I found out my range. It's a low F (below middle C) to a high C (above middle C)
What voice part would this be? I think I'm an alto/mezzo.

Posted: 10/10/06 at 12:42amGah my voice. I'm a classically trained mezzo with a strong alto as well, and some soprano range. I have a decent belt but nothing special in that department. My vocal quality has the richness of a mezzo, so that's what I call myself.

Ahem...the story of my man voice
Once upon a time there was a girl who wanted a part in the spring "musical," Pirates of Penzance. Knowing she needed to try out for a specific part to get considered for anything in the musical, she opted for Ruth, rather than Mabel, the beautiful soprano, because there was a certain person who already had a lock on that role. As a result, she was called back for Ruth, but being a Sophmore and not understanding the character as well as a Senior had, she did not get the part. However, she was still good enought to be in the play, and because she had tried out on the lower audition music, she was placed in the role of a Policeman because of a lack of male auditionees. Now, the policemen were written as Basses. This represented a challenge for the girl, who had sung 1st and 2nd soprano throughout her entire high school career. The female policemen sometimes took notes up the octave but the music usually rested on the G below middle C and did not rise above the A above middle C. Because the actual policeMEN did not sing very loud, the girls who were policemen and cared about the policemen being heard tried to sing very loudly. This was not good for the specific girl we were talking about. She had never been that confident about any notes above the staff and this belting below it did strange things to her range. The result of the play was that the girl's voice was very confused. It took it 5 months to figure out what voice part it wanted to sing again. Fortunately, her voice decided to widen it's range and the girl just got a spot as a Soprano 2 in a district choir. This Soprano 2 title, however, is not very accurate given that the 2's and 1's both had to sing the same excerpts of the same songs which went up to a high A flat. The girl wishes she was able to take voice lessons so she could learn how to belt properly and know what all you smart people are talking about with your opera terms. However at present, she will continue using lengthy warm-ups and ungodly amounts of water to keep her voice pretty.
I rambled I know. And I don't know why I decided to tell that in the 3rd person. I am however very excited about making that district choir. I just found out about it today, after a horrible audition experience yesterday in which I blundered terribly with my own chorus teacher as a judge. I'm currently wondering what she will say to me at my voice part placement meeting with her on Thursday. It should be interesting.

Lovely tale! I was going to audtiiton for my districts, but alas, I had about 40 conflictsa on the day of the real audtiion, and rehearsla wouldn't be easy, as I'm already booked up my whole excpet Sunday. (Except now I have SAT titoring, blah!)
Ask your choral director to see if they knows any voice teachers, I'[m sure they'd be happy to help!

well, I posted on the first page of this thread (over a year ago, wow... lol), but my range has slightly improved.
I'm still a Soprano 1, and I can still hit the high C (2 above middle), but now I can go down to a G below middle C. Not that well, mind you, but I've been working on my lower range to get it stronger. :)

Posted: 10/11/06 at 4:37pmNot sure what my actual range is, but when I first joined choir I was a Soprano 1. Then again I was tone deaf and that was the only way I could sing without standing out (so I could follow the melody) Now I'm a Soprano 2, but it's not really fair because on the day of our placement tests I was sick, so my range was totally off.

Awesome Altos!
But I can do mezzo & possibly soprano, I can get to a high F if I'm ready.
#61re: What's your voice part?
Posted: 11/27/06 at 11:14pmI think I'm becoming a baritone. All I know is I'm trying realllllly hard to open my range with my voice teacher, and it's coming along, bit by bit.

Posted: 11/28/06 at 9:59amI'm classifying myself as a soprano right now, but with a lot more work I will most likely end up a soprano acuto sfogato. (AKA a Colouratura). It'll take a lot of work, but It's there, right now it's just hiding.

I am most definitely a soprano with a belt... last I checked I was (depending on a day) E or F below middle to C to a high high C... huzzah for the sopranos!!

" huzzah for the sopranos!! "
I agree =)
I'm a first soprano...I can't remember my range, though. But I really can't sing much alto. Hmm...I don't think that made much sense. It sounded kinda stupid.

Contralto. Represent.
I usually sing 2nd alto or help out tenor or baritone parts.
My more or less normal range (by which I mean the most I can expect during a normal performance) is from F2 (one octave lower than the F below middle C) to about E5 (near the top of the staff). I always feel more comfortable with lower notes, and I try to find songs that don't go much higher than the middle of the staff. I can go higher (or lower) if I warm up really, really well.
The funny thing is, I used to sing 1st soprano, until my sophomore year in high school. I finally decided to embrace my alto-ness and change parts. So, I can sing higher, but I'm very rusty.....and, I just love singing low.
I should mention, I'm not a "polished" singer, I have some range, but I really need to work on my technique, mostly in my higher register. The range I'm most comfortable and sound the best in is C3-G4.

Posted: 11/28/06 at 8:24pmI'm definitely a 2nd alto, but I'm also comfortable with the tenor parts. I'm not a trained singer and I have no idea what my actual range is, though.

Well I'm young and have a young voice, so I don't know my lowest note, but I'm a soprano and my top note is (I'm checking my piano right now) the A above the C above the middle C.
