What is your favorite cocktail and why?

This is for an article that I'm writing for a food and drink magazine, and I'd appreciate any and all responses. I'm trying to get a sample of why people drink what they drink. If you feel like responding, I'd greatly appreciate it.

--What is your favorite cocktail? (Or brand/type of liquor?)
--When did you start drinking it?
--Does this cocktail hold any significant meaning to you?

Any replies are helpful and much appreciated!
"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body

I'm often embarrassed to admit it, but my favorite cocktail is a Malibu bay breeze (Malibu rum, pineapple juice and cranberry juice). I started drinking it when I was about 17 or 18 at an end of summer staff party, and it always makes me think of summer and Bayonne.

(Of course, when I'm out at grown up bars outside of New Jersey, I'll order a vodka cranberry.)

I usually stick to gin and tonics, which were introduced to me by an actor at a theatre festival I was interning at when I was 19 (I didn't start drinking till college). Up till that point, I basically drank whatever was thrust into my hand at a party- but I actually LIKED the gin and tonic the guy made for me. He used some off-brand gin, but since then I've come to like Hendrick's for most of my gin needs.

I've been going with martinis (straight up with a twist) lately, though. I find it's more bang for my buck. I don't think I was ever introduced to them- I just got them because I knew that they existed.

Thanks for your response. Malibu Bay Breeze makes me think of Jersey, too.

Thanks Kad! I'm a martini drinker myself.

Not a cocktail, but I love Baileys. I guess my taste for it began with Baileys cheesecake and Baileys Haagen Daazs...then I moved on to the real thing! Yummy.

I have a couple of seasonal favorites. Gin & tonic does it for me during the summer, but I also like margaritas on the rocks and a classic daiquiri up.

In the fall and winter I'm partial to Manhattans (usually with bourbon, not rye) and sidecars.

And I love gin gimlets year 'round.

Thanks, Reg. Lots of people I've interviewed seem to drink seasonally. I guess I do too. I prefer red wine and rye in the colder months and gin and rose in the summer.

Yes, same principle. I get citrusy and white liquory in the summer, and go for the browns in the colder months.

And I definitely drink more red wine in fall and winter.

You might already know this, Reg, but my grandmother has told me that when she got married (in the late 40s) it was not uncommon for there to be pitchers of Manhattans on the tables at someone's reception.

I don't know that I"m seasonal, but I definitely have "mood" drinks.

My sensible standard drink is a rum and diet coke. That's when I'm trying to watch calories and still want to relax and have a good time.

I love White Russians, when I say "to hell with calories!" and have a bit of a sweet tooth going.

I love a classic Margarita on the rocks (I make killer Margaritas, BTW).

I also love Cosmopolitans.

I don't drink much beer or wine because of the sulfites. I love the taste, but they make me feel like I'm coming down with a cold. So I rarely drink beer and almost never drink wine.

White Russian is my go-to brunch drink, actually.

Givesmevoice, I may have seen better days, but exactly what makes you think I know what your grandmother served at her wedding?

See, Reg? We all think you dress like that. And you're in black-and-white, too.

I know. I sometimes think I'm thought of as a well-perserved hundred-and-ten-year-old.

(But givesmevoice know I was just teasing her.)

I'm a vodka girl. I don't have a specific drink, but I generally get the cheapest/easiest juice (generally a vodka cranberry or screwdriver). And VCs for me always need lime.

I'm a fan of sweet drinks, so pretty much give me vodka with anything sweet, on the rocks, and I'll be happy.

I used to drink Amaretto Sours because they reminded me of the first time I got drunk. (I did not get drunk off of Amaretto Sours, but that night I also realized I hate tequila.) They are also the favorite drink of my ex. Note that I don't drink them anymore.

If I'm at an open bar, I generally get whatever the signature cocktail is, which is generally an Izzie-based cocktail at Broadway opening nights.

Vodka Stinger. I was watching (PBS), the studio session of the OBCR of COMPANY sometime about 10 yrs, ago, and when Elaine screamed out "Another Vodka Stingerrrrrrrrrr ! I realized I had never had that drink before. Subsequently, I had one a few weeks later. Will NEVER have one again. Godawful! Goo(d lyric, though, Steve!

givesmevoice-I too love Malibu Bay Breezes. They just taste good.

I guess one of my favorite drinks is Long Island Iced Tea. I know, it is potent, but still really good. I don't order them too often for that reason. But, my friends introduced me to some premixed in the dorms my freshman year of college. Then that summer I got dragged to the local bar with the 21 & over crowd from the Boy Scout camp I worked at and a few let me sneak a taste.

I am so tired of my posts disappearing...

Mostly Gin.

Mixed drink - if I want a little sweet - Tanqueray and Tonic.
Something Stronger - Bombay Sapphire or Boodles on the rocks with a martini olive. Once in a while Stoli or Ketel One on the Rocks with a martini olive.

If I really am craving something a bit sweet - Black Russian (why waste the calories on Milk/Cream?).

My tastes have evolved over the years.

Currently for a cocktail, I really enjoy a Mojito during the warm months. Otherwise, I really enjoy a good beer or glass of wine.

What is your favorite cocktail and why?

I have my seasonal moods - red wine or dark liquors in the colder months, white wine or clear liquors in the warmer months - but my generic standby is vodka and club soda. It's sort of an all-occasion cocktail.

Since moving to central Maine I'm craving a chance to go down the coast and have a margarita by the water on a hot afternoon, but the opportunity hasn't presented itself yet. I'm starting to get afraid that it won't, and I'll have to go through yet another winter in "Vacationland" without having that balance!

Champagne!

The night they invented champagne
It's plain as it can be
They thought of you and me
The night they invented champagne

that all we'd want to do
Is fly to the sky on champagne
And shout to everyone in sight
That since the world began
no woman or a man
has ever been as happy as we are tonight!
