#0When teasing on the board goes too far
Posted: 7/5/05 at 11:36amI was just doing some thinking about how we do tease each other on this board at times. True, most have us have a wonderful sense of humor. But when this gentle teasing turns into down right cruelty, it makes me think. Do people realize when they are cruel that they are actually hurting people? I really don't think so because they continue to do it. Sometimes I try to think of why people do this. Is it a defense mechanism? Cruelty and hurt can put a great distance between people . Perhaps some people can't deal with getting close to people so they hurt them and keep them at a distance. I believe that this is very childish. Or maybe people were terribly wounded at some point in their lives or in particular their childhood. They never learned how to deal with things on a mature level and this is how they cope. I admit that there have been times on this board that I may have over stepped some boundaries..........but I learned and grew from those experiences. Please discuss.

Are people throwing negativity snowballs again?
I don't know if it stems from personal experiences, but I think, in some cases, people feel the anonymity of the board gives them license to be a$$holes.

Posted: 7/5/05 at 11:49amI think you have a point there Shameless. Being online gives a person a sense of freedom to let their dark side show. It is a shame that has to happen as I think it is a very unhealthy.

Posted: 7/5/05 at 11:54amShameless has a good point. Also, since we can not hear the tone in someone's voice when reading a post, it can be easily misunderstood. I know some people around here thought I was being a total bitch when I was just being silly.

Posted: 7/5/05 at 11:58amMN..I think that is true. Online we have to chose our words very carefully because no one can hear our voices. I have been a chat host on AOL for several years and I always stress that it the chats I lead. However, there are times in here when it becomes just too much.

Posted: 7/5/05 at 12:03pmnmartin, you're right, you can't always tell how things are meant. I have a sarcastic, dry sense of humor, but I'm very careful about what I type here because it doesn't translate very well, and I got tired of having to tell people when I was joking.

Posted: 7/5/05 at 12:08pmShameless, I have the same sense of humor myself. I know what you mean.

#10re: when teasing on the board goes too far
Posted: 7/5/05 at 12:15pmor maybe there's an awful lotta whiny little cry-babies on this board who didn't get enough love from mama and now they're searching to fill that void with anonymous conversations. suck it up folks, it's a message board.

Posted: 7/5/05 at 12:19pmRight Papa.......people might not have gotten what they needed when they were kids and it hurt their developement. They should go to therapy.
#12re: when teasing on the board goes too far
Posted: 7/5/05 at 12:25pmPapa, there are, without a doubt, a lot of whiney crybabies here, but it doesn't change the fact that some people go too far, and seem to take pleasure in it.

I think some people may use this board as a venting place. If their lives are going badly for some reason, they come here to bitch at people / be bitchy to people because there are no big consequences. If they vented at somebody in their everyday 'real'life they would have to deal with that person gettin angry at them or whatnot, here they can just sign off.

Posted: 7/5/05 at 12:51pmGrouping every person who's against the overly nasty atmosphere that sometimes occurs here as a whining crybaby is an oversimplification that's beneath you, papa. You act as if considering the feelings of others is akin to dressing up in a pink bunny suit and singing the Barney song.

I love you.
You love me.
We're a happy family.
With a great big hug and a kiss from me to you.
Won't you sat you love me too?
How do I remember that, Plum??
I haven't seen Barney since I was, like, four.

Posted: 7/5/05 at 12:57pmIt burrows into your brain and eats it from the inside out, Priest. *nods solemnly* Trust me. And I was already getting too old for Barney the first time I saw it.

I just don't find it pleasant to post on a board where people constantly have a negative attitude towards others. I know its not always true with this board, but it definitely has its moments. Its aggravating to post something amidst a board arguement.
I do agree that people use the anonymity of the board to their advantage to argue with people. If it were in person I doubt that some of the arguements would ever go as far as they do here because of confrontational issues.

Posted: 7/5/05 at 1:26pmBullies on a message board are no different than bullies in "real life". They are insecure about themselves, and belittle others to puff-up their own sense of self-worth. I've been on the receiving end of it on this Board, and have chosen to ignore it. Mainly, because I have nothing to prove here, and I know that in "real life", I could easily kick their ass.
