When teasing on the board goes too far

Posted: 7/6/05 at 1:06pmI'm SUCH a fan of subtext. Basically I'm seeing this thread as a Yenta martyr trip at this point. I own that feeling and nobody can take it away from me.

Posted: 7/6/05 at 1:07pmNot a martyr trip at all. I am certainly not into that. It is just basic human nature to have feelings and express things.

Mister Matt: I am so sorry that you haven't seen that side of him because it is a wonderful side. It is a very sad thing that people rarely get to see it.

Oh my God! Is this over a crack about your weight? So he tried to be funny and missed the mark. I hardly think he needs a prayer vigil or exorcism to expel his demons. If, as you say, you know him to be a decent and caring person, you know his remark was not meant to hurt you. I agree with Namo. You are making much to much out of this.
"I just pray that everyone who is in such emotional turmoil that they hurt others can get the help they need." Or maybe they just need to get better material...
Let it go already...

Posted: 7/6/05 at 1:15pmSueleen......it was a lot more than just a crack about my weight that has escalated. That was just the straw that broke the camel's back.

I suggest you read Susan Sontag's "Illness as Metaphor" for an enlightening look at why it's actually damaging to call non-diseases like ignorance diseases and the tremendous disservice it does to actual disease survivors. You might learn a thing or two.
Reread your last post Yenta, and tell me there isn't a bit of a martyr complex going on.

Yenta, we have to do something to toughen you up. When you make these statements that make you seem fragile, you're only opening yourself up to more attacks.
I got it. We'll find you a trainer, and then we'll have a BWW boxing match, and you can beat the crap out of Sueleen and Namo for charity. :)

Count me in Shameless! And please include DP in the ring. . And BTW...........I am very tough and don't feel I really need toughening. I think it takes a tough person to be sensitive.

Posted: 7/6/05 at 1:59pmI agree that it takes a strong person to be sensitive, but try not to leave yourself wide open for the low blows (in keeping with boxing theme).

But it's not even an attack. I made the observation that this thread reads like a martyr trip. Ostensibly it's about teasing going too far, a concept that most people can agree with. Yes, sometimes teasing goes too far.
But it's really about Dollypop. And people trying to make themselves feel better by pointing out that no matter what else they do that may or may not be "nice," they aren't as bad as Dollypop.
What I wrote was a joke. I followed through on Yenta's camel's back reference. I basically follow the Vilanch Rule of Comedy which, I remember reading in a Vilanch interview once, is, "Basically, did somebody die? If not, it's open for comedy."

I LOVE Vilanche! THE Funniest man ever!
I don't doubt that Yenta was hurt by DP's comment. My point is that she keeps defending this "kind and caring" person who doesn't exist. Her disapointment in him is surprising, given how mean he is. It would be the same if someone started a thread complaining how mean and nasty Sueleen is...er...I mean NAMO! Is anyone surprised?

I just don't see the fun in going after such an easy target. Yenta, is very sensitive especially when it comes to jokes about weight, and is already feeling hurt by DP.
So, why kick someone when they're down? Personally, I think it's much more fun to go after someone who can dish it out as well as they can take it.

But that's kind of the funny thing about this place. People get pegged as being nice OR mean, when actual human beings are capable of being both, sometimes within a span of seconds.
Perfectly reasonable level-headed people, some of whom I have met in person and enjoyed spending time with, survived their encounters with Namo Meano. Hard to believe, right?
Basically, if something strikes me as joke worthy, I make the joke. Other than that, I don't suffer fools gladly.
DP is capable of being both cutting and endearing. People get confused because they simply can't hold what would appear to be two contradictory impulses like that. It fries out their brain circuitry, apparently.
I do wonder how, if at all, such folks make their way in the world. Maybe they don't? Maybe their human interaction is all online? Of course, online "life" is just as messy and anarchic as life in the real world. The things we would like to control, like "niceness" and "teasing that doesn't go too far," are just as uncontrollable online.

Posted: 7/6/05 at 2:29pmI don't get how the existence of bullying justifies it. Yes, people do bad things. That doesn't change the fact that they're...bad things.

Here she comes to save the day: Plum the Yeshiva Boy.
The whole "bullying" cry just allows people to put themselves in the category of victim, a close sibling of martyr.
That's fine. It's a theatre board. People play roles.
PS. I've seen Yenta dishing it out to Albin. Clearly, she HAS the ability. To me, the subtext of that was Yenta currying favor with DP, "See DP? I can go after your target TOO!" It didn't get her permanent immunity from DP's comments, which is where I think this thread comes in.

Namo, just for the record, I don't consider you to be one of those obnoxious posters I mentioned, but I do think you, on occasion, go for the easy target.

But Shameless, you have only been here since March 11, hardly enough time to get to know everyone who has been posting for a couple of years very well. Unless, of course, that is not your first screen name here. There is a lot of history that you are not really aware of. So things may seem one way to you and quite different for someone who has been through it all.
