As dangerous or more dangerous yes. But trust me...a dogs' mouth is no dirtier than that of a human. That's a big myth. Maybe you're just dirty!

so how close do you people keep your toothbrush to your toilet?

My point is, all people are pretty full of germs as a matter of course. Using Purell when you touch a friggin' subway pole isn't going to help anything, and will in fact act as a force of natural selection for the germs, making them evolve to be more hardy more quickly than they otherwise would.

When I was a kid, my mother always made me put toilet paper on a public toilet seat. That was going to be a germ barrier?

re: When you flush your toilet....

I've hard of this too. although, when it was told to me I believe it was said that even closing the lid doesn't prevent all the germs from spreading because the force of the initial flush and drain is so strong that it can sometimes project any germ on, in or around the toilet up to twenty feet, even if it has to do so through the lining of the lid...

some good news is that urine is sterile. your body takes care of that. it's the feces that can carry germs. the harmful germs, however, can only survive in a moist, warm environment. but, this issue brings up the old toilet seat rumor that toilet seat covers in public restrooms are unnecessary and that is essentially true. a person's hands have more germs than their ass does and the kind of germs that can be harmful when coming in contact with your skin, again, can only survive in a warm damp environment and a toilet seat does not stay warm or damp for very long.

re: When you flush your toilet....

Actually, I've had long discussions about this topic. As a society, our obsession with cleanliness is leading to problems. The amazing increase in the number of people with allergies is thought to be connected to the disinfectant everyone uses all the time. When your immune system doesn't have a chance to ward off anything, there will be huge problems when the really nasty germs come along. I'm not saying that we shouldn't wash our hands (or close toilet lids while flushing) but sometimes when we get too hyped up about germs, they end up hurting us even more.

Interesting fact I don't really believe in. Some scientists claim the higher divorce rate we have and the number of relationship problems is connected to showers. When we shower every day, we wash away our pheromones, decreasing attractively to other people. Of course, someone who hasn't showered in a month isn't going to be prime dating material.

Just my two cents.

Munk is 100% correct. My sister saw this show about bathroom germs getting on your toothbrush about a year ago. She was pregnant at the time, so it freaked her out even more than it normally would have, and she went out and bought the whole family these toothbrush sanitizer machines, but I ended up throwing mine in the cabinet anyway. I like to live dangerously!

I'm pretty sure i've read that toothpaste kills anything bad that's on the actual toothbrush. In any case, I'm not gonna get paranoid about it!

There are germs and bacteria everywhere, don't even think about it. You don't even want to know what's on your keyboard.

Yeah, I find it easier to just flip the channel when a "What's really on your toothbrush?" "What's really going on in your favorite restaurant's kitchen?" type segments come on. I know in the end, I can't keep my toothbrush in a vacu-sealed, germ-free environment, and I'm not going to stop eating out, so why have that unnecessary anxiety of fretting over it for the next few minutes, hours, days, etc?

That's very interesting. I love these little facts.

I'm just curious as to WHO actually does these studies.

re: When you flush your toilet....

This is a good topic but as someone said, how much are you going to obsess. Do you know how many germs are on your phone? Especially if you share it. There are germs everywhere- they are unavoidable. The toilet and toothbrush thing is just 1 of millions. How paraniod are you going to get?

I recieved this in a an e-mail. I have it in the back of my mind but I'm not going to go crazy over it.

Have you ever noticed gals who sit their purses on public restroom floors -that go directly to their dining tables? Happens a lot! It's not always the restaurant food that causes stomach distress. Sometimes "what you don't know 'will' hurt you"! Mom got so upset when a guest came in the door and plopped their purses down on the counter where she was cooking or setting up the buffet. She always said that purses are really dirty, because of here they have been.
It's something just about every woman carries with them. While we may know what's inside our purses, do you have any idea what's on the outside?

Shauna Lake put purses to the test - for bacteria - with surprising results. You may think twice about where you put your purse. Women carry purses everywhere; from the office to public
restrooms to the floor of the car. Most women won't be caught without their purses, but did you ever stop to think about where your purse goes during the day?
"I drive a school bus, so my purse has been on the floor of the bus a lot," says one woman.

"On the floor of my car, probably in restrooms." "I put my purse in grocery shopping carts, on the floor of bathroom stalls while changing a diaper," says another woman and of course in my home which should be clean."

We decided to find out if purses harbor a lot of bacteria. We learned how to test them at Nelson Laboratories in Salt Lake, then we set out to test the average woman's purse. Most women told us they didn't stop to think about what was on the bottom of their purse. Most said they usually set their purses on top of kitchen tables and counters where food is prepared.

Most of the ladies we talked to told us they wouldn't be surprised iftheir purses were at least a little bit dirty. It turns out purses are so surprisingly dirty, even the microbiologist who tested them was shocked.

Microbiologist Amy Karren of Nelson Labs says nearly all of the purses tested were not only high in bacteria, but high in harmful kinds of bacteria. Pseudonyms can cause eye infections, staphylococcus aurous can cause serious skin infections, and salmonella and e-coli found on the purses could make people very sick.In one sampling, four of five
purses tested positive for salmonella, and that'snot the worst of it. "There is fecal contamination on the purses," says Amy.

Leather or vinyl purses tended to be cleaner than cloth purses, and lifestyle seemed to play a role. People with kids tended to have dirtier purses than those without, with one exception. The purse of one single woman who frequented nightclubs had one of the worstcontamination's of all. "Some type of feces,or even possibly vomit or something like that," says Amy.

So the moral of this story - your purse won't kill you, but it does have the potential to make you very sick if you keep it on places where you eat. Use hooks to hang your purse at home and in restrooms, and don't put it on your desk,a restaurant table, or on your kitchen countertop.

Experts say you should think of your purse the same way you would a pair of shoes. "If you think about putting a pair of shoes onto your countertops, that's the same thing you're doing when you put your purse on the countertops" Your purse has gone where every individual before you has spat, coughed, urinated, emptied bowels, etc! Do you really want to bring that home with you?

The microbiologists at Nelson also said cleaning a purse will help. Wash cloth purses and use leather cleaner to clean
the bottom of leather purses.

re: When you flush your toilet....

If this were something to be concerned about, we'd all be sick all the time.

We live in a dirty world - what's dirty about it is mostly what comes from our own bodies. We make the dirt and germs. Those discussing the dangers of antibacterial overuse are absolutely correct.
