the most beautiful shows I have seen, and is actually pretty well known.

Being Alive is a blow em out of the water song no matter if a baritone OR tenor sings it. It's just the style of the song. I'm a tenor and I received a superior rating at GA's thespian conference for singing Being Alive. I apparently blew somebody out of the water...
I think I've heard Anytime sung by pretty much every voice part by now. Also, to stay consistent with the Esparza theme here, I'll throw in Petrified from Taboo. And Run Away With Me (Kerrigan/Lowdermilk) is fantastic too. And of course, there's quite a few in The Last 5 Years.
what do i need with love-tmm
Being Alive is a blow em out of the water song even when Patti or Bernadette sing it. hahaha
Definatly, The Contest from Sweeney Todd.... I mean, think about it.... There's been times where they've had to cast a woman for that part.
I really like 'Moving Too Fast' and 'Shiksa Goddess' from 'The Last Five Years'. I'm a lassie who sings a rather good high soprano, but I've managed to cultivate a rather decent tenor voice (that I've been widely complimented on (if I had a singing teacher, she'd hate me)) singing along to this show.
Actually, here's a tangent for you. When you're singing audition songs, you should really choose a song that matches you. If you're a female teenage soprano, you sing a song suitable for a female teenage soprano, perhaps something from 'Oklahoma!'. If you decide you're going to sing something that's not traditionally associated with your type, you need a damn good reason (for instance, a transposed 'How Glory Goes' from 'Floyd Collins', with the two-part explanation of a) you don't have to be a 38-year old man trapped in a cave to be fearful and accepting of your impending death and b) if it's good enough for Audra McDonald, it's good enough for me).
And also, if you're choosing two audition songs, you should go for contrast. So a nice legit-voice ballad from the Golden Age could be presented against a rockin' belty up-tempo song from something since the '70s but that hasn't been on Broadway in the last five years.
Anyone who's still with me, please ponder this question. If I found an awesome wailing blow-'em-out-of-the-water tenor song that didn't specifically go "HEY! I'M A MAN SINGING A MAN'S SONG!" and had a universal enough theme that I could justify just about anyone singing it (hey, maybe something like 'Being Alive', but a little less overdone), would that be a great idea to contrast a legit-soprano ballad? Or would that be SO contrasty that the auditioners would hate me?
And is it EVER acceptable to present 'Too Many Daves!' by Dr. Seuss as one of your audition monologues?

I would be very careful singing against gender, many panels are not in favour of this. If you do decide to sing a man's song, make sure you have a good reason ready as to why you chose to go against gender (and no, "I really liked the song, it really suits my voice" are not suitable answers. ) It's one thing for a Broadway veteran like Bernadette Peters to decide to do a tenor song on one of her albums, it's another for you to do it for a professional or college audition.
Yeah, that's why I'd only do it with a song that had universal enough themes that I could bull**** a good enough explanation as to why I was totally allowed to sing it. I was just wondering if presenting a pretty, high soprano ballad and a waily tenor (or low alto if I MUSTMUSTMUST stick to women) song would be "oh, there's some extreme contrasting going on there, well done indeed", or if it would be more "why the F*** are you singing that low when you're clearly a soprano, you demented bint?".

LOL. Why are you so against singing women's songs? Haha, just curious. There are LOADS that are really interesting and brilliant, that's why I compiled a 30 odd page list of the rarer and underused ones in my book (So you want to tread the boards). I would really stick to your voice type, by all means show range but it really is impossible to be a sop and alto at the same time. What should matter here is the CHARACTER that you portray in the song - not just the actual sound of your singing.
Wait, this one here?

I love that book. ^_^
Really, it's idle curiosity combined with some issues I have with my voice. I can get good sound of my top range and out of my bottom range, but my break is pitiful. Also, how extreme is *too* extreme when presenting contrast? Nothing more serious than that. ^_^

Haha yes that's the one.
Ah....the break issue...hm. Do you have a voice teacher currently working with you? And what songs do they recommend?
Sadly I don't. I'm relocating soon, so I'll be on the lookout for one when I get to my destination. Generally, I'm most comfortable and make the best sound singing Rodgers & Hammerstein or Gilbert & Sullivan lead soprano stuff. But that's not quite the same as having a singing teacher working with me and making recommendations. XP

um...back on the subject of tenor songs, "giants from the sky" from into the woods is pretty kick butt to me. it might not be exactly what ur looking for, and it's no defying gravity as far as power goes, but it can be a great song once mastered.

I totally agree with RunningInTheDark about "Run Away With Me" The Unauthorized...Samantha Brown.
Also, check out "Flight" by Craig Carnelia.

Youtube "Bring me Giants" It is sung by Brian Crum and is pretty much blow you out of the water. I am not sure if the sheet music is available though. But if it is, this would be amazing if you could pull it off.
