Jesus is symbolic and represents something much greater. So, he looks like whatever you want him to look like. He could be a black woman for all that matters. It doesn't change the significance he represents to hundreds of millions of people (of all faiths and religions)

...and I guess the answer is...whatever you decide he looked like.

my point, JG2, is that it's irrelevant what he looked like. what matters is the life he led and the values, virtues, etc., he espoused. Not if he was white, black, brown, short, or tall.

And it's not irrelevant. The whole point of the Jesus story is that he was a man, whether or not he was also symbolic is different discussion than the one this thread was created for.

However, since it has been decreed that Jesus "looks like whatever you want him to look like" {big gay eye roll}, I shall submit the true image of my Lord and Savior. And I share it happily with the dear friend of us all, SouthFlorida.

The watershed moment in this story's ebbing relevance: Mario Lopez, giggling, as he said "In just a minute, folks, we're gonna talk to Hot Jesus!" The words "Hot Jesus" embossed on the ET screen in a Looney Toons evokes Hell (smoldering font) way. The ever-fawning, dimpled Mr. Lopez interviewing Hot Jesus speaks so eloquently of these troubled times, doesn't it?

Headband, I disagree with you. I think it's fine to imagine God or the Holy Spirit to look like a rainbow tidal wave if that's what brings you peace, but Jesus had human form. Removing faith from the equation, he was a man. He was born of a certain ancestry in a certain place. Imagining him with flowing blonde locks and blue eyes takes away the historic part of his existence. It allows a huge portion of Christians to ignore the fact that their claimed savior strongly resembled the people they are most afraid of.

This statement assumes that what you claim is accurate. I would say it's a small faction of right-wing old school religious zealouts who are "afraid." The most outspoken do not represent Christianity as a whole. In fact, I'd venture to say that the majority of Christians are loving humans who are accepting of all races (and skin colors). Did you even consider the racial breakdown of Christianity and how many minorities account for the total number of practicing Christians in the world before writing this wildly baseless accusation?

Just as violent African-American rioters do not represent all protestors or African-Americans, the same benefit of the doubt should be granted to practicing Christians. A racist, bigoted faction of Christians do not represent the religion as a whole. So, all of that aside, I do agree with the other points in your post.

Have you studied the practice of Christianity? Do you know the demographic breakdown of practicing Christians, and how many of those Christians are of the skin color that JG2 claims many are "afraid" of?

You're right, MM. But I did see a sweeping generalization in her post. I have no tolerance or patience for generalizations of any kind.

Given that Jesus was a “virgin birth”, wouldn’t that mean that he was not biologically related to Joseph (God’s sperm and Mary’s egg) – and possibly not even biologically related to Mary (a miraculous in vitro fertilization with heavenly sperm and egg)? Thus, he would not necessarily look like Mary or Joseph (not being genetically related) – and might not even have looked like the people of that region. Jesus might have looked Han Chinese or Masai or Cherokee. He may have been a giant or a little person. But, given that no one seemed to make note of his unusual appearance, presumably he look like every other person of that region at that time, but who knows? Now, if only there was a strand of Jesus’s hair or a drop of his blood that could be genetically analyzed. I bet he had great genes.
